Mentoring for new/advancing knights

Rockysforumclone

Hi all.

I absolutely love this game and want to do my bit for the SK community. So I have decided to start up a mentoring scheme.

I keep running into players who are either just starting out or just transitioning to a new tier and who are completely bewildered/overwhelmed by the experience. I hope that this will help some of those players out.

If you are a new player and would like some help learning to play, or if you are transitioning between tiers and want some pointers, or even if you are struggling with a particular boss and just cannot seem to kill it no matter how many times you try, then send me a message in-game and add me as a friend. I intend to put some runs together taking a bunch of new/developing players into the clockworks and helping out with strategy and tips.

If you are an experienced player and would like to help, please post here and we can set up a group of mentors - I think some players could really benefit from running with experienced players.

Things I intend to cover:

- General do's and don'ts of party play.
- Party or solo?
- Arenas and danger rooms and how to deal with them.
- How to make crowns.
- Advice on general Gear selection.

Feel free to post here or message me ingame. My IGN is Rock-Zombie.

Like the idea... one "but"

Excellent idea, and one which I would very much like to help with

Only one criticism... gear selection is highly personal, different people have different preferences and everyone thinks the weapons they use are the best... though this is all opinion (unless you think heavy swords are the best... which is a fact :P )

I'm half joking... but you get my point.... :P

My IGN is Lewiss and I'd be happy to guide anyone through any tier aswell tho :)

Thanks for the feedback

@ randomthing glad to have you aboard! I agree fully with the gear criticism, perhaps I wasn't clear - I don't intend to tell people what gear to get, but rather to make suggestions of what gear will work with the playstle they want to adopt. I would also point out any traps such as the 1* gear that doesnt upgrade well.

@ Tipiak to some degree I suppose, but not all new players belong to a guild that has active and experienced players. This is simply another way for new or struggling players to learn the game.

This sounds great to me too, thank you.

I'll look for you online and hope we're playing at the same time. All of those points are things I feel I need work on. My in-game name is Birgus. Hopefully I can become a mentor myself later on...

This would be wonderful.

I'd like some help in this aspect too, I'm a new player but I have a guild kinda showing me the ropes but not well enough that I understand them. I need someone willing to explain to me little by little the small nuanses of the game, and the gear.

I have edited the first post to provide a list of those people who are willing to mentor.

@Yongchi, that would be fine, if you let me know your IGN I will add you to the list.

@Pyre_Light I have messaged you ingame.

@Soulless30 I would be happy to help, as I am sure the others who have posted here would be. What is your IGN please?

Gear selection

I started playing with the Steam launch but haven't had much time to play so I still consider myself pretty new and could use some advice on weapon selection, how to have a balanced damage setup in particular.

Right now I have an Ascended Calibur as my main weapon and a Voltech mkII (soon to be Volt Driver) for some ranged elemental against gun puppies. I also have the 3* freeze bomb and a Kamarin. My long term plans are to have an Avenger and Silent Nightblade for some elemental and shadow damage respectively as well as a Toxic Catalyzer for ranged shadow/poison.

The main hole I have obviously is lack of piercing damage so I guess my question would be should I have a gun or sword cover that and which one? I do lean more towards swords, have tried both the 2-swing and 3-swing varieties and am decent with both but the fast charging of the Flourish doesn't sound ideal, which I guess leaves the Snarble Barb line of swords.

Rockysforumclone
@ Malvos

As randomthing stated earlier, gear selection is a personal choice in this game. There are very few cases where a specific choice is objectively better.

Bearing this in mind, If swords are you passion then flourish and barborous blade line are your only piercing choices. This puts you in a bit of a quandary if you don't like the flourish as barborous blade uses the same attack sequence - only the charge attack is different. If you meant that you don't like the charge attack, then barborous blade may be for you.

