Well I've been playing spiral knights for quite a while now, and I am finally building up a shield, and i decided to go with the plate shield serries, and I saw that it branched off into two different shield types, the ironmight shield and the volcanic plate shield. I've been leaning towards the volcanic plate shield, but I just wanted some extra opinions on this matter.

common question

I wouldn't get either one. While you wait for other responses, you might try searching Google for ironmight volcanic plate site:forums.spiralknights.com, to read many threads about this question. Cheers.

Both are pretty decent shields that offer good defense in any situation. Granted there are many shields that do better in more specific situations but if you want one shield to protect you get a plate shield.

Most people prefer to run FSC for CR and rarities so the VPS (volcanic plate shield) is quite viable there. It offers fire resist to the slags, rocket pup, and red Rovers, and it's normal defense and stun offer protection from Trojan attacks. Even better it offers heavy resistance to Vanaduke's Mace swing attack. The downside is the lack of type defense which means any enemy not dealing normal damage will take a fair chunk out of it.

The IPS (Ironmight plate shield) is also quite nice. It offers the same solid normal and stun resist but instead of a second status resist you get a pierce resistance. This shield is better suited for handling beasts and jellies. With it's good defense it can handle those enemies easy and offers a good defense to random enemies that pop up along side them.

There are also 2 other plate shields. The Ancient Plate shield (A vanaduke token reward item) and the Grand Tortoise. Both of these have the same amount of normal defense (so far this hasn't been confirmed but it is likely) and a stun resist. These shields have a massive normal defense bar, it actually has more than the bars show and can tank most hits well.

In order from greatest effect to least effect on shield durability:

1. Status resistance- if you don't have a status resist, your shield will take huge damage from them. If you do, you take none.
2. Correct damage resistance- i.e. shadow vs shadow, normal vs normal
3. Shield health- omega shell always wins if you can't do either of the above consistently
4. Amount of damage resistance- i.e. more shadow vs shadow as opposed to less

The best set of shields for general use would be two that cover all of the statuses, such as dread skelly and crest of almire, or dread skelly and owlite. The plate shields are rather low in the status and specialized damage departments, making them more niche than the above general use shields that fit together like a jigsaw puzzle.

Their saving grace is that they do have important areas to use their niche- firestorm citadel, jelly king, and dreams and nightmares. FSC features tons of normal damage enemies like Vanaduke, trojans, as well as a good many fiery half normal enemies, like slags. Add in stun and volcanic plate shield becomes one of the better fits.

Dreams and Nightmares features primarily normal damage and split normal/special, but also spinning slimes that deal poison + pure piercing. While the savage tortoise shield guards against this particular area slightly better, ironmight lacks a decrease in movement speed and can provide better cover overall against the non-slime portions of the area.

If you don't need a near-perfect shield for either of the above two scenarios and aren't looking to just collect shields for fun, then you might want to just forgo plate shields altogether and go for more well-rounded options.. and of course, if you want the most well rounded shield you should be going for omega shell.

Volcanic

The volcanic can take a vana mace attack straight on and barely be up and most of vanas attacks are normal dmg, plus it looks cool.
