Dear readers,
It has been about 1 month since I have played this game, and I have tried everything I could. If you could recommend some solutions to me then that would be most helpful to me. If you can figure it out then that would be good, but other people have had the same problem & the only difference is that they have windows. I have Mac OS X, which goes to show that most of these topics under Technical Issues won't help. I am at the point of jealousy in which my friend is able to play but I can't, this goes to me feeling week since he started later then I. I just want to get back on and become the 5* hooded magician (as I call it) I want to be. Please help, I would say that this is one of the games I spent my time on when I had free time & its just ending up in a ditch.
Sincerely,
Some random person with the SAME problem other people have been having but on a different computer/laptop.
Mac OS X Steam launching Problems
I don't know what you mean by a JavaVirtualMachine but when I did your steps I found no trace of it and I got the java that you linked, but I still have the problem of it not launching. The problem still proceeds and I just want to play it on my free time (which I have a lot of).
You might have a different issue then. There's an off-chance you might be running into that recent java permissions attribute issue.
Check your java version by:
1) Opening terminal.
2) Type java -version
3) Paste the output here.
Example:
java version "1.6.0_65"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_65-b14-462-11M4609)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.65-b04-462, mixed mode)
Check your video card by:
1) Clicking "About this mac" in the apple icon drop-down.
2) Clicking the "system report" button.
3) Clicking the graphics/displays tab.
4) Copy and paste that page here.

You must downgrade to Java 1.6. Your version of Java does not work with Spiral Knights. Downgrade that immediately!
Yeah, I was right. You need to uninstall Java 8 (1.8) and replace it with the version Apple gives you (Java 6 / 1.6).
If you remove java 8 and replace it with java 6, your "java -version" command should report 1.6, not 1.8.

I tried to follow the instructions but there is still a problem. They say to get rid of files that I never even had like JavaVirtualMachines etc. and I can't even do what they are saying. :/ problem not solved
the first instructions worked perfect for me, try them again lilsolo. when you delete the files you automatically get apple default java which supports SK.
I discovered that even though the web client for Spiral Knights runs by installing the standard Java Runtime Environment, the steam client will not run unless you install the Java Developer Kit. Java 6 or Java 1.6 is not required. It successfully ran on OS X 10.10 for me just now using Java Developer Kit 8.

1) Go to the top level of your hard drive in finder.
2) Go to Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines
3) Remove the folders in there
4) Download Apple's version of Java at http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572 (Java 6 SE) or https://developer.apple.com/downloads/index.action (Full Java 6 JDK)
I can confirm Spiral Knights will work on a clean copy of OS X Mavericks with Apple's own copy of Java. If you touch beta oracle stuff, you risk incompatibility. I can also confirm if you accidentally install a new alpha or beta of oracle's java distribution, this is one way to fix it.
Spiral Knights has a buggy window initialization procedure that fails on certain versions of newer Java on Mac OS X Mavericks. Using the steps above may fix this.
/me waits for all the mac users unable to launch to rush to this thread.
