Or perhaps update the ones in use? They don't seem to be the most robust servers I've ever played on. Also, how many servers does this game actually use?
Time for Better Servers?
Erm, Avantir-Chaosfire have you ever played Lock-down??? or spiral knights for that matter. The lag is high for most people a lot of the time...
I've got the European server, but i have guildies who live in AUS and Asia, i feel sorry for them since they always get 1 bar...
This game is Noobishly laggy, glitchy and rubber-bandy. How have OOO managed to focus on accessory (GM note - using a term that describes a group of humans to mean "something I don't like" is not cool.) yet missed the fundamentals of a solid playable game?
The servers are working perfectly. How do I know? I don't get any lag. If the servers were lagging like you are saying, everyone would be lagging which isn't the case. Just because you are oblivious how stuff works doesn't mean it's OOO's fault for something on your end.
The only ones with good ping are US people, and acording with every sugestion sent, OOO have no interest in improve that.
All countrys from South America gets 300-400ping (red/yellow bar).
And after 2 years with the same discussion, the situación ain't going to change.
OOO has in NO PARTICULAR WHATSOEVER DIRECT CONTROL OF THE SERVERS currently located in Virginia and Ireland. Sega is the one in that control. Though there is a certain influence OOO can make with Sega, I highly doubt that the people in Sega would really care about an averagely rated game.
But I think that the most problematic issue is the bandwidth limit on any room, be it LD or clockworks. LD is laggy, blame it on the bandwidth limit. Bandwidth Limit, blame it on the server capabilities. Server capabilities, why blame it on the poor company that its sole purpose is to develop the game, but does not publish it on its own.
Stop your whining on OOO and rant on Sega, which is of course, more difficult to accomplish.
From what I'm reading, we need more servers around the world, not updates on what we have.
It's possible to play a game with a slow internet and not have lag, ya' know.
Although I doubt much of that could apply to this game....who know?
Well yeah... I'd prefer MOAR servers on awesome updates, because simply I can't enjoy them if I am lagging, am I wrong?
But neither OOO nor SEGA is going to be tickled, because.. you know.. it is hard to make a server for an underrated game with such a small team.
Anyways, just keep up the spirit and wait for the day where Spiral Knights has 5 servers around the world.
Moscow.
South America.
Asia.
Australia.
Damn it... I am wishing a lot. As if this is going to happen..
Is gettin' pessimist...
Goes back to sleep. Owait! Goes back to....
[ Dragneel has been disconnected ]
[ Dragneel can't log in forever ]
[ End of transmission ]
Without lag Spiral Knights wounld be not the same.
Lags here are feature.
We don't need better servers.
We need antilag trinkets.
Can you guys please read what Zaffy Laffy posted?
OOO has no control over the servers, where they are, how many there are, or the quality of the servers. SEGA DOES.
Before you go saying that OOO is busy counting their money, which is stupid considering the amount of events that they have to release just to keep this game RUNNING, understand what it takes to run an MMO.
In the meantime, try to figure out if there's a problem on your end first. There are several problems that could be lagging your game from your end, so look up some optimizations if you think that's the case. There are confirmed cases of Mac Snow Leopard and Java not functioning properly with each other, which causes severe lag. There are also a ridiculous amount of particle effects associated with various elements of the game itself (fire traps, snowfall, etc.) so there's also a chance your computer can't handle all of them.
Check things on your end first.
If you're fine, yell at SEGA about servers, not OOO.
You can yell at OOO about lack of new content and broken balance, but not something that's completely out of their control.
This is a ridiculous idea. Servers are ran by Java and Sega. Go up to java and saga, and say "Hey! Improve the damn servers in Spiral knights because they suck like you"
No more misconceptions please.
Servers are ran by Amazon (most likely), which are located in Virginia (USA) and Ireland (Eu). These servers are bought by Sega, which also bought down Spiral Knights publishing rights, and therefore ran the base game inside the servers. OOO has in no direct affiliation with Amazon. There is also another company named GameCyber, which also bought down the publishing rights to this game and publish it on a different server (Asia), completely separated from the main servers. Do note that game companies can set different rules and wants on the games they bought, so you may be wondering why the main game requires you to buy OCH and Elevator passes, while the asian one allows you to do so with CE.
Java is a platform for which the game's core system is ran on, your controls, UI etc. Java itself is a software company.
Technically we can say OOO is counting money because they sold their game to that asian company, but I believe it was to reach out to the Asian community because Sega DIRECTLY REFUSES TO DO SO. Sega is the one counting money, look at all the ridiculous games they have. All the money from the purchases made first goes to Sega, which gives a share percentage or a fixed amount to OOO.
Solution? More servers is indeed and will help solve lagging issues with relation to ping and possibly rubberbanding, packet losses etc. Unless Sega wants to spend all their kachings on this game, which has an average playerbase ~ 200k ACTIVE-ONLY players (the TF2 promotion pushed it to 1mil, but it didn't bother to keep the players), when other games have over 1mil players... nothing's gonna change.
