I was passing through Moorcraft (or at a dungeon vendor, don't remember), when i noticed a demo helmet, with an increase in th effects of bombs, and stoped to read its description...and then, it rang quite familiar in my ears/eyes.

The purpose of this thread is see if we can find some references in the game (better sooner than later), and maybe give some inspiration to the developers so they put more fun content like this in the future, because this mean that they have quite a sense of humor ^^.

For now, i've only found one reference (apart from the zelda reference in cutting grass to get hearts e money), and i pretend in adding all the references people give (with their respective names) in this first thread, so, let's begin:

-The demo helmet descritpion is a reference to the game Residen Evil. When Jill receives the lockpick at the beggining, the one that gives it to her says "Take this lockpick, it should come in hand if you, the master of lockpicking, take it with you". Now, for the helm descritpion, it is more or less like: "A reinforced helmet that might be handy if you, the master of exploding, take it with you.". I think it is coincidence enough -Cien_Tao-

Mmmhmm. Great.

I really wish the devilites would hold still so I could read the text; it's almost inevitable that there would be an office space reference there.

Hahah, I'd love to see more stuff like this. Thanks for pointing this out, Cien! If I find anything, I'll share it here.

On a somewhat related note, there should totally be a knight waiting for you just outside the escape pod who gives you your proto sword and says, "It's dangerous to go alone! Take this."

Gremlins now drop "Gremlin Gizmos", there's no description for the item yet (I think!) but surely this has to be a reference to the most adorable gremlin of the 1980s.

I've added a new description to the gremlin gizmo that will be in the next update. For once, I wasn't actually trying to reference a movie or something and ended up doing it all the same! Now it has a proper reference to the classic film.

Absolutely. I was considering being more subtle than that, though. Something about it being able to destroy elements of all sorts, including Plutonium? The weapon of choice for Knights who tire of using homing missiles? I dunno. We'll see. :D

Nameless poncho has an

Nameless poncho has an identical design to the poncho that Clint eastwood uses in the "Man with no name" trilogy, the same with the nameless hat.

The sunset stetson description makes a reference to the spaguetti western movie "For a fistful of dollars".

The gun Callahan is probably named after Harry Callahan, the character that Clint Eastwood plays in the dirty harry series.

The name of roarmulus twins makes a reference to the founders of the city of rome: romulus and remos.

Faust: There's a dude with that name in a german play that sells his soul to the devil in exchange for knowledge.

I know all the people from this nearly year old thread are probably all gone and will never see this but the game starring Jason Frudnick searching for his pet frog using the s.o.p.h.i.a. tank is 'blaster master'. A 'master blaster' reference would need to read something like 'Who run barter town?'.

Oh, zombie thread :)Acheron

Oh, zombie thread :)

Acheron probably is related to Greek Mythology - a river of the underworld.

Grintovec, Jalovec, Triglav are mountains in Slovenia, Triglav being the highest.

Sudarus(h)ka is some russian folk dance. Same applies to Troika and Khorovod.

Spark of Life

Description:
A powerful essence that presents itself to beings in dire straits. With this, you feel like you could turn the nighttime into the day.

Referencing the song Walk of Life by the Dire Straits, one of the lines in the song is `turning all the nighttime into the day`.
Definetely one of my favorite references.

I think these quotes are all there is so far:

"Someone's getting a promotion..."
"I'm glad I caught you. I'm really looking for someone to rise to the challenge this weekend."
"Go ahead and come in on Sunday, too."
"I'm not asking you to come in on the weekend, but everyone else is, so..."
"Remember, Friday is Hawaiian Shirt Day, and every other day is unpaid overtime day." (I think this one went something like that.)

Also, how could no one know the song referenced in this? http://wiki.spiralknights.com/Plasma_Cell

Stuff

Here's a list of references I think I've figured out, along with references others have figured out, in no particular order:

Sealed sword: any number of things, if any

Faust line: clearly a reference to Faustbach

Avenger line: not sure, but clearly there is something there

Troika line: confirmed to reference folk dances and mountains

Snarbolax and the gear: Lewis Carroll reference(s)

Flamaberge line: possible reference to Renaud de Montauban, or a simpler reference to a certain style of sword blades, often found on rapiers, that were wavy, whose name translates to "flame blade"

Rigadoon Line: the Rigaudon is a french folk dance. That's it.

Flourish line: google "flourish"

wild hunting blade: possible reference to the "wild hunt" legends

Acheron: river of pain of the greek underworld. also just a river in greece.

Voltedge: back to the future reference

Cautery sword: look up "cauterization"

Cold Iron line: google "iron in folklore"

Calibur line: reference to Arthurian legend

Proto Sword/shield/gun/bomb: Proto:Original; primitive, or first; anterior; relating to a precursor (it's the first gear we get)

Aegis: shield of either Athena or Zeus in the Iliad

Blast Bomb line: they have bomberman faces (?)

Electron Vortex: description contains a reference to thunderstruck, by AC/DC

Roarmulus Twins: reference to the wins Romulus and Remus, the alleged founders of Rome

Devilites: they spout numerous lines from Office Space

Greavers: possibly allusion to griefers from other online games. this assumption is made on the grounds that greavers are often very irritating

Trojans: I don't need to explain this one to most people, but if you need it explained, google "trojan horse"

Jelly Green Giant: Jolly Green Giant

Howlitzer: it's a type of canon, although that might be unintentional. It might be an attempt at a pun off of the word "howitzer," which an another artillery piece

Droul: "ghoul"(+ "drool"?)

Frankenzom: Frankenstein monster; brought to life with lighting

I'll post more after lunch

And making a completely new thread instead of keeping those old but still relevant and interesting posts is clearly better, isn't it?

People need to stop being so paranoid about necros. There's nothing wrong with it if the topic is still relevant, and the thread bumper has something to add. It's even a bit nice to see those old posts again.

On-topic: /flex is still the best reference to anything ever.

I find it jarring that they purposely typo'ed Moorcroft into Moorcraft, just to make it sound like Warcraft. It's a forced reference.
