I've had enough times in RJP to tell you of how ridiculous some things are in there.
Ever had a time when a Lumber hits a slime and it cannonballs towards you with a 360 degree no scope attack? Yeah. That will happen.
Ever had a time when a mini cube decides to be a snowball and hit you while you concentrate on taking down a group of enemies? Yes. And on my last pip.
Ever had a time when a time when the game says, "Curse you. You're dead." and lags you until you come back with your corpse across the room piled by jellies? Yes.
Ever had a time when you realize stun is a buff and will ice you sideways? Yes.
Ever had a time when you're using a slow sword while stunned and you stand there for 4 seconds unable to switch weapons while getting wailed upon?
Very yes so.

^^^^^^
Perfectly good things to rant about. Yes. Very.

I am deeply offended.

Anyway, it sounds like you mostly need to practice. Improvement can in short be divided into three aspects: what bad things happen, why bad things happen, and how to prevent bad things from happening. You have very much succeeded in the first part, but you try to put the blame elsewhere, even though you can work agianst these things. Try figuring out ways to handle these problems, try those methods out, and see if it works.

Agree with Krakob here

Doesn't sound like the game's fault. If you're playing alone, what you need is practice and to keep your eyes open.

Also, I'm guessing you've taken the offense over defense route. That is suggested by many players, but you need to remember that your gear is only as good as you can make it be. If you're wearing dusker armor, you will take more hits from jellies but need to steer clear of lumbers.

And a quick tip that I see many players do is just click as fast as possible when an enemy is in range. This causes the enemies to turn towards you, and attack you. If you walk in front of a lumber, you should not be attacking it, as that is where it will attack from.

Lumbers are only trouble if you try to attack them head on, a better plan is to gun them down or melt them with a Fiery vaporizer line bomb. I lol when I get hit with a lumber smash, I've recently been using plate mail sets and I only take a second or two of stun, granted I have to be a bit more careful when going offensive but gunning down enemies and hiding behind your shield to wait for a good counter attack moment is fun.

All you really need to do is keep your eyes peeled for threats and remember it is much safer to counter attack than to attack (you will need to learn this lesson for FSC).

  1. Enemy attacks
  2. You move out of the way
  3. You attack while enemy is in state of cooldown
  4. Repeat
