Explain how Aegis is better
Explain how Aegis is better than a Royal Jelly Shield.
All Aegis is, is a barbarous thorn shield minus the sword damage bonus...
Ironmight has beefy normal defense, and stun resistance.
Royal Jelly has the most piercing defense, and stun and sleep (slooms).
How is Aegis the best in the game? I would like to know if I am missing something.

Aegis sucks, even if the only sword I owned was a proto sword I'd still use BTS over it.

They are blocking different damages
I like to think of heater shield to be used in ice maul arenas. Pesky cryo knights... though I do not own one. :P
On the other hand, Owlite is probably the best elemental shield in the game. Get that instead of Heater.
Dread skelly blocks shadow, which means pesky fiend projectiles, Zomgie swipes and kat bites. CoA works too, but has less shadow defense.
I think your point was the freeze resistance. Personally the only boss that deals freeze is Ice Queen which is shadow lair, but none of those shields provide the piercing resist.
@Dukeplatypus Aegis is commonly referred to as a downgraded BTS. Loss of Sword dmg med for a *tiny* amount of extra piercing and normal defense. Furthermore, no resists either- a better piercing shield might be Jelly or even Ironmight, but BTS outclasses them due to the damage bonus. Unless you are say a gunslinger or something, yet in those cases Jelly shield might benefit you more. But I'm not saying Aegis is bad- it is viable, but the lack of a med sword bonus is pretty... big a difference.

Situational
Situational, neither shield is better. Though a more useful (due to boss content) Elemental shield would be the Grey Owlite Shield (good for FSC & ICMF). Dread Skelly Shield is a great Shadow shield though (I love mine). Many would say that CoA is a better Shadow shield, but I would say only for Fire/Shock stratum. Based on bosses the Dread Skelly Shield is also more useful then the Heater, because the dread is great for SL GWW while there is currently no boss that needs Elemental/Freeze protection.

Elemental is still more common than shadow.
Hey, all bosses have at least one random turret dealing elemental.
But I consider shadow guys more annoyng.

If you are thinking of getting an Elemental shield and you don't have an Owlite then you should consider this choice as it is more "useful in general" for boss runs. The only reason to have Elemental/Freeze shield would be for running stratum 6 Construct/Gremlin Freeze arenas to tank the turret wave.

this comes down to elemental vs shadow, and its fairly simple. You encounter gun puppies literally everywhere, so if you want an all purpose shield, get the Elemental one. I prefer owlite over heater, myself, but i find elemental to be most usefull. Elemental, then pierce, then shadow.

To answer your question
Heater Shield is a niche shield. It's perfect on construct freeze levels, but fire and shock are more directly dangerous to the player and thus most people go for Owlite as their elemental shield.
Skelly Shield is a great general-purpose shadow shield and has more shadow defense (and a little less normal defense) than Crest of Almire.

Hmm
Skelly is arguably less niche than Heater. It's one of the best shields for Shadow Lair Gloaming Wildwoods, and great in Concrete Jungles and fiend levels. Also, the increased shadow defense makes it stand up better against Howlitzers.
However, there is simply no stratum which a Heater would work better than an Owlite.

What you guys may be missing
What you guys may be missing is like a lot of others if youve done all the missions you get all the defender recipes to 4 star, mabey hes thinking rather than buy another set of recipes he only needs one, ie the 5 star heater shield recipe. My gunner friend is doing just that building up a defender than makeing it a heater to save buying all the owl recipes.

Defender recipes are now free. He spent nothing to get them.
And then there is the question of effectiveness. Owlite is hands down better than heater. Nothing to it. It's like saying you'll upgrade your hot edge to 3*, simply because you already own it, instead of getting a fireburst brandish, which you have to fork over money to get.

Umm... Freeze?
Obviously the skelly shield. The heater shield to incredibly situational that its not worth anything past a novelty. And you lose the best piercing resist in the game by branching off. On the other hand, skelly is a very capable shadow shield that's great for fiends and blocks the very irritating poison and freeze. It pretty much blocks what Crest of Almire cant.
