Spiral Knights Forums Ignore Script v1.08

This forum lacks a vital function... an ignore list.

That is where Greasemonkey can help. Now you too can manage your own personal list of ****** and pretend they don't exist! This script was originally for another drupal-based forum, so I didn't author it originally. I just updated it to function specifically in the SK forum and fix some browser compatibility issues.

For those not familiar, Greasemonkey allows you to run scripts on any web site, customizing their appearance and functionality. It works best in Firefox, but this script works in Google Chrome too. There are ways to get it to function in IE, but I'll leave that up to more adventurous knights.

Installation
Go to: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/105854
Click the Install button on the top right.

Usage
This script will add an Ignore list link to the very bottom of the page when viewing threads or a forum index. Enter a name in the box then select Kill, Hide or Dim as your ignore option. Click OK to save changes and see the results or not see the results if you selected Kill [insert evil laugh.]

v1.08 Updated so that it runs under Chrome too.
v1.05 Cleaned up the script to get it ready for public use.

SK's forums aren't active enough to have this?? Who would you hate anyways, replies take from 15mins - 7 hours.

Well I think this is a bit

Well I think this is a bit stupid, unless it's someone who rants pointlessly on the forums(don't you dare point your finger at me you motherless skunk lover), you're going to miss out on some very important threads & posts. This community lacks trolls anyways.

I dont think its a good idea

I dont think its a good idea to post it here.

From what i saw most of people will just ignore you for criticising his ideas, posts or not agreeing with someone. Most of people here cant differ troll from someone who actually thinks, have other opinion than others or common spammer.

Also if its really working, the era of "oh wow, you dont agree with me u troll, ignored, you can post anything blablabla whatever i dont read" and mysterious posts "oh well i dont know what you wrote since i ignored you (but how did i know you posted anything?)"

More useful script would check when topic was last time active and would make BIG RED popup informing you that you are necroind this thing. One should make that script and force it to all forum users.

#TeamAsukalan

I support anti threadcromancing script. Popup should scream:
HEY YOU
YOU'RE ABOUT TO POST ON A THREAD THAT HASN'T BEEN POSTED ON FOR HOW LONG
IF PEOPLE DON'T LIKE IT THEY'LL TEAR YOU APART
WATCH YOUR STEP
OR ELSE YOU WILL DIE
and then Ganon's face should pop out
and then there's like this button
"OH MY GOD I'M SO SCARED SCREW THIS POST I DONT WANNA DIE"
and another button
"f that I'm the witch doctor and this thread shall rise again"

Ookay that wasn't as serious as I intended.
But Asukalan isn't going full-blown ADAMANTIUM RAEGE so yeah, he's probably got it right.
Probably.

Hmm

Thanks Paweu, I agree :)

An anti-necro-posting alert would be nice, but the kind of person that necros a topic has no idea what they are doing and wouldn't use a script like this. That's actually going in the other direction of the purpose of this script. What is possible is to add a warning as a reader that a topic is from 2010 and not worth clicking on just to see that it is a necro. You can still decide whether or not to click on it, it would just warn you that it probably isn't worth the time.

That's how I use the ignore list, at least. I select "hide" for some posters, that way it'll let me know there is content I'm missing. I can click "show" and see what they wrote. But they are on the ignore list because in my past experience there is little thought put into the comments and likely isn't worth reading. I have much better things to do, like play video games.

On the other hand, people that post inane banter that they put a lot of thought into, I enjoy reading. They wouldn't appear on my ignore list, but that's just me.

Personally,

(Fair warning, it's a little loud.)
I think the Anti-necro script should be about 5*(months-1) seconds of this with the background replaced with "Necro" before you'd be allowed to post in it. Would be pretty effective.

Why not just ignore the posts

Why not just ignore the posts yourself? Kids so lazy and have no willpower of their own.

I foresee both Falconn and I

I foresee both Falconn and I getting put on at least one person's ignore list very quickly. Not a thing I will personally use, as I have seen in the past on other forums that the trolliest people occasionally make posts worth reading, but I won't blame people for using it.

