Are Battle Sprites what the Garrison Lab is for? Discuss!
Battle Sprites and other updates
I feel like there will be many flipped tables over the incoming "pets." But, I'm willing to give them a try. I also want to name the kitty Mew. Anyone else immediately think of Mew when they saw that?
... I digress. Yes, I do think that's what the lab is for. Nick even included that in the post. He said it would be "a significant part of the Haven Garrison's Laboratory."
So then I wonder, what's the rest of it for, if it's anything different?
Nick said himself that the Sprites are going to be used in conjunction with the lab.
My biggest concern is if we will be able to name our sprites.
Three starter sprites eh?
Spiral sprites! GOTTA CATCH EM ALLLLLLL!
Back when the GH update brought us the lab, I had a feeling this is the direction it would ultimately lead. I know there are strong mixed feelings about this one, but I am excited to see a new mechanic being added to the game. I also hope, however, that this means we'll have some new, harder content coming with the sprites that will necessitate their use.
OH MAH GOSH THAT ONE LOOKS LIKE MEW I MUST HAZ IT NAOW!!!11!11!
Seems like 100% new stuff is coming :O, Cant wait
That's going to be a very tough decision.
In any case, I'm excited to have something new added to the game. I'm interested in how customizable they will be. And how big. I imagine they won't take up much screen space.
"I also hope, however, that this means we'll have some new, harder content coming with the sprites that will necessitate their use."
This.
Since they're gonna be early-on rank missions, it seems they want to emphasize everyone should have one of these.
Anyways, I'm really excited. Quite a coincidence how I want a seraphynx, and it conveniently gives defensive buffs.
I'll probably still try them all out anyways, just to see how they work.
After reading the description of Battle Sprites, I am starting to see this as a good addition. However, there is one big issue: the game is already easy. In order to justify adding even more dakka to a Knight's arsenal, the game difficulty needs to go up. Likewise, the thought of having four knights each with their own sprite may have a rather negative impact on game performance. Hopefully these issues will be properly ironed out before their release.
I must...can..because...Battle Sprites....for to...now...love...then...we...when...new stuff...out
What happens to Lockdown now?
Sounds interesting. Seems kinda like dem pokemons. But my biggest questions are: Will these "battle sprites" be used in PvP?" Like LD or would an entire new PvP be for these?
"I also hope, however, that this means we'll have some new, harder content coming with the sprites that will necessitate their use."
+1, but more : I hope CURRENT content will be made harder to compensate for the help of sprites. I REALLY hope. But sadly, I'm desillusional.
Well, wait and see. I guess "first half of the year" means "not before summer".
Although these seem like a nice concept and all. I seriously hope these guys cannot be used in Lockdown. All people will do is just use the Defense Buff Cat and just continue with their polaris spam.
What Shovel said and
GOTTA CATCH EM ALL! Will we be able to have more than 1? I know the patch notes are kind of lob sided because in the beginning it says you will be able to adjust different sprites to your themed load out yet at the end it says you choose 1 of 3?
You do realize that if these are equippable in PVP. People will have an even greater advantage against others. (not that they don't already, but clearly they'll abuse it even more harder than they already do.) it will just be completely unfair, and PVP will just be ridiculous and even more people will hate playing it. It's just going to become a war of, "OH, YOU CAN'T BEAT ME WITH MY BUFF SPRITE. I'M BETTER THAN YOU"
Ah c'mon! You're already dissing them before you even get a chance to see how they work in practice X3
They might even balance LD a little for all we know. Emphasis on "might".
I'm not dissing it. just putting it out there to be aware of what it might turn into.
Answers to a few questions:
- You will ultimately be able to own and raise more than one sprite, though your first selection is an important one.
- You can name your sprite and customize certain aspects of its appearance. The promotional images are just one example of the final form of the three sprites.
- The use of sprites in the Coliseum is still up for debate, though we're only going to include them where it makes sense (not Blast Network).
- The Lab is not solely dedicated to battle sprites.
Well it all depends, if it is available for LD, the party sprites will buff/debuff team/opposing team.
@Nick "- The use of sprites in the Coliseum is still up for debate, though we're only going to include them where it makes sense (not Blast Network)."
