Weapons and Armor Testing Facility

This was an idea I came up with while thinking about random things. If you wish to provide criticism on this, please do so after reading this to it's fullest extent, thank you.

My idea is the "Weapons and Armor Testing Facility" (name is open to being changed, it's just a temporary name I came up with for it).

[What is it?]

Weapons and Armor Testing Facility (WAATF) allows for players to test out weapons and armor before they actually buy/craft them. It would be completely free to use. (much like Advanced Training)

[What does it do?]

WAATF would be a new building in haven (most likely in Town Square, since a building similar to it; Advanced Training, already is). When you go inside, there will be a medium-sized room that will have a character that allows you to select any weapons and armor you wish to use (whether you have it or not), You will have 4 weapon slots, regardless of whether you have the slots opened or not. Once you have your desired weapons and armor selected, you will be asked which family you would like to fight (beast, undead, slime, etc) and at what stratum. Once you have selected the desired weapons/armor and the desired enemy type, you will be put in an arena-like room that is larger than that of a normal "arena" level that you find in the clockworks. Each "round" will feature a stronger version of that enemy type (for example, slimes would feature Royal Minis first, then move on to things such as Jelly Cubes and Lichen, and eventually end with the Jelly King and Ice Queen (Regardless of the stratum you select, boss enemies will still appear the way they do in their respective stratum). You do NOT obtain crowns, heat, materials, or any other normally-obtained item while fighting in the WAATF, and after you leave the WAATF, you do not get to keep any weapons/armor you picked to use there (equipment you actually had in your arsenal you get to keep, of course). It is simply a free, yet effective way to try out weapons on various enemies before you actually get the weapon, versus having to go by the wiki's descriptions of the weapons (actually getting to test them is always better).

[What makes this any different from the Advanced Training?]

Advanced Training has but one enemy type - Training Bots. Which aren't the best for actually testing weapons out with, because they're neutral to everything. They're also very weak.

Advanced Training only allows you to try out weapons you already have. WAATF allows you to try out any weapon/armor you desire to try out, so that you can get a better idea of what weapons best fit your preferred fighting style, versus possibly getting weapons you might not like. It's annoying to spend all that time, crown earnings, CE, and materials, just to get a 5-star weapon that doesn't even remotely fit your preferred style.

Adding this would do NO harm to the community, NO harm to anything already in the game, however it would greatly benefit almost every player.

Honestly thought this should be added to advanced training tbh. Having a separate hall may conserve space but intuition would tell me Advanced Training Hall should provide this in a different room. (Like a backroom or something.)

However this idea is implemented, know that I agree with it and will thoroughly support it as is.

@ Skold

The reason I had thought it should be a separate hall is because it's not really training. It's actually a bit different. But it doesn't really matter if it's added as a new hall entirely, or an addition to Advanced Training. All that matters is that it is added, since it would be very helpful.

That would be a long list of

That would be a long list of weapons though, and armor testing would require putting on a coat and standing on a pit of fire. You would only need one weapon for each moveset. As in you wouldn't need all of the brandish lines, or all of the haze-variant bombs. When it comes to armor, I'd rather just have a more in-depth armor description.

@ Orangeo: Actually, certain items from various lines are so considerably different, you'd have to add every weapon from every line. For example, the Brandish can become the Iceburst Brandish, Fireburst Bandish, or Nightblade. From there, the Blazebrand, Blizzbrand, and Silent Nightblade. And finally, the Glacius, Combuster, and Acheron. The Iceburst and Fireburst are almost identical except for the matter that one deals fire and the other deals ice. However, the nightblade and fireburst are quite different, both in appearance, and what they do. The Iceburst deals elemental damage, meaning, it's considerably useful against Construct and Undead, whereas, the Nightblade deals shadow damage, which is very deadly against Gremlins and Slimes. The Nightblade also, unlike it's "burst" variants, does not deal any particular status effect. And that's just an example. There are so many variants of so many weapons, and most of the time these variants have different potential uses. Be it because of their effect, their characteristics, the damage they deal, or even their intended fighting style as a whole. You can't just add the Brandish, and say anyone who has used it will have used the Fireburst, Iceburst, Nightblade, Blazebrand, Blizzbrand, Silent Nightblade, Combuster, Glacius, and Acheron. And as for your statement about the armor, Armor description is helpful, but so is being able to actually test it out in a real fight to get a better picture on whether you really want it or not, which is the whole purpose behind the concept of the WAATF. And as for organization, they could simply apply the organization the player arsenal has, with the addition of a search feature like the Auction House.

@ Fehzor: Perhaps the original idea did not have enough support? For any idea to be looked at as a legitimate idea by the game developers, the idea must have a good amount of support by the users. If this gets enough support, we might just see a WAATF in a Spiral Knights update.

@ Hexzyle: No, it's intended to be a free service, much like the Advanced Training. Not EVERYTHING has to take your money away - people aren't going to want to have to spend their crowns that they are most likely saving to craft or buy a weapon with, to TEST the weapon. Making it cost crowns would defeat the purpose as a whole. The idea is to let you test weapons out (normally weapons you are planning to buy/craft, but want to check out before actually using/crafting/buying), so that you DON'T buy/craft a weapon, only to find out is a weapon that doesn't fit your needs/fighting style, and possibly find another weapon whilst testing them out, that actually does fit your needs/fighting style, and you can then work on obtaining that weapon.

@Speedran

I'm pretty sure people would want every version of weapons that are even the same to test shock/fire/freeze possibilities (with the brandishs) for effectiveness in battle.

