I vote Halo in this particular battle because I can actually see it had developed over time.
Not necessarily the best though.

Actually a mecha-RPG had the first whack at FPS, but they didn't get much past 40,000 copies sold on the SNES (almost all of them in Japan, 5k in US). Likely because their controller contained 20 different buttons/functions and the game itself was known to burn the console up a tad. Can't recall the name right now but one of my friends used to have the game.
Doom is the first that didn't burn things physically/ get low sales due to better marketing and of course... 'lovely graphics' at the time. It was a mature game for a reason, and don't think the blood and violence was all there was.

I don't like either. If I had to choose, I would go with Halo.
I prefer my video games with a massive helping of unrealistic fun. I play video games to ESCAPE reality, not emulate it. It's far more fun to shoot a rocket at your feet and fly hundreds of feet in the air then turn into a fine red mist. Then games like Tf2 said "Oh... So you like to rocket jump? Alright! Here is everything you need to do it!"

Cod and halo are the same level
In my opinion , Halo and Cod are both really good games , and each have their ups and downs
Halo is a more easier game to play , as you have both a health bar and a shield bar than regens , but , in Cod you only have a health bar that rengens , making halo kind of easier and Cod better for people who are too pro for halo , Cod also has more cover based battles ,and a larger amount of guns , bigger battles , but halo has a nice storyline , zombies , space fighting , forge , and kinda better graphics .
So , im not trying to say which game is better , im just trying to say , halo lovers love halo and Cod lovers love Cod , and people who leave both love both .

I think Halo and CoD are too different from each other in terms of gameplay to be compared fairly. It'd be like comparing TF2 and Battlefield.