It seems as if you have more plans for PvP other than BN and LD :o
Will we be able to give our Sprites costumes, etc, etc? The idea of having them all snug in a nice warm furry jacket is too irresistable
Just wondered about the negative aspects of implementing this in PvP.
Hit frames
If these dragon pet things are AI controlled, it means we can't control them when they decide to attack. If we don't know when they're going to attack, the hits they connect with will mess with our attacks because of inv. frames. Unless you bypass this somehow, PvP + Dragon = No good.
One question; how exactly would we "equip" a sprite?
Would there be a new slot dedicated to sprites? If so, will it be open? Or will it need some kind of upgrade?
Icegill - Sprites use their skills when you want them to, via a key press.
MEW! :D
This is rather hilarious for some reason.
Can I ask, how will we equip these? Would we get some new slot? Would we use a weapon/trinket slot? Would we equip them at all? I'm kinda puzzled right now. @_@
I hope there will be a Jelly Battle Sprite, SLOOMS UNITE
Sprites will be equipped similarly to how other equip-able items are implemented. Once you complete the rank missions dedicated to introducing them, you will be able to equip one.
Can Sprites die? If so, would it cost CR or CE (or both) to revive them? Can they be revived during battle?
UPDATE. Looks like Sprites are like equipment. So they share life with our knight. In another words, they can be revived during battle with CE.
I'm hoping this isn't like in MMZ4, where you had that stupid little sprinkly-sparkly constantly firing stuff at nothing and being invulnerable.
Here's another question: in addition to customization and leveling, is there going to be a UV-style element to them? I'm thinking along the lines of what's already in game: ASI, CTR, dmg/status resistance, etc.?
And thats, how Pokemon in Spiral Knights has started...
I guessed, that it will be used in new mini game, but we will look, eh.
Anyway; @Nick, lockdown has always been test of team invidual skills isn't, it? In content of pet, im negativly disposed to this. Just no... i beg...
If you ask me, they absbsolutly SHOULDN'T be avaible for the newbies.
and we already have 31, wait no 32 posts.
Some of us really want pets.
NINJA!!!
Will Sprite names clash like Knight names?
For example a player can't have the same name for a sprite as another player?
As happy as I am to see a new combat option, I have to ask. Are you trying to make the game easy?
Right now, let's face it, Wolvers get torn apart by anyone with a piercing weapon, especially the Dark Briar Barrage. Will there be buffs to Wolvers and other less powerful enemies to compensate for us getting little minions to give us buffs and extra attacks, or will you just be leaving the enemies as they are?
Also, you mentioned Maskeraith is for those who like to "hide in the shadows". Does this mean you'll add some sort of Stealth mechanic to the game?
EDIT: Also, what Grittle said. Jelly Battle Sprite for the win!
And I say hey
But in all respect, some people are doing barrel rolls right now.
Doctahwahwee - No, everyone can name their sprite Sephiroth.
You are a god amongst men for making that comment. As well as various other things you have done, like make this game.
Thank you Nick for answering my question so fast! I myself would like to see an entirely new PvP for the use of these.
I like how Torchlight 2 implemented pets. Maybe this could be similar? They help in battle automatically (if you want them to be aggressive), but if they run out of health they run away for a while to recover and as such can't help you. They also slowly recover over time. Maybe that's an option aside from them being invulnerable?
Anyway... these three pets very much seem to reflect the Striker/Guardian/Recon play styles, even though those three classes are only available in Lockdown.
... interesting.
Do you have any idea when this will be finished, or even on the Test Server?
Also, I think I ninja'd your post up there. Please answer my above questions if you can.
Doctorspacebar - Can't say at this time but you'll know more when we do our individual spotlights on each sprite some time in the future.
Oh man, I just figured out what I want...
@Nick
My biggest concern its the "battle" i mean.
the pet will attack ONLY when the owner attacks or they will attack whenever they want?
because if they attack whenever they want then they look an enemy i will find that pretty annoying because that sometimes its a trouble in groups when you kinda have some kind of control of the situation its kinda like "im freezing this kill first the trojan before they melt" so if the pet go and attack the frozen enemy before a knight wouldo do the job, melting the trojan and making a big trouble for the group THATS its what worries me for a battling pet. also that can make some knights lazy running around while the pet hits the stuff.
