This shield has maximum defense agaisnt SLEEP. Which weapon(s)/enemies deal sleep? Is this shield worth it?

Slooms inflict sleep, but they were removed from the game a while.
Currently there aren't any enemies that inflict sleep so it's useless.

The only thing the Royal Jelly Shield has going for it is its higher Piercing defense than Normal, which means it might block an extra pure piercing attack than Barbarous Thorn Shield. But, BTS's offensive bonus will probably be far more useful. Ironmight Plate Shield is likely better if you want a piercing/stun resistant shield, although it isn't that useful either (Lichens don't do their stun attack that quickly or often).

So no, it isn't worth it.

Get a Savage Tortoise.....

BOTH of it's status resists are in game and it has the same pierce resist.

Flowchart gave a good answer. I would definitely get Barbarous Thorn Shield over any other piercing shield, even if I didn't use any swords. (Why? Just because someday I might use some swords.)
