What's in Development - September 2013

We’ve recently made some big, exciting changes to Spiral Knights. Now that the dust is beginning to settle, I’d like to take a moment and tell you about some of the other projects we have in store for SK.
Arcade Redux
After a great deal of evaluation we’ve decided to change the way the Arcade will work and the purpose it will serve to the SK community. After introducing missions, the Arcade has become a place of redundancy. It has also suffered from the recent sprite update, relying on mineral leftovers from the community.
Over several patches, we intend to transform the Arcade into the place it has always aspired to be:
- A sandbox-type experience where unexpected things can happen
- A place where players can farm materials and items in between missions
- A feature that gives players some degree of control over the experience
Modified Rank Mission Campaign
The Rank Mission campaign is going to be receiving an update that continues the story of the Artifact and introduces a new primary antagonist for the Spiral Knights. The framework for this story will allow us to further expand Rank Missions post-Vanguard.
New Tier 3 Boss
A new mission arc will be incorporated following the events of the Firestorm Citadel that will include a new boss monster for players to challenge.
Challenge Mode
In addition to the exciting features we have planned for the Arcade and Rank Missions, we're busy working on an all-new 'challenge mode' that will allow players to work as a team in cooperative scenarios and compete with other teams for a high score. Challenge mode will also feature rewards for those that really excel.
More to Come!
This isn't all that we have in store for you, it's just all we can talk about right now. Many more exciting features are on the way! Keep an eye out here on the Spiral Knights forums for details on the above projects, and more.
So as always, thanks for playing Spiral Knights!

Sounds great, I look forward to it all

I'm crying, i was waiting for torto since istarted to play.

Listening to more player feedback? A new boss? More lore?! Something that looks like it'll be the MvM of Spiral Knights?!
YES. So do you have any approximate dates on these updates?

New tier 3 boss? Challenge mode? Arcade brought back into relevance? I came back to SK at just the right time.
Wow. I'm impressed. I guess it is time to start spending $$$ again.

So when will you harvest the results of that gear balance survey? :3

THANK YOU so much for attempting to fix the arcade, I was so sick of Freeze...

ERMERGERG!!
Devs interacting with us and explaining something!

Certainly exciting, but I'd like it if you paid more attention to balancing gear, enemies, and Sprites.
Challenge Mode could be a nice way to add "real" difficulty, or to introduce harder enemies. Maybe it's where we'll get the Gram and frozen sword?

Since you are planning to have the Artifact feature into the continued storyline, is there any chance that Knights created before the Rescue Camp updates will ever be able to replay those missions? It's kind of a bummer that the only way I'll get to see that content is if I create another Knight just for the sake of doing so.

/cheer
Now, I have a little curious Snipe here who wants to know something. I'll let him (her?) have the keyboard.
Are (1)minerals going to remain as a resource for the Arcade, (2)become pure Sprite food, (3)become pure Arcade materials, or (4)get removed from the game altogether? Or is it too early to tell?
Ok...well I'm sorta wondering the same thing... xD

Question on the new boss
Will it include a Shadow Lair version and will we see new Shadow Lair gear from it?

FINALLY, A THING THAT MEANS THINGS TO ME!
...Now where's that second T1 boss, Nick?

A feature that gives players some degree of control over the experience
I'm assuming when Nick says this he means if minerals aren't going to be completely revamped/removed, they're going to work on a more personal scale: aka the level theme is determined not by what the other several thousand minerals deposited are, but what you've deposited.

My reaction to this was hyperventilating and extreme excitement, all of which sounded like this:
"What's this?..... HUHUEHUEHUEHUEHEUH pffffffft!"
We love ya' Nick! ...But not in that way.

NEW BOSS, NEW MISSIONS, FIXED ARCADE, NEW MODE AND MUCH MORE!
(IF THE BOSS IS A FIEND I WOULD BE ANGRY OR IS IT A SUPER CHARGED TORTODRONE?).
STILL SOME MISSIONS TO BE TURNED TO GOLD THOUGH
MISSIONS ARE 1-2 "The Ancient generator", 1-4 "Crossing the Chasm" 2-1 "A visit to the lab" and finally 2-3 "An eternal bond".

Thank you so much Nick for now taking feedback from the community, good luck reworking the Arcade!

