Simply put, the game has been "dying" since like 2012. I hesitate to pronounce the game dead because you can still find people to play with. That's not going to change for years at this rate.

As for updates, we're in a fuzzy spot at the moment. Relatively recently, Spiral Knights was transferred from OOO to Grey Havens, which resulted in a lot of back-end troubles. That said, you can see a definite change in quality of promos since the transfer. Furthermore, supposedly a lot of the back end work has been finished, but we haven't seen anything major yet, beyond arguably new inspect feature being added to boxes (which is quite neat IMO). In addition, Grey Havens is like 6 people working on two MMOs, who recently pushed a big update for Puzzle Pirates.

So in short, SK is now in the hands of people who want to improve the game, but are likely lacking resources. Personally I'm optimistic, but there are a lot of people who aren't.

you can still play

The game is alive. You can play. It is fun. Someday you won't be able to play anymore. As Traevelliath said, people have been predicting it for years. My advice is to enjoy this wonderful game while you can.

.

The game doesn't seem to be getting any more content updates.... but from 2011 when you left off there has been more than enough added to make for a fun playthrough

No, devs just lack of resource to add more content.

Game is alive but devs simply don't want to get risk unfortunately but they still care about game with some contents. :)

No

There always seems to be a few players lurking around, I wouldn't say it's dead :)

Staying Alive

The game is still alive and will continue to remain that way if new players like you keep joining and playing. And yes, the devs still update the game.

Fuck

Don't play this game. It's dead as fuck. The devs don't give a fuck about this shitty game.

Spiral Knights is on a limbo

It's not dead, but it's not fully alive.
There's not that many updates lately (to not say there's next to none), but the community it's still up and trying to make the game feel as alive as it can be.
So basically, yes, but actually, no.

The game hit its 10th anniversary just last March 2021.
I joined the game early 2012 when Nick would visit the Haven as an NPC disguise.
It was great - the guild system made teaming up with friends fun, the guild hall added a way for you to customize a place the said teaming would make you feel like you belong to. The new missions were amazingly challenging back then, but at least it would win you the Warmaster Rocket Hammer when you finish it. That DLC was gifted to me by my Guild "Dies Irae" founder, Dwoiwode.
I met a lot of good and bad people along the way, even had 4000+ hours of gameplay shown on my Steam account for this game.

It was around early 2015 when I started to become inactive, mostly due to lacking updates - that was probably after Nick decided to leave back in 2014. I would come back occasionally to find that most of the new stuff being added were... cosmetics. I was not really a fan of that but it is a nice addition for people that wanted more options to customize their character.

The gameplay consisted of repetitive grinding, it felt repetitive if you were mostly alone on those days I would come back. I mean I've finished all the missions and my Prestige rank was already Vanguard for the longest time. Prestige Missions has not had anything new besides the seasonal changes but that means nothing new is added. Lockdown and Blast Network (PVP) used to be extremely active, it was a get-away when the grinding got boring circa 2013 to 2015 - but I suppose the waning amount of dedicated players also killed it.

Overall, it is a hack-and-slash game with plenty of grind elements - present with a much much smaller community of players keeping it alive, I suppose.