So Nick. Pets attack only when the owner do ( PLEASE PLEASE MAKE THEM ONLY ATTACK WHEN THE OWNER DO AND TO THE SAME TARGET AS THE OWNER MIXING THEIR POWER WITH THE OWNER) or they attack at their free will?
So... a couple of things that concern/interest me, some questions, some praise:
"- You will ultimately be able to own and raise more than one sprite"
Will you be able to own all of the sprites, and is there any kind of upkeep cost on keeping a sprite?
", though your first selection is an important one."
Will this be limiting in any way?
"Players can feed materials to the Sprites for faster leveling and control the abilities they develop."
This is good, and I love you.
"The first three Battle Sprites represent three different play-styles."
What if I play as a "Guardian" in the clockworks with my favorite armor- "Volcanic plate mail"? Will there be a "guardian themed" sprite that lowers my attack speed and deals next to no damage for me to utilize? "It's a fine choice for knights who wish to aid their fellow party members." Does not sound like the guardian style I know and love.
And of course....
1. How do you plan to compensate for the obvious fact that this is a huge boon for the knight, but not so much for the opposition? Older players are often concerned- as you know- with the fact that the game easily becomes almost "challengeless" to them once they reach T3 and beyond.
2. Do they die? If so, how do you "get them back" and if not, how do you plan to make it so that players can't just hide while their pet does everything?
3. Regarding their movement- Will these pets be an extension of your knight entirely, or will they be more akin to the mecha knight kits? If they are an extension, what differentiates them from weapons other than the fact that they are "alive" and if not, how do you plan on keeping them "out of the way" as the other three knights in the party attempt to strafe?
I suppose that's all I can really think to ask. I will not judge these "sprites" until I see them live, and in the game.
Three different play-styles
- Swords
- Guns
- Bombs
Sprites use their skills when you want them to, via a key press.
Does this mean I press button 1 for sprite skill A, and button 2 for sprite skill B?
How customizable are the sprites, specifically in the colors? Are we just allowed to choose a color scheme and a personal color? Or, can the color scheme be finely adjusted as to include the colors in primary, secondary and joint?
Edit: Will there be new UVs attainable on armor / helm / weapon related to sprites? ie +sprite attack, +sprite defense, +sprite hp, etc.
Re: Everyone wanting the game harder with the Sprites addition
That runs counter to what the devs have been doing for the past several months. Also, I'd make the arguments that they didn't make the game easier more than they made it more reasonable. Let's face it, there's a pretty harsh limitation on strategy in this game, it boils down to "hit things" "hit things and inflict status", and "inflict status". Most battles come down to "Hit, hit, hit, shield, hit hit, shield" and little else from that.
The way the update makes it sound, the Sprites allow for skills like you would see in other MMOs, which suddenly allows for a greater depth of strategy. It doesn't necessarily mean bosses will be easier, it just means that you can say, fight Vanaduke in a way that isn't "One person with Frost Bomb, Three people with Argent Peacemakers, Win Boss."
Let's face it, variety is kind of a hard thing to do in Spiral Knights as it presently stands, and if you don't have the right gear, bosses and Danger Missions are an exercise in frustration unless you're in the top percentage of SK Players. Sprites allows for some actual strategy and teamwork that goes beyond the limited amount that exists so far....or at least potentially do, based on what we've read.
Also, come on, let the difficulty be segregated. Shadow Lairs and Danger Missions do exist, after all. I'm sure more Danger Missions will come into play, and if there's a new major boss, you can bet there'll be a Shadow Lair version of it.
I know this is kind of a cop out answer, but if the game's become too easy for you, it might be best to take a break? Or maybe devise some self-imposed challenges to keep it interesting?
...Whew, that's a lot of words. I'm good at those!
Sprites use their skills when you want them to, via a key press.
Active skills? Are these spammable or will there be cooldown bars in my Spiral Knights?
I would also like to mention that the pets look adorable. Good show!
Well, good news is pet haters won't need to hate, considering they're not quite the same thing.
But...
I CALL CYBER-ELF.
