I broke my shield and it refused to recharge past 50%! XD

I have no idea what caused it and sadly had no way to check what would happen if I tried to use it.

Judging by the screenshots, you were lagging with dat red bar.

Nah, it wasn't lag, that red bar is normal to me. The shield stayed that way for about 5 minutes, after that I got bored and went to the elevator :B
