Please explain it to me since I'm stupid. You say its unbound on purchase, support says:

Cronus - Today at 10:58am:
Greetings, The Sonic items you get as a bonus from purchasing Sonic CD are intended to be bound. If you want an unbound item you'll need to either purchase a pack in SK for one, or buy one for energy from Boost.

steam:xxxx - Today at 10:49am:
In boost's inventory there are sonic costumes. They say "will bind when equipped". So I went and purchased Sonic CD (same costumes) in steam, got my sonic costume and... Its bound upon ARRIVAL, not when equipped. Can I unbind it or should I contact Steam for a refund?

Why is there no warning that sonic CD sonic costume is Bound upon arrival?
Screenshots:
"free sonic costume" - no warning its bound.

well in all honesty, it makes sense that it is bound on accepting, I just was hoping it wasn't so I could get a friend to get it for me. $5 is way easier to swing than $20.

But if it was unbound with Sonic CD, other people would just buy multiple copies of the game to get several suits and sell em for CE if they were so inclined.

Another way to think of it is

Another way to think of it is this:

Yes, it's true you can get the Metal Sonic set for a minimum of five U.S. dollars, but if you want to resell the set, you'll have to pay a bit extra in order to receive an unbound set.

And I like how that sounds, because it does set up the idea that OOO is willing to give people both bound and unbound sets of costumes. Compared to a few months ago, where every costume released in a promo was typically bound-on-acquire (with Bombheads and the original Rose Regalia being the few exceptions that I know of), this is a huge step for them to make. Not only that, but it makes the costumes affordable to those who want them for themselves and resellable for those who want them for profit. Which looks like a win-win situation from my perspective.

Round-Shinigami's picture
Round-Shinigami
Nick I didn't buy sonic CD

Nick
I didn't buy sonic CD for sonic CD. I bought it specifically for sonic costume because it is advertised that you get that SAME costume FREE when you purchase Sonic CD. Same as in Unbound. But delivered was a different item. Completely different: its bound.

It should clarify on both Steam and in Spiral Knights that these items are DIFFERENT.

They do have different properties. One in boost's inventory says "bound when equipped" and the one you receive is bound on arrival.

Of course I won't go consult a lawyer for a $5 refund, but I am very, very dissatisfied you are cheating your customers. I'll remember it.

Retequizzle
When there is no disinformation, when you KNOW what you're purchasing, it can be considered as a win-win situation. If you buy a red sportscar and receive a red sportscar with a DEAD BODY IN THE TRUNK you can't really call it "win-win situation".

I just want companies that offer items for $$ to clearly state any limitations concerning their offers. There is a law that forces them to do so. And so I am used to it: If it is not stated that item is bound upon arrival, it is not supposed to be bound on arrival.
OOO/SEGA just broke the rule - they stated that you get same unbound item when you buy sonic CD, but that was a lie. Item came bound.

I'd like to argue that

I'd like to argue that Round:

Unbound items are the exception. Almost everything in SK comes or is given to you bound, and all of the promo costumes and such are bound. Unbound stuff is specifically mentioned as "unbound", so if it has no mention, it's typically assumed that it will be bound like the rest.

@Topic:
Awesome deal.

@Round

I don't feel bad for you. You were trying to make money out of nothing. Instead of paying the $20 to OOO, you wanted to pay $5 to Steam/Sega and then probably charge people $10 worth of CE for it. Instead of trying to take advantage of the system and cheat YOUR customers, next time just don't waste your money and pay $5 to OOO for 1600CE.

Either way, I see a lack of original information, but in the original note on these forums, there is no mention of the Sonic CD items being unbound. It seems if anything, you should be upset at Steam, not OOO/Sega since Steam didn't post the information, and I see no advertisements for buying Sonic CD on this website.

Neodasus's picture

Party Hats were a limited

Party Hats were a limited edition item released into circulation in Runescape 2

because only a small percentage had them, most were left uncirculated and as a result inflated to the hundreds of millions if not billions of gold in a matter of two years

I don't even want to know how much they are in 2012, because those items deregulated the market after 5 years and practically forced Jagex to create a controlled economy run by a progam similar to the NASDAQ.

