I started playing Spiral Knights a week ago and I really like it. I played for a couple of hours on wednesday but then thursday came around. The new Bugfix was released and I started the game. The patcher came up, downloaded the files, patched to 100% about 3 times and then on the fourth it came up with the error:
"The application has failed to launch due to the following error:
Unexpected end of file from server"
So as many people would do when encountering this; I looked on the forums. I found no trace of this. I searched it on google and found three posts on this forum about it with the exact same thing I was thinking, "Is this going to be fixed?" In an attempt to get rid of the error, I uninstalled java and spiral knights and restarted my computer. I re-downloaded both of them(java first) and it did the same thing mentioned earlier. Thinking it was because I was using steam, I tried the downloadable client. It didn't work. I tried the browser form of the game. It didn't work. I then, in an attempt to get some support from the actual team, sent an email to them using the support portal explaining the situation. I'm still waiting on a reply and I have no bother with that, as long as the problem is fixed.
All I want to know is if you (Three Rings) are doing anything to solve this for the many people I have seen with the same problem, including myself.

You can work around this by manually downloading both files and copy them to the spiral knights directory. If that doesn't work, you need to delete the rsrc, code, and native folders in the SK directory, which forces the patcher to download a complete copy from the server.
I've been looking into this since the Ironclaw update and it seems like the issue is an http/data encoding problem when it tries to transfer data between the patch server and client software (including some browsers). The thing that strikes odd though, is that it only seems to be a problem with the delta patches and text files. If it needs to redownload the jars as a whole, they are received intact.

Im having the same issue, I tried all of the methods Starlinvf gave to fixing the issue but no worked. It now skips the patcher and says the error straight away.
I managed to download and play it fine before the patch, my partner had the issue then but just copied the files over from my pc on to his, but now we both are having the issue.
Every post ive come across via google doesnt seem to fix it.
Is there a link that i can download the files that Starlinvf posted above? as those do not seem to work for me (only thing i have yet to try though i asked a friend to send his over and that didnt work)

Delete the /code/ and /rsrc/
Delete the /code/ and /rsrc/ folders and launch the game again. I'll take a little bit since it has to pull new copies of the Jar files off the patch server.

i have attempted to aquire this file using a number of web browsers and a download manager. each time i get an unknown server error,
i have also tried to get it using proxyfiy.com and although i can view the file when it is saved to the hard drive the game dosent recognize it and attempts to re download creating the same error.
a solid fix for this problem would be really apreaciated im getting sic of spending 6 hours finding new ways to get the software to work each time you bring out a bloody patch

I'm having the same problem, and I've e-mailed 3Os about it. But I thought IU'd try to get help here. I'm having the same issue and I've tried everythign suggested in this thread. Tempted to do a full uninstall-reinstall, so I'll let you all know how that works out.

i would also like to point out that the gms should have offered this solution as a tempory measure until a fix was found. however it seems they dont give a crap.

here is a partial copy of the game and should be enough to get it working for most people as long as you havent deleted the game directory

copy the files in the rar into the game directory (keep the strucutre intact) overwrite any existing files
run the game. it will appear to do nothing for a time or if your running steam the client may appear to crash
just leave it alone!!!!! within about 10 min the game should start up fine.
let me know if you have any problems. i will also work on uploading just the digest.txt and getdown.txt and a full copy of the game for those who cant use the above

If you need to shrink it, technically all you need is everything in the native folder, getdown.txt, digest.txt, and all the jar files. Everything else is either contained in, or extracted from the jar.

The "unexpected end of file"
The "unexpected end of file" issue can be a result from aggressive "security software" such as virus scanners. Specifically, Kaspersky software has caused that in some cases.
I'd recommend to anyone having this error to temporarily disable those and then try patching again.

another patch another error
ok so they patched again and again i was unable to download the digest file.
after another 3 hours spent i have worked out that some ISPs seem to have a problem with the file compression ... or maby its the server having problems with the compression used by some ISPs ... either way the easy solution is to update using a different Internet Service Provider.
To this end i hooked up my flatmates cellphone to my computer and set it up to act as a modem.
This allowed me to download the update with no problems and now here it is for you all to enjoy.
as i still have 10 days left on my trial account at egnyte.com i will upload the files there again and am starting the process as i make this post.
i will be uploading the following files
full game (just copy it in and run)
digest and getdown files only
if i can be bothered later i might upload a partial version as i did with the previous patch.

The Game Masters don't have anything to do with the issue.
The developers probably know about the issue, but it sounds like something is wrong with your ISP or internet setup preventing you from getting the correct files.
Since I can grab the files with no hassle, I'll try to find an easy way to upload them. You only need the digest and getdown text files, correct?

I've emailed Support about this issue, and they think it's related to antivirus software or active Steam downloads.
Have you tried disabling all your antivirus software, patching and launching the game, then re-enabling the antivirus?
Also make sure that you don't have any active Steam downloads--let the downloads finish, or stop them.
Starlinvf's suggestion was also backed up by support:
Uninstall the game (delete local content)
Make sure the digest, getdown and version .txt files have been deleted
Update Java
Reinstall Spiral Knights
If it's not your antivirus or Steam downloads, and deleting the digest, getdown and version.txt files don't help, email Support.
Aug 24 versions:
Getdown.txt
Digest.txt
Open and "Save as" those pages, then drop those text files into your "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\spiral knights" folder
Make sure they overwrite the old files.
Open the version.txt and replace what is there with:
20110824144649
Save, try to launch the game.
If that doesn't work, delete the whole Spiral Knights folder and reinstall.

You'd think something wouldve been worked out by now, or atleast when they patch, they could link the 2 new files themselves, rather than trying to get another player to do it, Thanks to those btw :)

Have you already tried disabling any antivirus software, as stated earlier?
FYI, the dev team is totally working on this, but since only a few users are having problems with it, it's hard to collect data.
Out of curiosity, are you playing on a wireless router? If not, who is your ISP?

@yoats: Not all forums have file uploads enabled (SK doesn't). Also, torrent is inefficient for small datasets due to the seeding requirement. There are a number of text upload sites around the net (like pastebin) that will work for large amounts of text.
Proxify.com is one of the better solutions to get at the files, short of changing ISPs.

on a side note i downloaded the game client from spiralknights.com instead of through steam and it updated fine it just wouldnt let me play with my steam acount so i guess it's maybe a problem with steam?
