What's in Development - January 2012

Greetings! I've got another update from Spiral HQ with some of what we're working on right now. As always the following is by no means everything that's in development and there's no ETA on any of this just yet.
Mission System!
A major addition is on the way that adds a new mission system to Spiral Knights, complete with a main campaign that allows Knights to play through, rank up and receive rewards. Missions are selected from an all new interface and are available to every player. Missions within the main campaign that require you to journey into the Clockworks will have the same elevator costs as the arcade.
I can't share too much at this point, but one of the missions in development will have Knights confronting one of the Crimson Order in a fortified castle filled with all manners of gremlin weaponry.
We're very excited about this new feature and will be sharing more information when it's available.
Year of the Dragon
A promotion will soon take flight to celebrate the Year of the Dragon!
Item Balance
Some item balance changes are on the way. Specifically this will target items that require tweaks to have their stats stand apart from similar ones and some changes to handguns to make them more varied and viable in combat. Check the forums for notice of these changes before they happen.
That's all I can share for now, keep your eyes on the testing forum for times when the test server will be made available!

When used properly handguns are plenty powerful. Maybe not so much in shadow lairs but in firestorm and pvp they are quite strong and in many ways a bit too strong because of some broken mechanics people like to use with them. I hope OOO doesn't turn into a company that buffs/nerfs based on what unskilled and inexperienced players think about items...
I'm very glad you are thinking about adding NEW content. I just hope it wont be more tier 1/2/3 cakewalks that end up being easier than firestorm. Nobody wants that.

Who let you back in the House?

Mission System - Proof that the devs do occasionally read the suggestion forum. Thanks, Nick!
Year of the Dragon - I hope this means you're buffing the Dragon Scale Set to not suck so much. ;) A chroma-dragon boss would also be welcome, I knew I saw a little spark of dovahkiin spirit hiding behind those little whelps' bug-eyes.
Item Balance - Oh hells yes.

Please say it's a nuke for Dragon Scale Gear. Please say it's a Dragon Scale Accessory line so I can replace the Volcanics on my helm. Please say all people wearing Dragon gear get free goodies. DRAGONS!
@Nicoya
Dovahkiin were the slayers of dragons. Why would a dragon have the spirit of a dragon killer? Maybe he just has a Dovahs spirit.
...Yes, I am a pedantic stick-in-the-mud, why do you ask? :p

I'm glad that you guys are doing this... Very glad... and not just because more than half of my items are UU and likely get "buffed".
The mission's thing sounds like it could either be-
-Amazing, and genuinely fun, with good new items.
-Awful, and never played. Not as good, but still, something.
-Some kind of strange ce sink... like the shadow lairs were. (as long as they're worth it, and take 50 or less energy to play, with a gain of 6Kish per 50 energy, I'd be ok)
The dragon thing sounds good to me as well.... it sounds like-
-Something akin to the punkin king.
-A new boss of some sort.. please
-A new ce deal with costume armor that will indirectly effect me... which is a plus.
-New content for featured auctions
-Some kind of getup for haven... which wouldn't be too bad at all
The item balance is what I'm really wanting though... it could be-
-Good buffs for weapons that deserve them
-Randomly messing up the old weapons that are already nice.
-Improving weapons that don't really need improving compared to the older ones, which is somewhat neutral imo...
Definitely looking forward to seeing this come out though.

Mission system: Yes, I've been waiting for something like this. Now I'm really curious about how it will execute and hopefully it'll have a story to look forward to.
Year of the Dragon: Can't go wrong with an event.
Items balance: Balance is always welcome.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!
Yay gunners are gettin love!
@Chris, "based on what unskilled and inexperienced players think about items..."
The majority is not as skilled as the most skilled people out there. I was anti-gun buffs becauce I also thought they were fine, then I started to see where we need the buffs and how new players were being left out / inexperienced
New players b/c no 2* star gunner gear, some important guns start at 3* etc and the gear makes us unable to use any trinket cept for DMG bonus
We need the buffs, it cannot be looked at from an elitist perspective (let alone a non-gunners perspective? could swear you are swords)
Remember, the minority know about the game and are skilled
Majority > minority
+1 to gun changes

Really looking forward to the Missions. Can't wait to see some items get balanced, like armor.
I also wonder what Year of the Dragon will be? ^^

Mission time? I heard mission time.
I'm going to be all over this and the Year of the Dragon idea sounds really neat too.