Failing that you may wish to elect for a piercing gun. There are some excellent choices and gun selection depends largely on how you like to use your gun and where you will use it most. For pure piercing damage there are the Callahan and the needle guns (Blitz and Plague) at 5*. Argent Peacemaker and Senenza deserve a mention here as well, for their use in FSC, they are piercing/elemental.

I should pint out at this juncture that I am a bomber, so my experience with the above weapons is limited to observation in most cases - maybe someone else wants to chime in?

Feel free to message me ingame to discuss this malvos, or post a follow up here if you like.

I'll do what I can ^_^

I'm not the most experienced player, but feel free to ask me for help doing runs or about anything else.

I've done some t3, but I prefer t2 so far (I'm ahead of my friends who play, so we're holding off on t3 for the time being mostly, as a group anyhow).

That being said, I'd love to help out and do what I can. I'd also love some help getting more t3 experience. So I'd like to be like a sub-mentor, or something. Mentor in training perhaps :P I know a decent bit about all the different gear in the game, but I've not yet memorized every single item, but I can give decent general advice.

In-game names are:

Jace-Jarak (primary almost every day, this would be the best account to mentor from)
Maena-Jarak (Rarely on)
Naed-Stamens (Rarely on)

Hope I can help ^_^

Updated

I have updated the list to include Jace-jarak and Ancientwarrioralph. Those people who have signed up as mentors - are you getting messages from people in game? I get quite a few from people who have seen the forum, but wanted to check wether i should be forwarding some of them or if people are getting their own requests for help.

Hello everyone! For all new

Hello everyone! For all new players looking at this I recommend it fully. I wrote to Rock-Zombie who got me in touch with Jace-Jarak, Jace was very helpful. Jace explained anything I had questions about, and took me on my first run to the first boss.

So if any of you are considering asking for help do so. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the feedback Leaderman - I get a lot of positive feedback from players ingame but it's very helpful to have someone post on here for players who may be unsure.

I'd like to mentor and be mentored

I'm a bit of a new-ish Knight. My Knight Name is Sourix, and I've begun crafting 2-star equipment so I can move onto Tier 2. I only have to make a Defender and Cobalt Armor now (it's going to be my base equipment before I move onto more advanced gear). I completely understand Spiral Knights, like enemies, damage, and hazards (if I'm allowed into your group, then I wish to cover those things and some others). I'm a little weak when it comes to fending off mobs in an enclosed space, but I have my facts, and I think I'd make a great mentor and learner. So, if you will allow, may I be a mentor, and may I be mentored?

Rockysforumclone
@Sourix

I've been trying to contact you ingame, but have so far failed to do so.

I'd be happy to take you on a run or two and help out. There would of course be no problem with you helping out other knights who are starting out, but I am hesitant to list your name if you are fairly new until I have a chance to talk to you ingame.

@rockzombie

I apologize about that. I usually come on Spiral Knights at around 6:30 PM EST (except on Mondays and Thursdays as I have sports practice on those days).

I've been on a few Snarbolax runs, and I've gained access to Tier 2 not too long ago. Tier 2, though, is tough for me. I've been in a few Tier 1 Danger Rooms, but I had to revive quite a few times in each one.

I will try my best to get on at 6:30 today. I will have to go at 7:30 PM today, though, so I will only have an hour of gameplay. And when I'm not pestered with homework or sports, I spend my time on Lockdown trying to make a profit (even though I'm losing 200 or so Crowns every session).

I hope to see you soon, rockzombie!

If you still want mentors

I'm willing to help the little cubs out, show them the Dangers of their first T2 danger room, help 'em spread the most royal of jellies onto the carpet, and anything else really. I'm no 1337 pr0 h4xorz, but I'm willing to help. I'm from the UK, but when I'm on depends on how busy I am. Send me a mail because I don't check the forums much.

