Groucho Glasses would indeed make it look more like a pet without losing the "but that's not a pet, that's a rock!" theme, so that seems like a good idea. They should be held on with tape, though, so as not to personify the rock too much by showing that it's capable of holding up the glasses by itself.
Edit: "no, not free to go," Alright, then pet rocks WILL be free to go.

Pet Rocks could be an extremely rare drop or something for show or to prove that you have a crap ton of luck.

Pet Rocks! They take four times the damage from water glops and brambles, in exchange for being able to use Rock Throw, Magnitude, and Selfdestruct.
And if you level them up enough, they evolve into Graveler!