Woohooo! It's about time the the Crimson Order for the Gremlins were given some attention. I was beginning to wonder if that part of Gremlin lore was going to be forgotten into the abyss. Very excited for the missions. Here's hoping for proper execution ;).
Also, nice to see the weapons balance being actually announced; was also wondering when that would be gotten. I'm curious to know what they'll do with the Antigua line as well as the other mentioned lines; and if there are any other balance change we haven't been made entirely aware of.

I'm guessing they're going to open up east haven with another group of elevators for these missions

Let's see...
Mission System: I agree that Spiral Knights really needs some storyline, missions should be some. But what if most of them will be just "Reach depth # to get a piece of candy!"? Oh well, it will be nice to see what they'll come up with.
Year of the Dragon: If it is another promotion like the Dark Harvest Festival: YES. I approve. It was so damn fun going "Trick or Threat" in the Clockworks for the Punkin King. But if it is another promo just as the Explorer's Pack (awesome deals apart), No. I disagree. We don't need more costumes only avaiable via purchase.
Item Balance: Can't comment on here as long as I don't see what they'll do. For now I'll just consider the changes for Antigua line, and I agree on that.

I'm very interested in the handgun changes. It's not that they are lacking power, anyone handy with a Driver can show you that, but that some really don't have a purpose compared to other weapons. I'm looking at the Iron Slug and Callahan here; their purpose is too easily covered with a bomb or sword that is likely more effective. On top of that, it's far easier to stack bonuses in bomb and sword based armor.

- Year of the Dragon
A promotion will soon take flight to celebrate the Year of the Dragon!
*In a "Space Core"-ish voice.*Please let it be dragon themed, please let it be dragon themed, please let it be dragon themed....I want dragons. Dragons...DDDDDRRRRAAAAGGOONNS...I like dragons a lot.
Other than that, a Crimson Order raid? I like the sound of that! As does my Faust. It's hungry for the souls of gremlins. :)

Is making the Gunslinger hats each unique in appearance somewhere in the update Nick?
Can you tell us if your considering what people have said about the monster nerfs?

@Guy I don't actually own a copy of Skyrim, but if you'd like to gift it to me on steam so I can verify this claim of yours I'd be happy to stand corrected. ;)

Missions seem a bit Cliched, but alright. Does this include the resurrection of the Tortodrone?
The likeliness of a Dragon-based boss that's Beast-based? Another boss in general seems unlikely, since Alpha team most likely only had four members and NPCs other than Ozlo and a set few seem somewhat unsubstantial. If it is, infact, a boss then, it's the greatly rumored Ice Dragon.
I'd assume Item Balances include the Sentenza/Peacemaker and some de-nerfs for things such as Chaos, Bombtasic, and Shadowsun?

I am looking forward to the missions as there is an oportunity to explore new places.

@Ironskullkid I was gonna buy it, but then my credit card took an arrow to the knee.
Curse you, steam sales!

"I was gonna buy it, but then my credit card took an arrow to the knee."
"but my credit card took an arrow to the knee."
"took an arrow to the knee"
"TO the knee"

its about time..... that's all i have to say for now

year of the dragon:
hope they bring back that cool white dragon helmet
item balance:
O,o :O :D RLY!!?? OMG i've been waiting for this moment for so long T.T
mission system:
sounds pretty nice!!
@Ironskullkid
I do hope you're not commenting on him using the wrong to, because it *is* the correct to. You fail grammar forever. If not, disregard this entire statement.
@Nicoya
Sadly, I am not made of money, and had to be lame and borrow it from a friend. I plan to buy the inevitable GOTY edition with all the DLC, like I did for Fallout 3.

Happy new content soon dance!
Happy new content soon dance!

Don't you mean the happy new content soon urge to dance?
Ah, has more to do with a wording discrepancy than a wrong to. I'd have you know that all I ever read on the internet is "to" the knee rather than "in". Hell, the KYM article is rather inconsistent with which one it uses. Most of the pictures are inconsistent as well. Both are accepted. At any rate, you clearly do not fail at grammar.
What you gonna do now? Quote the Bible at me? :p

Knights confronting one of the Crimson Order in a fortified castle filled with all manners of gremlin weaponry.
It's a monster house!

Mission System!

Sounds good! New content is always looked forward to, and if it means we get new stuff to do a LOT of people will be happy. If you have an elevator pass does that translate over to the mission elevator also?
Year of the Dragon sounds interesting, hopefully at least a new mask. Personally I am hoping for a dragon boss, but that's just me.
Balances
I expect we will not like all the item balances, but I certainly hope that the Antigua line changes are among them.
~Gwen

^ fight the twins (gremlin weaponry) on scarlet fortress (a castle) - double reused content bonus!

