I have an asi vh cutter and was wondering which out of the dread venom striker and wild hunting blade is better, and why.
cutter series
An interesting thing about the WHB is that it has a much higher flinch rate, on the charge at least. I can certainly recall juggling gremlins and wolvers with the WHB, but the DVS doesn't have the same capability. So in a way, both sword lines have their own benefits.
Strong poison is still something I would personally choose over a safer charge, but it's important to mention that some people also choose WHB just for the flinch rate. So it's a matter of preference. :P
so can anyone confirm whether normal attacks (NOT charge) of wild hunting blade can flinch enemies, and if so can dread venom striker also do it?
My sword guide has a subsection devoted to this frequently-asked question.
I have specifically tried to test whether WHB's regular attacks flinch more than DVS' regular attacks. I could not observe a difference. If my memory is accurate, neither flinches until the big hit at the end of the combo (first hit of fifth stroke).
I believe that the WHB has a longer range due to the phantasmal wolf that appears as the second hit. I quote from the swordsmaster guide page from the wiki,
"The Wild Hunting Blade is usually overlooked, but is actually in some ways superior to the Dread Venom Striker. The charge attack of the Wild Hunting Blade interrupts a monsters attack, which is a feature that the Dread Venom Striker does not have, making the Dread Venom Striker's charge attack very hard to use without taking damage in return. Also, the Wild Hunting Blade has more range, since the phantasmal Wolvers bite in front of the blade, not behind as in the Dread Venom Striker."
That text has been there a long time, and we have discussed it on these forums. It might be true. But I once specifically tried to test it, and could not observe any difference in range. It's a hard thing to test.
the ghost swings of cutter seem to miss since they appear behind the knight, which means dread venom striker ghost swings also probably miss, is this true, if true then wild hunting blade might be better?

At short range, both swords produce 10 damage numbers (based on 2 hits for each of 5 strokes made by the player). At long range, both swords produce 0 damage numbers (because the knight is too far away from the monster).
What Leckon is talking about is a subtle difference at certain intermediate ranges. It is speculated that WHB will still produce 10 damage numbers, while DVS will produce fewer than that (5 or maybe 6).
This effect, if it exists at all, is small enough that I have not been able to observe it, even while going out of my way to test it.
So I doubt that the effect really exists. I suspect that any perceived difference in range is cosmetic, caused by how the animations look. Even if it did exist, it would make very little difference to one's playing. But I could be wrong.
They both deal the same damage vs most monsters.
DVS has the chance to poison any monster (that isn't immune to poison), and deal additional damage (after poisoned).
WHB has natural damage boost to beast type monsters.
Most players typically wear global damage boosting armors (such as black kat or chaos). Since there is a maximum boost, this can nullify WHB's beast boost.
I'd recommend the DVS.
