Alright folks, new Steam update today and the client is acting up again. If your having issues following the update, just tag your name with a quick description of the issue for trend analysis.
Looking at the Steam server stats, it hasn't caught up to the update which happened around 4pm their time, but there has been big spikes of activity on the content servers, most likely to due to Orcs must Die and the new Dead Rising game.
And I found the answer.

We'll be updating some of the Steam servers Tuesday October 11th, 2011 around 16:00 PDT (23:00 UTC). Chat, game lobbies, and the community web site will be affected. Content downloads and game play should not be affected. There is no database maintenance scheduled for this update, so the downtime should be short.

I have had a terrible bout of staying connected properly tonight. Kept losing touch with server so that item pickups stopped working.
Steam wouldn't affect that. It would actually kick you out of the game and say it had an error with Steam authentication.
I haven't been able to get the client to even update, let alone be able to launch successfully since the update was pushed. I keep getting the no internet connection error, as if the update process is timing out. I've already created a Steam support ticket to find out what the issue is; just awaiting a response on that ticket.
So I can't play any Steam games in my current condition. ><
As a shotgun approach to a possible botched update, you could do a full refresh of the client by deleting everything except the steamapps folder and steam.exe, then starting the client. If you have the cloud disabled, you'll also want to make a backup of the userdata folder to protect your game saves.
I'm getting dumped out of the SK client (steam version) often today and am unable to log back in with Steam authentication errors. Ahh...reminds me of the several day stretch without SK just a week or so ago.
Does the Steam friend list show you as disconnected?
I can not log in via Steam, i get the Auth error in the log in screen, again.
I could play yesterday, but i can not today, and I can not log in the forum via Steam. I could before.
Please fix it, thank you!
Edit: I restared my internet connection, this solved my problem.
There was an Auth error initially when the Firends service was down, but once that reconnected my Steam summy account is performing just fine.
Still, the fact that any component of Steam is struggling is cause to be wary in my book.