By the time Rose Regalia is worth anything, I would have quit SK after grad school. Maybe it isn't as likely since the average age of video gamers is 35+ now...but I just don't see myself playing to that point. If you are young like I was when party hats came out, then buying the energy pack for an unbound item would start to show its worth in 3 years. If you really see yourself playing for that long, go for it. The players who have these limited edition items will eventually quit, the items don't go into player circulation....and bingo, you made it.

Just make sure you're getting it for yourself. It will be bound upon arrival, though nowhere in the purchasing page it says its bound upon arrival.
I repeat: Sonic CD gets you sonic costume for $5, and it gets you a retro game. But that costume is BOUND. It cannot be traded. If you want to buy it for yourself - go ahead.

Nick
Guess I won't be getting a refund this time, EA support was nice enough to give me my money back for Battlefield 3.
Please clearly state that sonic CD costume is bound at arrival not on a random forum page, but in the window where it is said that you get a free costume for purchasing Sonic CD in steam.

Retequizzle's picture

Round, you have to learn to

Round, you have to learn to crawl before you can walk. OOO is making progress towards meeting us at a common ground on costumes and whatnot, and that's progress. I'm not going to nitpick at how good it is, because any progress is good progress in that department. With that being said, I'd understand your concern if they were legitimate armor pieces, but they're costumes. Non-essential gameplay pieces used only for aesthetic purposes.

If push came to shove, I'm sure you could file a support ticket and get a more straightforward response if you bought the Sonic CD pack thinking it was the other way around prior to Nick's post clarifying which was bound and which was not. Though I can't imagine you'd be able to prove it without providing a receipt of some kind with the date of when you purchased it vs. the time of the announcement...

But good luck!

Retequizzle
They're pushing you to buy their own product for $5 (SEGA MADE SONIC) that you would never buy otherwise to get a costume that you want to sell.
And they never warn you that you won't be able to sell it.

Its like buying a piece of land on the moon, except it doesn't state anywhere in the deal that piece of land is on the moon.
And its a criminal act in my country.

I did file a support ticket and was immediately sent off - it was intended.

Proof: look up at my post
Thu, 01/19/2012 - 21:14
Nick's post clarifying that costume is bound upon arrival is made at a LATER date.
Thu, 01/19/2012 - 21:26
I can (but don't want to) show my receipt, it clearly states date and time of purchase.

I also got all screenshots - they never say there is any difference between costume you receive for $20 and costume you receive for SEGA game, owner or Spiral Knights.
I repeat: we're being led to believe we are getting same item when we buy SEGA game instead of purchasing it directly from steam.

@Round: Of course they're

@Round:
Of course they're pushing you to buy a product from their own company, that's basic marketing; sell your products to your current customers.
It's the best way to do it. This way, I get a cool retro game /and/ free stuff for my current MMO, I win~win and they get some extra sales that they might not have got otherwise (partially becasue I never even knew the game existed until I saw this offer, the Steam Store really advertised the other Sonic more than the CD one).
You cannae fault them for doin' that; if you don't want to buy the game, then simply just buy the CE.
I mean, if you reckon the costume is worth £4 on it's own (assuming you're never gunna touch Sonic) then you might as wel just pay..what, £10 more to get over 7k CE /as well/as the costume thatyou've alreayd valued at just under half that; you're getting about 3k CE worth for your money, so buying Sonic JUST for the costume is false economy from your own pov really.

