Graphics problems: monster/player textures
All the graphics are displaying fine for me except for monsters, vendors' bodies, player/NPC bodies (heads and weapons are fine), those little bird thingies in Haven, and explosive boxes. All appear as a flat colour, which varies between white, blue and brown depending on what level i'm on.
I've tried updating java and fiddling with my graphics card settings but no dice.
Any ideas what could be causing this and how i could fix it? It's such a beautiful game and I hate to be missing parts of it.
Windows XP Pro SP2
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600
Java version 6 update 21
edit: also the 'missing' graphics display fine in other places, such as the character/equipment screen and the NPC picture in the bottom left corner during dialogue.
Uninstalled java and my graphics driver, let windows install my graphics card. Went to download page for spiral knights, let it install java. Now have java version 6 update 20.
It starts the game, and everything that was a flat colour before is now INVISIBLE. Well, except I can see explosive blocks properly now. Jellys are also appearing, but they look like tiny hovering ice cream cones. I can see a single green band on chameleons backs.
The character loadout screen and vendor dialogue portraits now have invisible bodies; they weren't affected by the glitch before.
Javaw.exe still closes immediately when i try to start the game from the desktop shortcut.

I suspect the graphics driver is your primary concern here. You'll want to head over to your laptop manufacturer to find the latest drivers for your model. Try the latest and see if that works. If it didn't then you may also consider trying an older one in case the newest has issues.
Also try to switch between windowed and full screen modes to see if those make a difference for the various drivers.
As for the desktop client not starting at all, try and uninstall it completely first, then reinstall it again and see if that alone does it.
Glad to see i'm not the only one with this problem. This thread has been helpful.
I have the same graphical issue of textures not displaying properly with the downloaded version of the client.
Windows XP SP2
Radeon HD 3850

I added a step by step -walk through for Technical issues- such as those you mention here. Head over and read through it and see if it solves your problems.
Fixed using the latest drivers.
I'm kind of surprised that worked, since when I played during the previous preview event, things looked fine.
Finally found where i could download some older drivers from my laptop manufacturer - 4 of them. (before i had only tried their latest one, and other drivers from other sites, then resorted to using a program to modify desktop drivers to run on a laptop... :S )
Tried them all one by one; First one didn't work at all, and my computer was running at 640x480 and 4 bit colour when I restarted. I laughed. Next two made everything invisible again. But the last one, my final hope: Success! Finally! Yaaaaay.
OMG THESE MONSTERS ARE ALL SO CUUUUUUUTE! :3

If you mates ended up using older drivers because the newer drivers didn't work for you, then please do mention that here and list the video card you have. That would be interesting information for others in the same situation. And to look into why newest ones didn't work.
my setup:
HP Compaq 8510p
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600
Driver version: 8.453.1.2000
Driver date: 27/03/2008
I also Have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 and have this problem. I'm guessing thats what's wrong
I just saw this thread after posting in the bug report forum! This sounds like my problem, but mine is intermittent, not all the time (as in it sometimes displays the textures and stuff fine, and then I will change levels or scenes and it the problem comes back).
I'm using a Toshiba Satellite laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium SP2
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 (driver is up to date, and I'm scared about messing with it/installing older drivers in case it makes other programs stop working properly :S)
Java 6.0.210.7
I think I'll just persevere and enjoy the half the time when it loads, and just fight chocolate or custard cubes instead of jelly on the times when it doesn't! hehe

Before downloading and installing SK, I installed the newest Java. I then updated the driver using the device manager (because it seems this would be the average player's first step) rather than going to NVIDIA's site.
I seem to be having the same issue as Adrielle. Intermittently I'm seeing black shapes in place of images like banners, spikes, and switches. It's as if the banner/switch/spikes are now a solid black. The colors also seem a bit off, though I'm not sure I can describe exactly how. After going to NVIDIA's site and installing their newest driver, I'm still having this same problem. In fact, I think it's actually worse because the black images are now flickering.
I'll be experimenting with older drivers and settings, but I wanted to mention this since you were asking for feedback.
My current system:
Windows 7 64 bit
HP HPE-480t
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 - 1 GBs dedicated memory (Version: 8.17.12.6099 Date: 10/16/20010)
Java version 6 update 22

Just an update: I am still having this issue - although, it happens less often now. It would be nice to have a fix! =)

Okay so this problem is still here, and I've been juggling java versions and graphics driver versions ever since, and now i have a new problem: the game just won't start.
javaw.exe appears in the task manager list for about a second and then just disappears.
If I delete something, the installer comes up, reinstalls the missing files, and then tries to run the game, and the same thing happens.
I can get around it: if I open the website where you go to download the game, that makes it run!
What on earth is wrong with my computer.
