Down load the Spiral Knights Game directly from the webpage, sync your account to your facebook, and then use the SK you just downloaded and log on using your facebook, viola, when Steam lets you down there is a solution.
Link your steam account to your facebook, have facebook openn in the browser when you open non steam spiral knights click the facebook button to log on as a steam knight
This worked for me hopefully it will help others.

This might work actually. Downloading the standalone and logging in through facebook makes it log in to the account that you're logged in to the website. Even if it's your steam account. Downloading the standalone now, hoping it works.
Ergo, you don't actually need facebook for this to work. But I dunno if it works yet.
@Pschodestroyer: I see. That makes sense. But I'm pretty sure a viola is a musical instrument too that's basically a bigger violin. Or maybe the strings are different. I don't know the difference but I know they are different in some way.

Just to confirm this method works. And no, you do not need to a facebook account. You just need to be logged into this website, and then click on the facebook button on the standalone client.

Everyone speaks of this standalone client as if the download link were in flashing text on every page.
It isn't.
The play link wants to launch steam for me.
Where does one download the standalone client?

Anyway I just finished patching my old pre-Steam standalone version of SK, hit the Facebook login button on it and got the error message "This account has been converted to Steam. Select Use Steam Account to log on." Standalone SK doesn't even have the Steam Account login option.
If you logout of the web site you will also get the stand alone installer to download, so do this first before logging on using steam to the web site, also get it to install an icon on your desktop, to make sure you run the right one.
if you click on it and then press "facebook" it does use the browser to sign in, the only problem with it is, if you click the "energy" tab, the client crashes, otherwise everything works fine (for me atleast).
Viola? I sincerely hope you were trolling. I can't believe nobody picked up that it was a misspell of Voila. See Skrumm's response above.
Either way - instead of linking my account to facebook and all the other ridiculous hoops, I'd rather just wait for the server restart which I'm sure is coming in the next 15-20 mins.

As Don has already said, you dont need a facebook account. I dont have one. The facebook button simply logs into whatever forum account is logged on. Thanks for the help Zajarism, it worked perfectly.

OMG, Thank you Zajarism for the idea and starting this thread and THANK YOU Donzrael for stopping from dealing with facebook.
To clarify the Facebook sign it button will just look to see if you are signed into SK in your browser, not just facebook. So, signing into the SK website with your steam account works.
Even better then being able to play tonight. I can now play my Steam SK account without steam running in the background!

My internet is a complete fail so its gona take me 2 hours.
Ya gotta click the Facebook button, then get forwarded to the SK site. If you've logged into the forums with your Steam acct, it'll automatically authorize it. I'm too bloody lazy to log out of the forums, then boot the SK client back up to see what happens otherwise. All I know is that it works for me.
As for the issue of not wanting to d/l the client, well, download it anyway and keep it on hand for next time.