If you use the script then enjoy. :)

@Batabii

I looked into creating a report button (also strangely missing from this forum software) which would prefill the contact support form with the reporting URL and the perpetrator... for spam or scams or whatnot. But there isn't a technically feasible way to do that... do View Source in the client portal some time and you'll see what I mean.

Everyone should feel free to submit requests, even simple things like fixing site CSS. Some features that I've been working on include:

  • Google site search, as an alternative option to the forum search
  • Option to display image URLs inline
  • Link to wiki topic keywords/abbreviations
  • Not really a problem recently, but, an option to autohide threads that mention Energy or CE, especially if written in all caps
  • Automatically extend session expiration when you visit the forum, this would remove the daily login as long as you visit frequently
  • Option to skip to save instead of first previewing when posting

I still don't get why Bata hates sigs so much....

Not like it's constant rickrolling or anything, or even something you should make a big deal out of.

Like if I decided to put an extra full-stop at the end of my post. It's no big deal, there isn't a reason to care.

Just an idea

Actually I'm good with ignoring some posters without a script ;-) but I wonder if there's a chance for an option to "highlight" certain posters. Especially since we got limited number of avatars.

Even though I try to read whole thread if I find it interesting, sometimes I don't have enough time. In such cases I would appreciate the possibility of seeing all my favourite posters* at first glance, without the need of going through some off-topic squabbles.

*Not so numerous group of people who post things that I find interesting, valuable, funny and generally things that contribute to my game-play or influence my opinion.

Personally

If I'm arguing with someone, I'd rather know what they say, because if I don't know what they're saying, I can't do anything about it.

i.e. I ignore someone. They say I suck my thumb and cry at night to everyone else in the room. I don't know about it.
Result: Everyone thinks i suck my thumb and cry at night.

But if I don't ignore them, I can at least dispute the statement.

Like that time someone called me a scammer...people said I should've ignored him, but if I ignored him, he could say all sorts of stuff about me to other people and I wouldn't know.

However, if someone's just being annoying...

That's a different story entirely.

Bippity bump! Does anyone have this archived or installed? Given that userscripts.org appears to now be down for good and archive.org's WayBackMachine thingledingle doesn't have this page archived, it would be very much awesome if we were to throw it somewhere else so that others can enjoy this script as well.

A tool made by an - oh my I cannot say this in here, ugh I hate having to censor myself.

Basically a tool made for butthurt people amirite? since anything offensive or personal attacks/spam or pretty much anything that could upset someone would be met by a ban or post deletion from the GMs. So really, pointless unless youre that much of an emo that you can't stand to see someone else's posts on a forum, geez.

But hey, that's just my opinion I have nothing against the people who use it for whatever reason.... aaaaannnnd 50 people have just blocked me because of this post right? perfect.

Aviri i agree with you for just once...:P

As he said what's the point of it?...will you kill or delete people who are annoying to you in real life?(i hope not)
This is just a way of escaping from problems ,don't escape from the problem instead confront the problem and find a better solution...
I like your efforts on posting this but i just think its not morally needed...

(even if at times it is true that them stupid posts in the forums makes me want to smack a keyboard in their faces but i still control myself (¬_¬)

moral? who cares about morals? not only I am letting others know what I think, I am also launching a preemptive strike, With that post I just got rid of anyone salty enough to go and block me just because they do not agree with me or people with an overly sensitive behind that just cannot deal with facts and opinions... or my attitude wich I certainly know that is not the most pleasing of all... too bad, because I like the way I am lol. Anyway, that post there saved me a lot of trouble now I guess I've actually found a use for this tool, how convenient.

what if

What if you lived next to somebody who played loud, noisy music all of the time. You asked them to stop, but your irritation only amused them. You couldn't get help from the police, because there were no noise laws. But one day somebody gave you a tool that would block out noise from that house while letting you hear everything else normally. Wouldn't you use it?

Trolls and jerks on forums can be just like that noisy neighbor. In theory, you can just ignore them. In practice, their posts constitute a kind of "attention pollution" that makes your life worse. So why not block them out, if you can?