Lessons Learnt
- OOO does not control servers, Sega does
- Different companies set different rules on the games, such as purchasing ability
- SK is not a super popular game such that Sega is willing to spend money to improve its servers
- All money that goes from the purchase of energy and etc goes to Sega first, then to the game developers (you can see some business going on)
- Only solution is that this game improves its ratings and playerbase, then Sega may come and look up to improve it. Alas, it is a vicious cycle. Small playerbase = Small servers. Small servers = Bad game. Bad game = Small playerbase.
Wouldn't host based instances be awesome? Yeah that would be awesome. Too bad it will never happen though.
You get what you pay for, sadly and alot of people arent willing to pay :P
I'd rather pay a monthly fee like WoW, and have a decent connection and servers, than paying nothing and getting crap quality.
And hey! OOO is the linking part to SEGA, they should also ask them to support the game more and more. Without servers, how are you going to have a large playerbase? The game is underrated because of the lag, but in any other ways, it is one of the best MMOs out there. Really.
SEGA : The Evilest Game Company.
@Wodanct
Yeah, it won't. It's an MMO.
@Dragneel
No way SK is getting a monthly fee. Those kinds of games simply don't work. Did TERA succeed as P2P? No. Guild Wars 2 didn't even try. World of Warcraft is F2P nowadays, you know. Up to level 20, with the max being 90. But still. P2P MMOs don't go around and considering SK's energy system, small playerbase dependent on the game being F2P, etc. there's no way SK would succeed as a P2P game.
About Sega, that's incorrect. EA is the evilest game company.

So yeah, you should all listen to Zaffy. I've stated these matters many times before but no one really seems to care and just continues complaining to OOO while not really knowing much about how servers work, or who controls them.
Anyone who remains unconvinced about the lag / servers, should join EU LD right now. Horrific lag spikes, comedy lag fights, and most people complaining about it...
Zaffy - i don't care who runs the servers. As developers of the game, OOO should have a vested interest in seeing their game run as was intended, on suitable hardware.
I readily agree with you! Prior to the February update/content I had 3-4 bars, as my internet is fast enough. After the Feb update, I'm getting 1-2 bars during peak hours, and 2-3 bars at 2am (this is PST in the States). Based on the lag increase due to active times, I assume that it is the SK servers being overcrowded or overworked. This lag is really impairing my SK playtime during the day (when I can play) and it makes me very unmotivated to play let alone pay for content in SK, given I can't use it without dealing with 2-4 seconds of lag. Sadly it clearly isn't my internet speed, as all other games (even on Steam) work perfectly with no lag. I do hope that OOO or whoever is in charge of the servers decides to upgrade them. The more content, the more users, the server lag will just get worse.
@Krakob
Nothing says MMO's can't have host based instances and some actually do. Would it be too logical to call Haven a lobby while actual clockwork/mission instances could be host based?
So we have a mediocre rated game with a small population, is that any excuse for only having two servers? I don't think so. The game will continue to have a small player base so as long as it remains obscure to most of the Internet. There must be a reason why SEGA bought Three Rings if they haven't really shown much support as in the networking department. There had to be some sort of profit to be made in it, as with any corporation, profits are to be made. Not much advertising of this game on SEGA's homepage other than a small article about them purchasing the developer.
No advertsing = No new players
Poor Server Connection = Frustrated player who eventually quit.
Which brings me up to my next question: just how many players (active) are there? By active I mean someone who logs into this game at least once a week, and that's a rather conservative number.
This game needs incentives for players to stick around, not just people who log on just to play A GRIND EVENT (that bloody Kat event) spend money on elevator passes, and then log off cause it's not worth grinding for 18+ hours on end. That's not going to get anyone to stay. It seems this year, Three Rings is trying a new approach to information on updates; such as when Nick published information about the pets and these new screenshots of monsters that--hopefully--will arrive soon.
I'm no detractor; I really love this game and I wish to see it thrive I just feel like the game has become stagnant and isn't reaching as many people as it could.
No.1 Yes, OOO may want to consider how their game would work as of the main server. Yes, OOO has some particular influence on the game. No, Sega still controls how the economy should work and their servers' status. No, OOO has no full control over Sega's actions and decisions.
Section Post #15 Subsection : "Do note that game companies can set different rules and wants on the games they bought, so you may be wondering why the main game requires you to buy OCH and Elevator passes, while the asian one allows you to do so with CE."
It's not about caring who runs the servers or not, rather about caring who is the one with the power. Obviously it is the one that buys down the publishing rights to the game.
No.2 Host-based... Honestly I didn't thought about it, but I think it is not a good solution. So what about this player joining a game hosted halfway across the globe? That ping is ridiculous. All your in-game variables (crowns, energy, items) are also stored in the main server, wouldn't host-based games give way to hacking attempts? What about LD? Whoever gets to host wins? What about when the host disconnects or just plainly lags (bandwidth limits, client-sided internet issues), others will be in the same boat.
No.3 True to fact that this game receives not much attention. I chanced upon this game by accident, looking for f2p games on steam. This puts a hole into Sega's wallet, wonder why this game is still running... Not to mention the size of the OOO crew working on this game. Slow updates also seem to bore players with repetitive gameplay. Nothing much to say.
Um, why? What's wrong with the existing ones?
