Token confusion

I played below Haven with 2 other people. I think we were all under the assumption that we started out with 0 tokens. However once we got to moorcraft the other 2 were able to carry on and I wasn't, causing instant confusion. After checking they had all the tokens they needed to access all the tiers. However at that point I only had 5 tier 2 and 6 tier 3 tokens. According to Boswick players should have tokens already from what they've done in the past prior to the update. I play every single day pretty much though. I have 44 invitations. The other 2 players only have around 20 invitations to put things into perspective.

So I don't know what is going on or how this is working.

Edit: Apparently they've used invitations and would have around 35 or something if they didn't use them. Still I don't see why I have barely any tokens.

The token tracking has only

The token tracking has only been in since the last update (a week ago). So that would be why you may not have as many tokens as you would think. Also, if you were mostly doing sub Emberlight runs, you wouldn't be generating the tier 1 & 2 tokens necessary to get the tier passes.

Hm

Where does it say how many tokens you have?

Go to your character window,

Go to your character window, then click Progress, then look at the Clockwork Tier Clearance row. Hover your mouse over one of the circles and it will tell you.

As a side note I think gate tier passes are a bad idea because it will just encourage people to play the same gate over and over.

Huh, I have over 30 invits

Hmmm, I have 30 invits and the game tells me all I have is 17 token or whatever on tier 3.

I think it's time to call in the bs..... plus what's with the gate specific restrictions?

Want me to pour in a bit more pocket change there, huh?

Haha

Thing is, the tokens are earned for completing level in a tier, and we have been winning them for a few weeks only.
So since most people has been doing only Ember runs, we are short on tokens.

No idea about the gate things though.

I've got full tokens

I've got full tokens unlocked, and I've managed to unlock Amber Falcon down to tier 3. I don't see how invites and tokens are linked at all tho.

Clockwork Tier vs. Gate Tier

To be honest, I feel silly for not being able to figure this out on my own, but I really can't. Maybe I'm missing something or maybe it's sleep deprivation, but I'm not sure I understand the point of "Clockwork Tier Clearance" alongside "Gate Tier Passes".

What's the point? Is Clockwork Tier Clearance just so I don't have to chat with the Wardens in Moorcroft and Emberlight now that I've chatted with them once each? Because if so, it wasn't clear to me and I don't think it's well explained in the game itself. Even the announcement about it all didn't give this sort of specific info about Clockwork Tier Clearances and needing to earn passage in each gate individually.

I'd be really happy to be wrong, but right now the best I can come up with is to have the friends I play with each clear a different gate and then we can piggyback off each other. Seems like an Energy sink to me, and I don't have the CE to waste on grinding levels that give me next to nothing.

I like the concept, but the implementation right now seems awkwardly complicated and it also forces some truly boring grinding and expense of Energy if we've got to go through the upper levels of each gate individually.

Yep

The general tokens are fine, since they are only there to make sure you do at least 3 Haven runs and 4 Moor runs or something like that, so they shouldn't be a problem to new players.
They are a little annoying to us since we have been playing for a while.
They also stop people with bad gear to attempt deeper gates and be a burden to their party.

Also I've noticed many people had no idea what was going on with this update, maybe the patch notes should be displayed on the login screen of the client or something.

I think gate passes are a terrible idea though. What's the point of having to play Tier 1 / 2 for every gate, when they don't give you any heat or crowns, and aren't even a challenge since your armor makes you take almost no damage?

You do get heat, at least

You do get heat, at least below Moorcroft I managed to level up my Sentenza last night from heat level 7 to 10. But it's no challenge, not even the 3rd arena fight before you reach Emberlight. Forcing everyone to complete the lower levels of any gate they want to play seems quite pointless...

Hm yea, that basically means

Hm yea, that basically means that for every new gate we'll have to go through tier 1-3 again before we can play what we want? I hope not atleast, else I'm wondering who actually came up with that idea.

I think the token system only

I think the token system only counts complete runs. That means if you joined late or quit early, it doesn't count. I think the dude in Moorcraft says that. So if you are trying to do the math, make sure to take that into account.

I don't mind having to earn

I don't mind having to earn access to tier 2 and tier 3 (natural progression, etc, etc), but if I have to do it for every gate I'm going to go insane.

As always we will be

As always we will be monitoring player feedback and observing behaviors with this new feature. Our goal with gate passes is to give individual players a greater sense of progression with each chunk of new content as well as intermix new and advanced players. We will ultimately move in a direction that is best for all players, like continuing to develop earlier tiers to be rewarding for advanced players.

So please be patient and please give us helpful feedback. We very much appreciate your time and enthusiasm for Spiral Knights during this Preview Event.

Since you are more looking

Since you are more looking into the area of making lower tiers more rewarding:

I think you'll need to find some way to ensure that playing right below Haven is just as hard, and earns just as much compared to levels below Emberlight. Right now it's way too easy, and it earns not even enough for us to actually stop and kill the monsters rather than rush through it. Right now, you've created a system where difficulty and tier progression is based on depth. Now you say you'd like to change all of that, and make it so lower tiers are just as worth it for high-end players compared to the deepest levels? I think you've found quite a big design problem here then.
