How many are there going to be?
9 types?
20 types?
40 bajillion types?
I hope they dont make the system too overly complicated.

If I had to guess, it would depend heavily on reception, as the devs admittedly don't have a set plan that they're following. (See Nick's Radio Sega interview)
I'd be fine with additional battle sprites being put into the game after the first few, provided that they are monetized correctly, and don't halt content from other sources. By "monetized correctly" I do mean that it'd be quite easy to stick them into those nifty promotional boxes and call it a day, but that the developers shouldn't do this. I don't think they will anyway. They could do reskins of them in boxes and I'd be fine with it, and they could place unspeakable food from planet krypton that levels the sprite quickly in boxes (as extras; not as a "main thing"), but no new sprites in boxes. I'd stay away from that. (See player's reactions towards Operation Crimson Hammer)
I want to say that three rings exhausted all their government-issued imagi-creation(Tm) dust and now they're just slouched over in an mindless daze, wondering what the hell they are supposed to do now. Just sprawled over their desks, the floor, hanging from the ceiling. Sort of looks like someone came in and stole their souls really.
And I just did.
Which of these three can learn earthquake?
Drakon is the closest, since it actually pounds the ground on its second ability!
Levitate ability, Flying types, and the move Magnet Rise*.
In any case, the devs'd make as many as they want.
We ned ah sprit tah doo stan1 staan1
I would personally be fine with just the 3, because the system doesnt need to be that complicated. Its battle sprites, not pets. Well, maybe pets.
One thing that concerns me is that, in the Test Server, the sprite you pick is yours for eternety, and you cant change it. If theres more than 3, how can you get them?
We should be able to summon these sprites at will. Maybe with a little capsule that we keep equipped and throw it when we need it. Also, there should be wild sprites that we can catch with these capsules, and when the core opens, out released some legendary sprites that can use judgement and stuff. Finally, there will be a sprite that can fly into space and we can use a pika-sprite to power the skylark to get us out of here. Then, after that, we can relax and drink some sprite.
In all seriousness though, I want to see a evil knight. A knight with their very own super powerful sprite. All the bosses in the game are giant. I want a small, quick boss that drops a master ball when I defeat him.
Ima be a spritemon master! Gotta catch them all! And force them to do my bidding!
Well we already have:
Drakon: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Bagon_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29 (In Red).
Seraphynx: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Mew_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29
Maskeraith: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Duskull_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29
12 types
Then 14 the Next Generation
Then 15 on the 6th Generation
@Grittle
Nintendo could announce yet another Pokémon type sometime before Gen 6 release.
And two posters in a row guess 649? Now we need to make all of those 649 battle sprites to be on the screen at the ssme time.
Like I care if my main move can't hit flying types. They're weak to almost everything else for christs sake.
The real question is when will the battle sprites be released? I thought it was the half of July?
My guesstimate is 649 at least. But I'm just an unruly old man gone mad, so don't pay no attention to me.
