This may seem a bit off the wall, but I been playing SK since the day it hit steam. A bit of time has gone by for me and the one question on my mind still remains, what exactly are the knights? Now I know I am probably going to get some sort of flak for this question but hasn't anyone else been interested on that as well? I like looking into the backstory of a game and for SK the only thing that I cannot figure out. Are they robots? Just aliens? Humans to some extent?

And if they are from another planet, where is the rest of their race? Why are they not getting help? Just a few werid things on obersvation.

My beliefs and stuffs :P

I believe that the knights are unstable masses of conscious energy. Our specialized armors are the only things that keeps us from destroying half of Cradle. However, we are still living, thinking beings. This is why we never see a knight without armor.

I think the entire race is on Cradle, but some are still in a suspended sleep after the Crash. As for the planet... wasn't there a mission that said something about a Civil War on Isora? Who knows? Maybe Isora isn't inhabitable anymore.

Hmm, could be a very interesting possiblity. Personally I still lean towards sentient robots, like the strangers seem to be sentient robots as well... As for the civil war of Isora. I don't seem to recall that mentioned anywhere. Could try and look that up.

As for the skylark, according to backstory, its a name of a bird from their planet, and they used the ship to explroe the galaxy. Sounds like one of their main capital ships, however... There could be others.

I could be mistaken. It's very likely I'm mistaken, actually. I am mistaken quite a lot. XD

Anyway, yes, there could be others. Er... Don't laugh. This is only a theory: maybe the Skylark is not one ship, but a fleet. Does the backstory say anything against it? Maybe...?

Sentient robots is the most popular theory and for good reason. It does seem most likely. But if that's the case... who made us?

Well look at the Geth in Mass Effect, they were made by the Qairians I think about 2000 years before the games timeline, self replication is most likely. And it wouldn't be so much as who made us I want to know about, I just wanna figure out what the kinghts are. As for the skylark, every mention I saw of it basiclly said it was one large ship

Spiral knights are sentient

Spiral knights are sentient bio-machines, part organic and part cybernetic. They do not need oiling or other hardware maintenance. However, their suits are an integral part of their existence and they do not seem to be able to function or exist without them.

judging from:

beating heart on defeated knight countdown

knights being revved with energy that is kept in tanks.

Not being dependent on energy to move, talk, or take other actions.

Suits being interchangeable/customizable, but not entirely removable.

Yeah, I was thinking the same things, specially the beating energy heart for when your downed. And yes, you always are wearing some sort of armor, no matter what. Bio machines however is a interesting consept. I didn't think of that one.

coming to life

i thought we were suits of armor that some how gained consciousness and built a civilization.
we banned together against an evil threat, but it was too strong fro use ( too strong for our planet ). they stole our core for a power source, but we made it off world before it collapsed. we were on a large ship that held all of us. we found a planet and sent out a team to see if it was safe. that team was lost but but they reported back that it was safe before we lost connection. the enemy found us and they learned from our home world that the core of our planet has been creating a more powerful energy for centuries and that energy became aware of its self and attaching to metal and cloth ( our old planet gave birth to us ), like i said the enemy was coming after us, and used a fraction of the cores power to strike our ship, we escaped in pods.
find recon modules that the team left. right before the attack on the ship they sent a transmission saying they were too quick to say it was safe, there are monsters here but it is nothing we can't handle. after landing we kept finding modules, reports, and clues. we also learned that this new planet's core has similar properties of our old core, it gives us a limited amount of power, and we absorb it through the surface. all we have to do know is find the old team and hope the enemy doesn't come down here.

A mysterious alien race...

Personally, I think our knights are a mysterious alien race.
Highly advanced in technology and powered by a pure "substance" they call "energy".
Maybe the knights themselves are shapeless, and that's why they need their energy-powered armors.

I also believe that our knights don't really "die"; I think it's that their suits are critically damaged and need an immediate dose of extra energy to be functional again.

PFFFFF.

They're obviously organic.

Several item descriptions allude to them having hair, or can eat,

Kats also react violently to LIVING things.

AKA, we're (mostly) organic beings.

Also, the Almire Crusaders and that one Almarian Knight also are the same as us.

Google the origin of Vivi Ornitier from Final Fantasy IX.

The eyes of our knights together with their armor capable of collecting Mist energy is a homage to Vivi.

TL ; DR. Knights are probably engineered with Mist energy as an ingredient but they also gained conscious during the process. Their purpose is probably for space exploration. (Mechanical bodies are more suitable for inter-galactic traveling due to their resistance to cosmic radiation.)

"Vivi is a black mage created in Dali by Alexandria after Queen Brahne learns of this technology from Kuja. Vivi is a prototype black mage who managed to escape by falling out of the cargo ship and was later fished out of the Mist Ocean by a Qu named Quan. Quan raised Vivi out of the hope he would grow big enough for him to eat; however, after six months, Vivi was still as short as before."

If you look up Mist energy in SK, it's collected from the surrounding environment due to the energy source at the core of Cradle. The knights are probably able to do so because that's what they have been doing when they travel in space (park Skylark near a star, everyone onboard has a nice sunbath and move on to next destination).

