After nearly four years of development, Spiral Knights has officially launched today. This is a huge moment for me, the Spiral Knights team and all of Three Rings and I am so happy to be able to share it with them.
I consider myself privileged to be among the ranks of the very talented Spiral Knights team. Creating this game was a really fun and rewarding experience. I think everybody involved learned a great deal as we are a very small team, so wearing lots of hats was a requirement.
The best thing I can say about Spiral Knights is that it is a game I’ve always wanted to play. Years ago, as many games made the transformation into becoming living, online worlds I became very excited at the possibilities. In my head, I pictured all the games I loved from my childhood that were, bigger, dynamic and could be shared with more than just a couch’s worth of friends. That experience never really materialized.
Online games went in a different direction than I had expected. While I dabbled in competitive online shooters and EverQuest-style mmos, I always found myself dreaming of a world built from the same, warm, inviting pixels that crafted the lush forests of Secret of Mana, the haunting dungeons of Zelda or the vast, starry expanses of Phantasy Star. I decided that if ever given the chance, I would a build an online world that I would have appreciated the most before I ever knew anything about the Internet; a game that’s not the sum of its parts but just simply fun to pick up and play.
Many, many thanks are in order. I owe a great deal to everyone that made Spiral Knights possible, though there are too many to list here (but thank you Daniel. It means the world to me that you let me build a world of my own).
Finally, to all of our players I hope you enjoy the world that we have created for you. To me, it’s the best kind of world there is- a fun and mysterious place with equal parts fearsome monsters and good friends to have your back. But this world is special, it’s built to change. New adventures are coming, ones that require only the bravest of knights to band together and take the plunge.
See you in the Clockworks.
