I have a major problem with people who find loopholes in the profanity filter (which does not do a good job anyway). I have my chat set to comicify or drop all the time too. I have a question to all of those who use those loopholes: What is the point? There's a reason to have the profanity filter and chat settings, why would you go through all that trouble to let EVERYONE know you're swearing?
Cursing and Swearing, Profanity Filter
^^^ I believe Dahall is actually correct in some terms. Let me check the ToS and rules.
http://wiki.spiralknights.com/List_of_known_filtered_words
'The information here is provided for reference only. Use of these words in public or via unwanted tells in the game can be basis for other players to ignore you, or submit a complaint. Misspelling the curse words to get around the filters are even more likely to get you in trouble. See the Terms of Service and Community Standards for further information.'
Best report those who do 'misspell the curse words'.
A little more research:
http://wiki.spiralknights.com/Community_Standards
'Keep it clean! - Using or linking to vulgar, obscene or offensive language or material is considered swearing. This includes any racial, sexual, unlawful, religious slurs, insults or other deliberately offensive remarks directed at another knight. While there is a chat filter present in the game, this does not excuse offensive language or behavior. Misspelling or mis-spacing words to get around the filter will be treated as swearing and dealt with accordingly.'
People who do try to surpass the profanity system can be reported by someone if that person wishes to do so. However in most cases, swearing does actually insult someone so don't wait and watch the world turn around. If someone does insult someone else with swearing / vulgar language, do report them.
Yeah just report them. That's the whole point. People who bypass the wordfilter are deliberately being offensive. If they really didnt want to see filters, they could set it to "none".
well maybe they are trying to say one thing when others think they are trying to say something else because there are many curse words that have the same number of letters, so when its filtered people may take it the wrong way
You guys are awesome, I was expecting hate posts but great!
No prob.
You may wish to leave this here in General Discussions in order to let people know of your claim and what people can do when in your situation - or graveyard it if you find this thread has no meaning now.
I think its because they don't realize that there is an option to change it.
people are lazy/stupid/impatient and don't know how to read the options/instructions/patch notes.
I will admit that I curse quite frequently, but I make sure to not misspell things just so others have to see my pottymouth too. X(
I've reported several people who intentionally were bypassing the filter. There are some words that completely drop what you were going to say (even with all filters turned off), and generally if those words are bypassed I'll send in a report for it. Especially when people are threatening to do certain explicit things to me. :s
Oh then this raises the question. Since there is a badmouth filter, is it considered ban-worthy to curse then?
From my understanding the filter is there so that the people who don't want to see it don't have to. If they really didn't want us to curse at all, I don't think they'd let us disable it. I guess I could be wrong, though.
I really should pull it back anyway ahaha.. at least I manage to keep it clean on the forums.
As a frequent user of colorful language I remember a gm stating once that no profanity is allowed, not even that which is allowed to be shown by removing the profanity filter. I try not to curse at people or on the forums and I've yet to get a warning. : )
Remember: SK is geared more towards kids ages 13+. So that means KEEP YO (barnacle) TOGEDER
...my bad XD
GM note: Next poster downthread has it right. Don't swear on the forums, please.
You could report profanity if you feel like being a snitch.
Although, posting it in the forums doesn't seem like a good idea.
I'm also saying that the game masters should strengthen the profanity filter because I do see words that are profanity, but not seen as a word to the filter. I specifically have my chat setting set to comicify. Plus, it's not being a snitch if the person is breaking the ToS. Why do people work so hard to work their way around the filter? To show anger towards the game?
I do agree that there are people who feel like gaming is like a sport. I respect them, but I don't respect sore losers who would like to show anger. A game is a game, not something to take your anger out. I also do watch Rage Quit from Rooster Teeth, but it's to laugh at his lack of gaming knowledge in some games.
My point is that since there is the existence of such a filter, then why can people still get banned for using a word listed in the filter system. My friend got banned because he said one, then someone else "noticed" it, and reported it. It was listed in the filter system...
I still think there should be an option to show your messages unfiltered to yourself (and only to yourself). That way you still could let off some steam without bothering others too much.
