So I have a ok computer, play on steam live in california near servers, and 12mb speed but still only get 2-3 bars of ping? any solutions or what's needed?
How do u get full ping bars?
Try and check those off one by one, if you're technical enough.
Do some benchmark tests on the connection to your ISP's servers, if you're using wireless, switch to wired and see if it changes things.
OK Computer is 14 years old. You'll get faster play with something more modern, like The King of Limbs or at least a used In Rainbows.
It's usually your internet's problem. I have a Emachine E525 and usually have the full 4 bars. If you know anything about computer brands Emachine is THE WORST brand EVER. I also live on the east coast so I'm further from the servers than you.
and use a router that doesn't overheat and have ample of memory.
Turn off your torrents when you're playing.
I have comcast and a netgear router.
Updates to the client have made it have a heavier footprint, it used to be usable on my atom machine running linux, however has not been usable for some time. ISP makes alot of difference, using my laptop on my work network (wired) pretty much the only thing I can do is trade on AH. The same machine at home on wi-fi I can use for light mat collecting, however for serious play a good computer makes a world of difference, I have yet to see anyone load up faster than me (and I am in the UK), so I have taken to load up racing, where I try to take out all the furniture at the start of the level, and sit on the pad before anyone has moved. My preferred variant of the game is reboot racing, where you have to race to the AH1 auction house and Sit down in front of it, before anyone else gets there. I even won it once, after landing in the arcade so needed a double load.
If your using Wi-Fi use a cable?
Do you have V-Sync turned on turning off made a world of difference to me?
What spec is your computer? Having a good graphics card rather than using a built in one makes a surprising difference. SK isn't quite the casual game you might think.
Then it is just down to your ISP, In the UK I use a company called Be there who are gamer friendly and don't packet shape.
I get disruptions from other sources generating destructive interference which sux!
@bopp The Bends is timeless.
Having full ping bars does not equal to loading the fastest.
Ping is usually how good your internet is and loading the fastest is how good your computer is
are not the worst brand ever. They are pretty bad but by no means the worst. Fortunately, they stopped making them but Packard Bells take the trophy for worst personal computers ever foisted upon mankind. Gateway represents a contemporary PC that I would deem worse than an Emachine. Emachines are just low-spec and budget minded, they aren't typically bug-infested, hair-brained concoctions of terrible system design, though.
I have no issues attaining full bars on an 8 year old Dell workstation with GeForce 5200, P4 2.4Ghz, 1GB RAM. My internet is less than 1Mbs cable and I'm East coast. Map load times are in the 45 second to 1 minute range, however.
It seems that ping all comes down to your router, then what type of router do you guys use [name]?
noob question
how (where) do u check the ping bar in SK
Sinister, the ping bars are in the extreme upper-right corner of your screen. There should be four of them, of increasing height.
Well only four if you have a good ping. It most likely will be less
@OP
I got AT&T and a 2WIRE router. My friend has the same setup as you and he always has computer probelms. (Though he is very impatient and never listens when i ell him to refresh the web page >.>)
Anyway You should be fine, do what ^they^ said and you'll be fine
For the record, AT&T annoys me A LOT sometimes
I'm using a D-Link router and a Linksys modem
Though our office is in California, the servers are actually on the east coast (Virginia). We ourselves tend to get 3-4 bars (around 100ms ping time).
@Andrzej Could you please fill us in on the ms that each bar represents?
for example
4 bars = *ms and lower
3 bars = * - *
2 bars = * - *
1 bar = higher than *
Thank you.
Ha not wonder. I live in Maryland so I'm pretty close to the servers
Four bars: 100ms or lower.
Three bars: 101ms to 150ms.
Two bars: 151ms to 250ms.
One bar: 251ms or more.
There's some hysteresis so that it doesn't switch rapidly between levels if you're near a threshold.
andrzej, my ping bar doesnt even show a bar, it shows one red dot. how bad is that?
That red dot is a tiny bar. You are in the last threshold.
I would also like to thank Andrzej for providing this kind of information. Very helpful. ^.^
You must have a bad router or isp
Or the lines outside your house are damaged, etc.
