I just want to be able to stand against one wall of an arena, and be able to shoot to the other side. Not even all the way to the other side, make it short by a block or two.
I'll have to get some higher star guns and some measurements. In my fuzzy memory, I'm only getting half an arena in distance. The arena doesn't even take up a full screen.
Making the range incredibly long would take any challenge out of the game.
Antigua line used to have x2 range and deal a lot more damage, they got nerfed.
The lack of range is also contributing to guns being horribly underpowered. If all guns were to gain a tile of range and a 25% boost in power, it would make them a lot more useable. As it stands, with all the enemy dodging and dash attacks, guns are only marginally safer than a sword, and mostly inferior to bombs. If you can solo a level successfully with guns only, odds are you've got the skill to do the same with a sword, and much faster at that. I love my Master Blaster (gonna eventually go Valiance), but getting outranged by Gun Puppies by a good 3-4 tiles sucks, and damage output is so low relative to swords that I've all but given up trying to be a "proper gunslinger".

If they have more fun playing with guns, who cares if it's slower (especially if they're solo)? Not everyone's goal is to beat stuff the fastest.

it is kind of wierd how we can throw pots across rooms but our high-tech plasma blasters only shoot about 10 feet
Well firstly, the dungeons don't all allow you to shoot too far. So being able to shoot clear across the level means little when the size of the room is whatever you see on the screen (or less). As well, why would you be able to shoot something you couldn't see? Most gun ranges are more or less the width of your screen (with some exceptions, not including wide screen displays).