Right now, they might as well make every swearword bring your HP down one pip. It'd be just as pointless and frustrating.
The GM's are weird when it comes to supporting the community guidelines. I've seen other players be sexually harassing (is that how you say it?) , tell other players to kill themselves, call them blatantly racist and/or homophobic slurs, and with no action from the GM's part...
But as soon as my friends let out a simple 'f bomb' among ourselves, BANNED.
I intentionally set my chat filter to none, just in case of raging party members so a fun screencap could be taken and sneakily reported.
*And to make sure no non-vulgar or offensive words get accidentally filtered in the process*.
*don't trust this line it's full of carp
@Whimsicality
"tell other players to kill themselves...with no action from the GM's part"
Really? I got a temp ban just for having a stance on suicide that didn't fit the commonplace "never do it". As for the other things, I've had people say some incredibly sexist things to me, and they haven't had any penalties because of it. To my knowledge, of course.
Wait seriously? They can ban you JUST for swearing, even though there's wordfilters? That doesn't sound right. It probably wasn't the literal words but just harassment in general. If you tell someone "get out of my face you stupid loser, everyone hates you and I wish you'd die" (or something to that effect) in a serious manner directed at a specific person you can probably be reported even if there's no actual swear words.
To clarify on swearing:
Evading the filter will result in a warning or a suspension, depending on your past history. If it's really, really bad, it can result in a permanent ban. "Really, really bad" in this case generally means that the swearing itself isn't the main issue; it tends to be part of a torrent of racist statements, for instance. However, we do go on a case-by-case basis, looking at patterns of behavior and whatnot.
Regular swearing, without evading the chat filter, has two general categories. The first is totally fine - I won't actually swear here, but you'll get the gist of it: "Holy mackerel, Batman, I really screwed up there."
The second is not. "You're a dirty stinkin' scaly mackerel."
See the difference?
With regards to complaints that don't appear to have been acted on, keep in mind that the only person who is informed of any warnings, suspensions, or bans is the person being warned, suspended, or banned. Sometimes this happens some time after the complaint was submitted, sometimes it happens immediately. Generally, we tend to lean away from permanently banning people, since we don't like to do it, jokes about bansticks aside. I can tell you however that a non-zero number of folks over the history of Spiral Knight have been warned, suspended, and permanently banned for sexist, racist, homophobic and/or other harassing and abusive behavior. I have no idea if they're the person you're referring to, Whimsicality, as I've not checked, but sexism, homophobia, and other bigoted behavior is definitely not cool with us, and please do continue to report it as soon as it happens so that the relevant chatlogs are appended to your complaint. Thanks!

@ Whimsicality
Same thing happened to me except more rage-inducing. Some little idiot in-game (not gonna name because "naming and shaming policy" even though I should because it's a SHAME that these types of people lurk around in this game) does exactly what you mentioned, being blatantly racist/homophobic, calling me and my friends every swear word and name in the book for no reason, telling us to kill ourselves, going way over the top with insults, even attempting to stalk me and my friends via Steam/Facebook/Whatsapp to harass us even further than just pm's in-game. Finally one day I tell him simply to "f off" and guess what happens? I get banned less than a minute later for use of "Offensive, abusive, and sexual language" and as well as "evading the chat filter in order to curse/insult other players." Don't believe me? Here. and the dumbest part of this is the "evading the chat filter" part because I did not evade it in any way. The only swear word I said was the f-bomb and the last time I checked the f-bomb in its whole is filtered. It will appear on your screen if you have your filter off (which I personally do) but anyone who has it on will either have it dropped or comicified depending on their setting. Meanwhile I get a 2 day ban, and other moron doesn't even get a warning (and yes he's been reported multiple times by several of my friends.) It's crap like this that made me come up with a conspiracy:
It's almost like these people either know a GM personally or bribe them with cash to let them slip away from ToS violations, or basically a form of a "Get out of jail free" card. If this is true, and if it's the lack of content updates/communication/money-milking promos left right and center that don't make me quit the game it's this kind of stuff that most definitely will.