Can't it just be a small fee? As in 10 crowns per weapon equipped? Or 10 crowns times the star rating of the equipment equipped? Or have it a solo place so that you can't show off to friends armour you do not own?

Speedran's picture
Speedran
@ Hexzyle

Erm, that was my point? xD

There's no fee for the Advanced Training, is there? You don't earn anything or get anything from the WAATF, it's just to test weapons out. Things like Lockdown have a fee because you actually get something from them (Krogmo coins and earnings), it would make no sense to charge you for something that gives you absolutely nothing except more foresight on what to craft/buy and what to not craft/buy. And really? Show off? Considering it's a place that very obviously lets you select whatever weapons you are using, be they weapons you own or not, and it's not going to be just a few people who know about that little fact there since in order to GET there TO group with whoever it is, they too would go through the weapons selection thing. Henceforth meaning that going "You like my Glacius?" while in there, would just make you come off as ignorant. And besides, if you invite someone, it's someone on your friends list... And your friends tend to see you more than just in places like that. So my point is, if you go around flaunting this 5-star load out, and then you appear in a friend's run with all 3-star stuff, they will notice, and you will look like a fool. So I honestly don't think ANYONE is going to be using WAATF to "show off".

Drastix's picture
Drastix
I TOTALLY agree with this.

I think this idea is well thought out, and a good idea. I personally would like to see this in the game, since then, like Speedran said, you can test out a weapon before you go crafting up to 5-star, and discover you absolutely hate it. Cause think about it. You've just wasted about 100-200k crowns for a weapon you now can't do anything with, since you don't like it, and it's bound to you. Your only two options are, sell it for 25k to a vendor, or spend even MORE crowns, or if you're a payer; money, to unbind it, and have a slight chance of someone buying it. It just defies all sanity.

Also, @ Hexzyle: He specifically stated in his post that you get no rewards from defeating the enemies, and you don't get to keep any of the weapons you would be able to test out in there. From what i understand of what his idea was, it's JUST for testing stuff out to make sure it's as good as you think it is, BEFORE you go through all that time and energy. Taking someone else's word for how good it is isn't enough. It depends on preference and fighting style. The wiki doesn't even have enough information to tell you whether it would fit your fighting style and preferences. Only actually using one can give that kind of info.

@ Drastix

That was my point entirely. And the reason we need the WAATF to be added into SK.

Totally support your idea, all my reasons have already been discussed, but should it be limited to your current unlocked tier and the one above? So if you're in tier 1, you'll have access to T1 and T2 gear, and if you're in T2 or above, you can access all the gear. This way, some of the newer players would still have the incentive to craft weapons to use, and older players can try weapons out without crafting them at the same time. This is just in case newer players try out all the weapons and might get bored of the game quickly. (not saying most would, but idk, some might)

totally agree with you and with Nubskills' idea. Wiki sucks. Ur idea makes complete sense. It would be better for all this to be solo to the player. So he/she specifically know what damage is being dealt.
p.s. lmao change the name! i kept reading WAATF as Whaaa The F***! xD

What you have described is what really should have been the "Advanced Training Hall". You can practice with any weapon/armor/shield against every type of monster. Name really isn't important to me, it's just that the current ATH teaches the equivalent of any single depth (ergo, useless) so it really shouldn't be called that... But I digress...

I have to disagree on one thing, there has to be some sort of fee to do this. Something really minor, like say, 100cr per 12/24 hours of unlimited access or something of the sort. Maybe you buy a usable "ticket" that gives you access to the area when active. I don't know about you, but I'd probably be in there whenever I'm out of mist to still get the enjoyment of playing the game at no cost if it were free. Adding a little fee just makes sure you're using it for the right purpose (testing new potential loadouts), not just to have fun slaying monsters outside of the Clockworks.

Also, this kind of thing would make gathering damage table data for the wiki much easier :3

More replies.

@ Nubskills: Considering it allows you to choose any weapons/armor, regardless of equipment, having a feature that still limits you on what you can try out simply because you're Tier 2 or lower would not be very efficient.

@ Canine: From that view, you're right, solo would be more efficient. Plus, it would remove any incentive for people to just use that as a replacement for actual play.

I have no comment on the interpretation you have of WAATF...

@ Extribble: Exactly!

Hmm... you have a point. But if a fee were to be added, it should be in the way you described it. A very small, very affordable fee (100 crowns), that gives you access to the WAATF for a full 24 hours.

Indeed, it would.

@ Diamondshreddie: Hopefully Spiral Knights developers would also like to see it...

@Speedran: Did you read my post carefully? :P The only restriction that I suggested was to limit Tier 1 players to trying out equipment 4* and below lol
Oh yeah, did I forget to mention how awesome your idea is? *scrolls through previous posts*
@Canine: Exactly what I've been reading it as lol! Hmm, solo would be a good idea too.
@Extribble: The fee is a great idea, from what I've seen most of us here would agree with that, I guess it'll be like the fee for Lockdown....
@Diamondshreddie Well, I guess "WAFT" sounds better than "WTF" LOL
@Fallconn I'm starting to think you title each of your posts with the Falcon Punch o.O

@ Sizuki: If you want to make your own suggestions for the game, please do so via a suggestion thread, not in someone else's suggestion thread, thanks.

@ Phiero: Thanks?

@ Az-Rel: Bad idea. That would make it so that in order to test out weapons, you have to be in a guild. And not everyone wants to have to get into a guild just to use something like this. The only two efficient options would be to either add it as a new room in Advanced Training, or add it as a new area in Town Square in Haven.

Add another floor to the Advanced Training Facility, so that no more room is taken up in Haven, and have it be the second story of the place.
Terrific idea, needs implementation ASAP.
