What are utility weapons? I read someone call the cautery blade and winmillion a utility weapon, but what IS a utility weapon? Also how do u add a picture to your account?

Utility: This is a vague term, but basically it applies to anything but doing damage: spreading status, making a vortex, breaking blocks, etc. I would not call Cautery Sword or Winmillion a utility weapon.

A utility weapon is basically a weapon that you get for something other than damage. For example, a Shivermist Buster is meant to freeze large crowds of enemies. Its damage is negligible, and most people don't even bother using to kill anything.

Winmillion is kind of a utility weapon but mostly just a garbage weapon. Despite being awful, there is a case to be made for using it as a "finisher". It can deal a moderate amount of damage at a range fairly quickly while pushing its target and the wielder out of the way, which can be useful when dishing out lower amounts of damage (typically with say, an autogun) is hard. Since this isn't damage per second/safety, it's utility.

This isn't to say that winmillion is good or worth using though- just that it has a legitimate (but rare) use that involves utility. There are better items (namely tortofists) that chase enemies down, and most items can fulfill winmillion's function on their own right to the point of making winmillion trash tier, even if they perform worse overall.

I'd say weapons can be divided into three categories, which don't quite agree with above posters:

  • Damage: weapons that are primarily used to deal high damage, such as Acheron and Dark Briar Barrage
  • Utility: weapons that provide a form of utility which makes your fighting easier, but not because they deal high damage or because they allow you to manage enemies easier, such as Venom Veiler, Antiguas (low damage, but you can use them very easily while on the move and to hit switches and such), et cetera.
  • Control: weapons which alter where enemies are or how they move, such as Sudaruska (high knockback) and Shivermist Buster.

Of course, a lot of these overlap. Sudaruska can do very high damage, for example. Dark Briar Barrage provides excellent control vs Beasts and Gremlins thanks to knockdown.

The difference between what I've said and others have said is that I make a difference between utility and control whereas the others don't. If someone says utility weapons, they might as well be thinking like Bopp but it's all a matter of context.

I think I said that....

Cautery Blade offers more damage against fiends than your 3 star Nightblade. Helpful in the RJP for early players who want to deal high damage to the Jelly and Silkwings that spawn in that level. If it had a 5 star line I would definitely get one, since it doesn't the Nightblade is better in the long run.

The Winmillion offers a quick ranged attack for pure sword users so they don't have to run around looking for a pot or charge a DA. It lets then get that sword damage boost from wolver lines along with the defense perks of that line, especially good in places where using Chaos is a deathwish.

Would you really have people craft the cautery blade for just that one run? Instead of say, an elemental gun + nightblade? The same goes for winmillion, really... winmillion offers such a poor ranged option for hitting switches. Just bring a gun, it'll probably out damage winmillion anyway.

If it had the potential to be a 5 star weapon then it could find some use (especially if that line beats out the Nightblade line VS slimes), ATM the nightblade is superior in the long run.

And besides you have to admit it would look pretty cool.

a tall order

You're planning this 5-star cautery sword to be more powerful against slimes than Acheron? The most notoriously overpowered sword in the game, used against one of its vulnerable monster families?

I meant this part-

Helpful in the RJP for early players who want to deal high damage to the Jelly and Silkwings that spawn in that level.

Which has nothing to do with it getting a 5*. I mean you just said that players could consider it for the silkwings.. which I mean I guess is technically true that it'd deal more than nightblade on that one enemy, but come on- http://xkcd.com/1475/.

Really though, a 5* cautery would be like cold iron vanquisher: Brandish + Slime edition... except instead of comparing itself to leviathan blade and celestial sabre which at least aren't that much better, it would have to compete with acheron (and combuster, and voltedge, and glacius)... Acheron has mastered iron tail without a tail, and do you know what that means? That it has split normal/shadow, and will therefore always have a higher amount of base damage. It wouldn't stand a chance in tier 3, where damage boosts are abundant. It'd have some loadouts for it, but if I had to hazard a guess I'd say that it'd come across to most players as incredibly underwhelming and not worth looking into.

The only reason I don't think that acheron is OP is because of the recent gun patch. It's good, but is it better than those new iron slugs, improved blitz needles, the usual assortment of alchemers, what have you? Say what you'd like but I'd call it balanced with those. At least you have to approach them to deal damage with it.

It's just my opinion that specialist gear SHOULD always beat out non-specialist gear. That doesn't mean it would happen.

I would be fine if SK suddenly decided that Valkyrie set should be the best set for beating fiends (even better that BK set).

I agree with that general philosophy. And with your pessimism about its happening. Cheers.