(Note from Hyp, edited in because it doesn't really need its own post: Khomie, I had a look at your suspension. It doesn't seem to be as you're describing - that is, you were not suspended for saying "f off". If you'd like to shoot us a support request so we can do it privately, we'd be happy to copy-paste in the chat which resulted in your suspension. (That goes for everyone, actually - if anything happens with your account that you're confused about, please do ask us! The point of warnings and suspensions is as an educational thing, after all, to let players know that a behavior is not acceptable. We'd much rather clarify once than suspend a dozen times.)
While I'm okay with swearing (grew up with it from mom since I was a kid ._.), I also agree with OP because of people using in just outrageous ways. Now, in regular speech, or in humorous rage, though, that's a different story. I myself am not into swearing all that much, but I only say minor things. I even re-word the two major ones into silly things.
@OP
I suggest you simply stop using the internet. If the mere sight of a swear word is even slightly bothering you, well, you'll always be bothered. I find it incredible that this kind of mentality actually makes it tedious to have a casual conversation around haven with other people; can't even say something as unharmful as "gaaay" (please be offended) without risking a warning. You'll find that NO ONE is actually trying to evade the filter. The filter is just not good enough to spot common ways of saying "swear" words and so unfortunately you will see some of them, and likely your paranoid brain will think those players are trying to let everyone know they're swearing.
The application by the way by GM's of the filter rules is terrible. It's blind, contextless, brainless. I wonder if maybe there isn't a script running those warnings, just looking at the logs, finding a curse word and automatically sending out a warning.
You don't wanna have to send out "chat filter evasion" warnings anymore? Improve the damn chat filter, it's not good enough. Players shouldn't have to think "dang maybe this word won't be filtered" whenever they feel like dropping a swear word.
^I think a better solution would, again, be to have people know of the chat option.
I really don't think that many people are intentionally putting underscores and dashes into their scaly mackerels to offend the OP, but I do think that a good many people don't know that there is an option to turn off the swear filter to some degree. At the start of the game, or at some point, just have a prompt pop up with "Your preferences on swear words?" And we'll be fine for life.
Might I request that the word "r@pe" be added to the filter? I see it used way too often. (Also as a side note, the word "f@g" is already on the list, as it should be).
because it's against the ToS.
Then someone else said that 'Nobody reads that @!($' (purposely comicified)
I mean, people DON'T read the ToS, so they don't abide by it.
More people need to learn the rules :/
I obviously can't speak on behalf of the GMs, especially with regards to specific people's cases, but I've been playing OOO games since 2006 and their policy on language has always been the same. It's basic common sense and it honestly surprises me so many people don't get it.
Firstly, the chat filter is there for two reasons: #1, anyone who doesn't want to see profanities can keep their filter on. #2, certain words are a complete no-no; those are the words that, when typed, will cause your entire line to be dropped from chat completely. They're the words OOO deems too offensive to be used in any context, ever (and I think they do a good job of deciding which words are worthy of this status).
Secondly, filter evasion is against the rules because we, as players, have the right to decide whether or not we see profanities and evading the filter takes that right away from people. So the words that are filtered are not too obscene to be used in any context, but they are rude enough that OOO provides us with the tools to block them out if we wish to.
Context matters, as Hyperion pointed out; I curse a LOT and I've never had so much as a warning in my eight years of playing OOO games because I don't swear at people. I also never use words that could potentially offend a subset of people - if in doubt, stick to f*** and sh***.
Also, just a heads up to the people talking about their own specific bans/suspensions: OOO have been known to post the exact circumstances of a ban on the forums if the offender insists they did nothing wrong, lies about what happened, and uses those lies to make OOO look unfair. It's very entertaining for the rest of us, but you may want to reconsider before doing that.
^I think i'll add peking Evilduck to my alfredo....Mmmmm.....
Also, if someone swears by avoiding the filter, report them. That should be fairly obvious, as there is a complain option on the list when you click them. Don't reply to them, just report them and be happy you might be improving the community by removing the bad parts.
Also the chat filter only works in english, you have to disactivate it in order to properly speak in french without the chat filtering bad english word... (retard actually mean late in french and even have it in adverb and adjectives...)
Retardataire.... ****ataire... good thing settings are in french huh
I believe that anyone circumventing the filter should be banned >:(
