Since a few days ago SK has started up and then closed down after a few seconds.
I tried verifying the game files and re-installing. No success.
In need of assistance

I start it with steam.

OS is vista.
No error messages pop up. A window appears saying "Preparing to launch Spiral Knights..." Like always.
Then I go from in-game to online. It just closes with no warning. I can't launch SK but for some reason I can launch SK preview.

Check the SK folder and
Check the SK folder and you'll probably find a bunch of hs_errPID####.log files. You could also try removing SK, then deleting the rest of the folder contents before reinstalling.

Looks like 3rd re-install is the charm!
It works now!
Update your drivers. Update java. That's all I can say without more details.