T3 arenas

Hi Mysticbeam,

Here are some tips for soloing the third room of T3 arenas: -
1) A big problem for a lot of people is the wave where 8 guns spawn at once. These spawn predictably, they're always the 4th wave and usually spawn when there are very few or no mobs left from the previous wave. Pull the last mob or two right into a corner and finish them off there, then the guns usually won't attack you when they spawn and you can pick them off easily (unless you run around the middle like a noob agroing them all :) This is harder with the blobby jelly kind of turrets, several of those will agro you even if you're right in the corner.
2) Having a good damage bomb is invaluable on the big waves, even if you're not mainly a bomber. I recommend ash of agni (except on fire arenas obviously) since it's non-disruptive, but there are other good choices. If you have one of those with CTR, you can pretty much just kite everything round the edge of the room on the big final wave, and it will eventually die. Even without bomb damage gear, it can outdamage menders if you hit sufficient enemies with it each time and catch some with the central blast.
3) Unlock 4 weapon slots and don't be afraid to have a good variety of weapons. E.g. if I'm running sword spec I'll usually have 2 swords that target different weaknesses as well as a usable gun and a bomb. I'll probably use all 4 in a typical arena depending on the enemies. Sometimes a gun is just what you need against turrets or waves of lumbers.

And the same old general stuff: -
1) Have good gear - obviously 5* items are recommended for soloing tier 3 arenas (not saying it can't be done with less, but it helps)
2) Tailor your gear to the strata/arena you're doing, check the gate map before entering and make sure your equipment is going to provide useful defenses. Chances are you will die if your armour doesn't give you any protection to the damage type monsters in the arena are doing.

Hey Rockzombie

No I'm not new or anything but It may help since I got into tier 2 now...I'm just running throught tier1 because tier 2 is too hard alone for me and people tend to get the materials instead of me.Is there anyway I can solo without having to die due an large amount of enemys.Or do I need more powerful gear(I have 3* gear. All cobalt)?

Bild des Benutzers Foquizzle

Hi Toastyspiralknight, You

Hi Toastyspiralknight,

You should be able to solo most of tier 2 with 3* gear. If you're struggling avoid danger rooms (those that cost energy to open) and the third rooms of arenas, which are particularly tough compared to the rest.

The main thing you need to do is just learn monsters attack patterns - they are mostly very predictable so if you move/block correctly you will rarely get hit. If you're having problems with a specific type of enemy/level let us know and we can probably give you some tips. Make sure you take a gun, some enemies are a lot easier to fight from range, particularly if you're just getting the hang of things. If you're getting low on health you might be able to back off and kill things from a distance.

You can also "bump" enemies away with your shield which is useful if you're having problems against large groups and getting blocked in. There's a room to practice that in the advanced training hall.

I don't mean to be rude or anything...

It's not exactly the same. FNBN is pretty much centered around newbies.

We will not be hesitant to lend a few crowns here and there to our Knight Guildmembers in need, and also we will not be afraid to waste our precious CE helping new members try to beat Snarbolax, Arena Runs, JK, etc, etc :).

I especially don't find that amusing. Plus, when you guys had your Wolver set giveaways, I had some 2-star equipment, so I didn't think I would be considered a newbie. It just felt unfair for all of those newbies to get free Wolver sets and blitz through Tier 2 while I had to work so much just to achieve the same goal.

All this program does is help players understand Spiral Knights and/or assist them. This program doesn't give newbies the easy route, just helps them get better. That's why I chose this program over your Guild.

Hi guys,

Sorry for the delay. I updated the original post to incluse those who have asked to be mentors. Could I also ask for people to provide their timezone so that I could post that as well? I think it could be useful information.

Kngster - you certainly do get better through experience, which is why this scheme exists, to give players experience of runs with more experienced players as well as to help them with advice.

FNBN is a good idea, but it is not the same thing as this - this scheme is in place to help any player who wants advice, regardless of their tier or how long they have played.

I'm stuck in the "in between" stage. I could mentor someone in, tier one (where mentors are really unneeded). Don't quite need a mentor as I'm at the point where I'd not really listen to them anyway, though I'm still tier two level (plan to exit within the month). As for helping starters, I've really not the experience, and my methods are highly, unorthodox.