OOO's > Microsoft & Activision & any other game company.
If there was only 1 game that I could play, it would be Spiral Knights.

now to wonder how long will these planned updates take.... since the battle sprite one took quite a while

I have to throw my love at the screen for OOO not only because this patch sounds sweet, but because it's one of the few times I've seen players go "I LOVE YOU GUIES SO MACH" in a patch note thread.
'...Now where's that second T1 boss, Nick?'
IMO I'd rather have 3 T3 bosses, 2 T2 and 1 T1 than 2 bosses for each strata. NOT TO IMPLY OOO NEEDS TO DO ANYTHING MORE THAN THEY ALREADY ARE.

Sounds like really exciting year to come for endgame players, I just really hope that with all that we'll see some bug fixes and gear balancing patches since some of these can ruin fun of playing and experimenting with new toys. I think I'm not the only one who thought about taking a break and no doubt this announcement will either keep us playing or make the comeback much, much better. You got our attention and maybe it'd be good idea to update the site (media) and try to get other people's attention too with some advertising?

Interesting. Nice to see that we have actual content in development instead of lame stuff that just makes the knight more powerful..
Hopefully it won't take a year.

...awesomesauce. Reworking the arcade is perfect, since missions are redundant after becoming Vanguard. :O
I've always done Arcade since it became completely free, and I have to admit the monotony of the runs nearly got to me.
Can't wait! :D

It all sounds great!
I'm excited!
I want it here nao!1!!
/me runs around in circles, bursting with excitement{*}. :)
{*} And a surplus of exclamation marks. ;P

Sounds cool. The one thing i'm mostly hoping for is extra rewards for missions completed in elite mode, because i just finished all of them today. c:
(except the ones that aren't repeatable)

This sounds really cool!! *hypehype*
But this is something I've been wondering for a while: you guys keep on adding content, content worth of achievements, but the achievements we have now are old and outdated =x (also with sprites now, the mineral ones are the worst).
So I was wondering if there was gonna change something there or not.
I've been waiting for the Post-Vanaduke missions and always wondered about what goes into the story. Finally, I see some progress in that category. Nice job, 3Rings.
Also, maybe there could be an addition of a new Tier and new equipment.
Even more crazy, the Skylark finally being built and moving onto new worlds? Possibly more action on the surface of Cradle.
And there definitely has to be more ways to get minerals for the Sprites like the Prize Wheel, rewards through the Coliseum, or a new mechanic for Sprite food
if they will be to improving sk, because then not improve unique variant

OMG! this update is gonna be amazing! a new boss !?! is there going to be an SL version of it? and finally there are co-op puzzles (if that's what I think challenge mode is). not to mention more storyline antagonists. I think everyone can agree that more lore to the game is a good thing.
Everyone's so excited about fixing the arcade.
And I'm just sitting here waiting for a 4 or 5 star version of the swiftstrike buckler..

Swifty can stay 3*. If it were actually somewhat resilient, nobody except bombers would use anything else! 3*-5* Wrench Wand, though. Wrench Want.
Man, between this and the new TF2 trading thing (you can make trade offers while the other person is AFK! Spam might be possible, but so are far easier trades), there's just been so many things online today that are made of win.

As elated as I am, let's remember to be a bit guarded. Remember the Iron Slug buff promise? It fell through because the tools weren't yet available to change the Iron Slug to Nick's specs (or so I've heard). I'm told it's still on the todo list. So don't look at the OP as a promise; rather, look at it as a goal to be achieved. They are aiming for it, but don't whine too loudly if they miss. Because sometimes, stuff happens.
That said, I can hardly wait to see implemented what the SK team has in store for us!

I like where this is going, but please don't make us engame players go through the experience in a really weird and unproductive way. I know you mean well, but try to make sure you leave no loose ends.
Anyways, WOOT, this is gonna become the SK we always wanted(some of us at least).
Inb4 admins wont fix bugs, balance op-up stuff once agai

O___O...
R-r-rank... m-missions... Post... V-vanguard!?!?
/me has a heart attack and falls over.
/hug Nick

''The Rank Mission campaign is going to be receiving an update that continues the story of the Artifact''
Artifact? What's that? Can I eat it? :V
You guys should make a Core opening DLC. That would truly be amazing for the people that have played since the game came out!