Mission: crimson order and gremlins you say?YES YES YES!!
Year of the Dragon: personally, i think a chromalisk-esque dragon like boss would be suited for this(and new dragon armor)
item balance: definitely needed!

Also, should we expect that the Crimson Order also be like knights? That would be awesome. Knights vs. knights.

Mission system sounds awesome. Can't wait for it!
Also, I am sincerely hoping that the weapon balances include the flourishes in some way. As for handguns, I'm guessing it is the Antigua lines (I somehow have 2 antiguas. yay!), or pulsar lines. (DMG bars same for polaris and supernova, yet Polaris has a status)
Looks like this is going to be a fantastic patch. :D

I'm still concerned that that "weapon balance" line affects RSS. Leave my bombs alone!! D: Go fix Bombastic, but don't you touch my RSS! QQ
Missions sound awesome; altough I'm hoping the "ranking" is similar to pvp ranking and such and is an otherwise arbitrary title; I like SK being a level-less based game, and if "ranks" started including bonuses that make knights stronger than others, it'll forever rob SK of that gear/skill based quality.
If it's how I imagine, and similar to just typical raids "Quick! Go in and kill their faces off!" then it'd be great to have shorter runs than CW travels that are more goal-orientated. Good way to break up the grind.

^ everyone (or at least most) said on the opinion thread about special weapons changes voted against a RSS change. Or, at least, said to make it elemental. Your bomb should be safe. ;)

Gwenyvier - Yep, an Elevator Pass covers elevators in missions.

looking forward to the Mission System. i dropped the game a month ago and when i tried playing it this week it still didn't make me want to play :(
i was just tired of doing the same stuff over and over and over and over... or doing normal T3 runs instead of FSC but not getting bang for my buck (the occasional 5* mat wasn't worth running) hope this will counter it (or make it worth while to do it)

Mission System: here is where we get the story behind all this!
Year of the Dragon: My guess: Its the new boss... Arcane Salamander (plus the new items from its tokens)
Item balance: very welcome news!!!

If its a new boss please give some bombs. Shadow and Elemental damage bombs, not mist or crowd control, would be greatly appreciated!

Looking forward to gear balance. The majority of weapons in the game are perfectly fine as they are, and that includes most guns. But armor is a different story and I'd love to see more sets become viable. Gunner changes need to be on the armor side of things rather than the weapon side of things for the most part, and anyone who says gunning is fine as it is is clearly ignoring the fact that our armor options are terrible compared to swords and we didn't get any Shadow Lair gear. Nobody's calling for damage boosts to polaris, blitz, and alchemers. Iron slug, though? Could use a little love.
And armor that doesn't give an attack bonus needs buffs too. It's rather disappointing how any player's options are realistically limited to two or three sets based on the type of weapon they use, and those sets are in turn just one for piercing, one for elemental, and one for shadow.
Missions sound great. Definitely looking forward to that, regardless of difficulty or anything else. And as a dragon myself, I'm interested to see what the Year of the Dragon celebration has in store, too.
Mission System:
This, this is good. You actually got me excited. Damnit. I just hope that there's not gonna be a ton of shadow lair related missions, though I suspect there will be. Guess I better get to sucking up to people to go on shadow runs. :( This also explains what Ian was working on.
Oh, one suggestion though; please make them repeatable, if you haven't already. Don't make me create a new account to relive missions. D:
Year of the Dragon:
Dragon pet. Please be a dragon pet so I can see all the rage everyone will just explode with. Else a mask that's the head on one of those dragons used in dragon dances. It would be silly.
Item Balance:
I expect the balance to be the split-damage weapons, given the thread that's going on. Maybe we'll see some other tweaks too.
EDIT: Something just struck me. Will boss stratums and shadow key elevators be moved to the mission hub? After all, they seem to fit the pattern pretty well. You even get the mails throughout that talk about the story and the little artefacts at the end. The arcade would become more of a place you go to collect materials and do laid back runs. Sure, the boss levels payout would have to be retooled, since they wouldn't have that 1/3/5 stratum run-up (though it seems everyone skips them anyway). But that might be a bonus. People would grind the dynamic gates for money instead of static boss runs.
Also, it seems that very few use their minerals to actually craft gates. Only a few dedicated groups seem to really do anything with them while the rest autosells or hoards them. So why not give them a use in missions? What use, you ask? I dunno, maybe you use them to unlock missions. I'm not the developer. Just an interesting idea.