@Nicoya:
First thing I tried too. Shame that the Tails don't really suit many costumes though; the best looking combo I've seen yet is on a Wolver Suit or Sunset Duster and...well....yeah....
Will hang onto them until I find a set they go with nicely :D

@Others:
As for the Sonic Stuff? Why buy somethin' just to sell it; as things are you won't breach the CE cap anyways, since it's tagged in Boost and they're actually coming off CHEAPER than the amount of CE you're buying to get them, so you're really not likely to make much money.
Only worth it if you wanted the 7k CE and particularly dislike the Sonic Stuff and just wanna get rid of it. but buying it just to sell? Pfft. Buy it for the normal reason, just buy it becasue you personally think it looks rockin'.
I'll have mine just sittin' there forever along w/ my Plasmatech and when I find uses for them, I can (ilke putting the Sonic and Plasmatech together!! muahaha).
And becasue I got a badass wee nostalgia-driver too :D

Retequizzle's picture
Retequizzle
On top of that, who in the

On top of that, who in the world wouldn't want to play Sonic CD? It's easily one of the best games out there even today. I think the better question is - why would you want to buy a game for a costume to begin with? No one's arguing that OOO made a typo with their announcement (whether they forgot to denote which ones were unbound, bound, etc.), they're arguing the fact that people are trying to get something for nothing. Which is inherently what a bunch of people tried (and failed) to do.

In short, I've no sympathy for your case, but I'm not saying OOO is innocent either.

Darkbrady's picture
Darkbrady
I'd say that OOO weren't in

I'd say that OOO weren't in the wrong; as I said, it's the norm for costumes in SK to be bound, and they specify when they aren't; I think that people who bought the game just to get a costume are...well, s'their fault.

What if it was "Barbie's Dress-Up Pink Fashion Parade" that gave you "Dragon Ball Z" costume (don't ask me why...) would you still buy the game then, just for the costume?

Wolfkit's picture

So, is the Metal Sonic promo

So, is the Metal Sonic promo replacing the Starter Pack, or being added to it?
As in, the Starter Pack cost $19.95 and gave 7500 CE plus other goodies. Now the Metal Sonic promo is bundled with 7500 CE for $19.95
Were I to buy the Metal Sonic promo, would I just get the 7500 CE plus the costume, or would I get the contents of the Starter Pack in addition to the costume?

Because I don't particularly care for the sonic costume, but the trinket and weapon slots upgrades interest me, and if I don't get them with the purchase, I won't make the purchase.

Nicoya-Kitty's picture
Nicoya-Kitty
I was actually a bit

I was actually a bit disappointed when I read the announcement about another cash-costume, but as my previous post shows I did in fact pick this one up. I specifically got it with the Sonic CD bundle because A: I never really played the sonic games the first time around (nintendo 4 lyfe) and wanted to give them a shot, and B: the costume pieces came bound so I wouldn't be sitting there thinking "I *could* equip these, or..." - basically I don't feel like I wasted an opportunity to get something else by using them myself.

I think that OOO handled this promo very well. The costumes look great and aren't out of place (like a giant cartoony sonic head or something), the game bundle is very affordable, the CE bundle comes unbound, and you can buy it from boost (again unbound) without spending a single cent of real-world cash if you happen to be CE rich.

My only sadness is that the sonic costume doesn't grand a movement speed bonus. ;_;

Metal Sonic!

Yeah, I think I'll be buying the Sonic CD deal on Steam and get the Metal Sonic costume with the bonus. As for the Tails Tails (redundant name), I'm debating on whether I should get the special $9.95 package for 3,500 energy and the accessory or if I should go for the $49.95 package for the extra energy and instead spend the measly sum of 3,200 energy with Boost. Any opinions as to what I should do? :)

@Neodasus
Early grats on your 21st birthday! And because I like being an up-to-date nerd, the partyhats' prices range from the purple's 1,017,302,933 gp to blue's whopping 2,147,483,647 gp (max stack, pretty much). It's amazing how much people are willing to spend for a purely cosmetic item that serves no other purpose than looking good, and/or in this case, showing off wealth.

@Nicoya-Kitty
Alternatively, you can fetch yourself some Mercurial Armour and wear it underneath for the speed boost (though you might encounter some mis-matching levels in doing so). I am wondering if Three Rings are planning on opening up for Movement Speed Increase above Medium.