That would make sense because well, organic bodies aren't very suitable for traveling in space. So it looks to me these knights are already well adapted for space traveling and so I won't be surprised their energy sources do not involve organic food. (They may still need them for repairing or growth though.)

Here is a description of the

Here is a description of the Vitasuit Plus: 'High-tech mail that provides the wearer with myriad medical boons, including bonus health, glossier hair, and fresher breath.' From the mention of breathing and having hair, we can assume that we are biological life to at least some extent.

In one section of Operation Crimson Hammer, Warmaster Seerus refers to knights as 'Infernal Iron assassins'. I don't know about you but it sounds like it's saying that our bodies are composed mainly of Iron like a robot. Either that or he is referring to our armour, although it would seem that not all of it is made out of Iron.

The actual answer is a great mystery; I'm leaning more towards the idea of us being biological life but it is quite possible that we are also artificial (completely or to an extent). The fact that we are also capable of using 'energy' makes this a rather complicated question to answer for definite.

I would say they're kind of like aliens with a similar shape of a human, don't believe me? Look at the hands of a wolver armor, you can see the fingers match the eyes, possibly aliens I have to say, because if we were robots, we wouldn't be taking so much damage from piercing, shadow, etc, so robot can be cleared out. A blue beating heart once you die, Aliens of course, Aliens do not need to have red blood, so possibly it's blue-ish, but the damage bars when you get hit, like you get hit by a normal attack, a red lego brick as I like to call them comes out of your character, therefore might be referred as blood, other than that I would say aliens

They are....

They are life forms that have been using magic (energy) for years that they no longer need the use of food or water for sustenance. The side effect to this changed their bodies black and they evolved to absorb energy from the cores of planets.

The Strangers need food and so they thought the Knights need also. That don't mean the Knights actually need them to live. They could still need them for purpose such as growth or repair. I'm more inclined to believe that they can operate with Mist energy alone which they can draw from any nearby energy sources like the Core.

I believe that they need food, as several things say.

I'm guessing that they don't eat ingame, because, there's no point ingame. Also, I thought why is there a campfire in the bright wolver dens despite us not needing heat? Same with Clockwork Tunnels.

Besides, the Strangers are more mechanical than us.

LIES.

Knights are more or so related to Zombies and Almarians.

Load of Bull? Look at their legs+ Alone in the dark and GitM.

Also, how can robot eat? We don't see any robots ingame eat.

Then, if you think about it, Gremlins COULDN'T build the CW by themselves, hinting of an higher power.

Just because they are machines...

If they are machines or bio-mechanical people dosn't mean they don't need to eat. In terms of our own organics we eat so our bodies gain energy, vitamins, etc from the food. Who said they weren't people at some point and turned in to cyborgs in a way. Maybe they are organics but with nanomachies that run the body now. or artifical organs and stuff *Shrugs*

And something for fun.... The lead artist does a comic called 3 panel soul and releases a new page every once in awhile. Here is something that was on the site http://threepanelsoul.com/2011/06/07/on-survival/ I honestly don't think this is canon at all but it's still pretty funny to say the least. This guy is awesome, look at his work. According to one of his posts he made practicly every single weapon/monster in the game and did the coding for them....
(Including this strip http://threepanelsoul.com/2011/04/11/on-ironclaw-menders/ Also the blog for that month http://threepanelsoul.com/2011/04/ ) Anyway...

That was all off topic. Still, we really need to get some more backstory on the knights themselves and not just the world they are interacting with.

I have a few theories.For

I have a few theories.

For starters, I think they're semi-organic robots. As in, they have a few organic functions, but they're primarily cybernetic.

As for why no one is coming to help...either:

A) Their entire race was on the skylark when it crashed. (or the rest of their race died out before the knights woke up and started to fix the ship)

B) Their civilization is so huge that no one knows the skylark crashed, or they assume that it's too costly to go down and fix it, leaving the knights stranded until they can fix it. The new knights are passers by who happen to crash on a planet they can't leave from (or they're AIMING for it, drawn by the promise of loot!)

Or...

C) And this is a huge conspiracy theory, but bear with me...

The knights never "crashed" onto Cradle. It's all a lie.

NO WAIT, HEAR ME OUT! I SWEAR THIS IS GOOD!

Imagine, if you will, that the Strangers built the Knights, as well as set up the arcade, and all the other useful stuff in haven, before making the knights, and sending a bunch up into orbit to come crashing down later. Then, as the knights "awoke", with their pre-programmed backstories about the crash, the Strangers directed them to go hunt for the Core, as well as sell them useful things to make a profit.

And how did they make the knights?
- How about...The knights...Are actually SNIPES that were (for lack of a better term) roboticized! Or just plain stuffed into armor that overrides their memories.

Why would they do this?
- Simple. The gremlins control the clockworks, and thus, the core. The Strangers want it, badly. So they made an army of knights to do so, and overrode the peaceful nature of the snipes locked within by making the war against the gremlins into a "game". HENCE, the Arcade. :o

Well? What do you thi-