I'm not advocating use of this filter against everyone who disagrees with you. You can learn a lot from such people, if they converse with you in good faith. I'm talking about the people who converse in bad faith, and who delight in your discomfort.

Imagen de Avihr
Avihr
Void

Except that you actually have to read the user's posts to get annoyed and nobody is putting the words in front of your eyes making you read them, unlike your noisy neighbor you cannot just choose not to listen to his loud music, but you can choose not to read someone's posts by just looking at the name of the poster and well... not reading what he says, I get that some people might feel a bit more comfortable just not seeing the posts at all, so yeh maybe this tool is not all that useless, maybe it's something more like... overkill? XD

Imagen de Dreamless-Reaper

Bopp

Nice example but not quite because those are comments which can be easily ignored also you shouldn't let comments in the internet affect you because if someone gets always hurt by something he wont go far in life...

._. You know that jerks search for attention
If you don't give them attention = no gain for them
No gain =pain for them since they lost the only place left which they felt special (due to forums rules i will restrain myself(⊙ω⊙)

Ignoring is not that hard the issue are the so called'Brainless' who thinks its funny and have to be sidemens and tag along making the forums a bad place to stay in ^^.

But that also follows the same cycle of what i wrote before so just ignore and keep going and everything will be alright its not that hard ;)

Wonderful, another tool for the bigots and the unenlightened on this forum. Such a nice way to silence different voices and continue on with your meaningless, ignorant existance, this thread should have stay dead.

Imagen de Sir-Henry-Cooldown

Wouldn't ignoring people be pretty much counter-intuitive? People reply to others, so it would cause more confusion.
Also I don't trust random installations.

Straight-Line

you could ignore EVERYONE by not going on the forums

Imagen de Hexzyle

I add people I like to read the posts of to the ignore list but I set the function on "Dim", which effectively highlights their posts and makes it noticable when I'm flicking through a thread. I also add people I dislike to the Hide list then show their posts anyway which gives me a heads up when I'm about to read something cancerous like a biohazard sign on a terrible fanfic.

Imagen de Krakob

People actually dislike this? It's just an implementation of the ignore list we know and love in game. Ignoring is a downright crucial aspect of most internet communication protocols. It's how people instantly can avoid online harassment without awaiting the support of moderators of the service. It's why you stay poor and don't get rich thanks to Nigerian princes.

If you want to use this script to avoid people you disagree with, that's fine with me. It's called being a politician and in a democratic world, everyone has the right to be a politician. I wouldn't want to be a politician, though. Bopp is very right in saying that you can learn a lot from people you disagree with. The only ones I fancy ignoring are the ones who contribute nothing to the forums but meaningless clutter and stupid trolling.

Y'know, I have changed my mind about this thing, I am very positive that if oversensitive/crybaby/butthurt people get to block me before I even get into a painful and brain cell killing argument with them, It will be better for both of us, everybody wins. And I don't even need to lift a finger!

Culture is a friggin genius.

I remember this. I believe I used it to disregard a certain someone that cared deeply about whether every single person on the face of the earth refered to the jelly king as "The Royal Jelly" at all times. Needless to say, dealing with this individual became incredibly silly very quickly and I didn't hesitate to solve the problem.

But then I'd go into threads and it would look like this-

Person A: "The jelly king is a good source of crowns."
Person B: "Yes, he sure is."
Person A: "I don't care if he's called the royal jelly or the flying banana or anything... that isn't relavent"
Person C: "If people rename him to JK, then he becomes JK, just like if we renamed you to whatever, you'd be called that too all of the sudden."

And then I'd have to go down, and turn off my filter and see that every other message the person I'd removed was derailing the thread I was trying to read. It really didn't solve anything.

Yeah, that was a bit annoying. The hide feature works well for that, but my curiosity usually gets the better of me and I choose to view the stuff anyway. Anyway, that particular person wasn't worth ignoring. His arguments with Zeddy about Greavers were just too adorable.
