Exactly how "random" are item drops?

Poetry

These are my last five drops, basically one every month since January:

1) Graviton Vortex 5* (LOA) (solo) (treasure room) (Late-January 2013)
2) Graviton Bomb 4* (solo) (Weight of Darkness, during the Kat event)

3) Volcanic Salamander Mask 5* (solo) (second floor of Hazardous Heist prestige mission) 3-17-2013
4) Graviton Bomb 4* (duo) (depth 25 FSC - left side treasure room) 4-28-2013
5) Graviton Bomb 4* (solo) (GIM - treasure room, bottom left side) 5-17-2013

That's 3 Graviton Bombs and 1 Graviton Vortex ?!?!?

What are the odds that i would essentially get the same item 4 times? It seems so unlikely.

Perhaps the items we receive are determined by a combination of actions? Or maybe the location itself plays into it.

That would make sense: Every location where i've found a Graviton Bomb/Vortex has contained either a zombie or a frankenzom.

And the item i found in March (the Volcanic Salamander Mask) was found in a level containing Scorchers.

Another thing to note, i haven't equipped any of the bombs. Is it possible that the game assumes i don't have one yet because i haven't equipped the one i found in January?

I only get 2*-3* item drops

I only get 2*-3* item drops and you complaining why you keep getting 4* vortex bomb. Ah my head hurts.

Anyway, back to topic. Random is random. No matter how low the odds are, they are not impossible and if the population size is large enough, it will happen (to someone) eventually.

Did you happen to notice if

Did you happen to notice if your drops were thematically linked to the level?

Ever since i found a Circuit Break Armor during GiM, i've felt that the level/enemy theme might play a role in determining what the drop is.

The flood of Graviton Bombs might confirm this (Shadow Enemies=Shadow Drops).

My friend got a Rock Jelly Suit in the treasure room of C42. I think that equip drops ARE linked to the levels you are in.

Oh, also I got a 1* Big Beast Basher from the boxes right before the Snarbolax level.

Variations on this thread come up every couple of months. Please know that there is a "master" thread, started by a Game Master, for collecting data on item drops: Confirming Treasure Box Equipment Drops. Please do not post your data on item drops here; post it there instead, so that we have it in one place.

Poetry, I agree that your experience is pretty surprising. For what it's worth, the 3-star Graviton is one of my best item drops, and it occurred before I had any bomb of that line. So my experience corroborates yours, but anecdotally at best. Maybe the data in the master thread will help you figure it out for us. Good luck.

I usually post it in the master thread, but this thread is asking specific questions (esp. regarding Graviton Bombs), as opposed to merely being archival. The "Confirming Treasure Box Equipment Drops" thread isn't exactly conversational.

lucky man is lucky. But yes, item drops correspont to theme. A volttech alchemer MKII dropped to my friend in GiTM.

It is pretty well known by now that the floor/stratum you are in can influences equipment drops. You got 4 Gravitons and a Volcanic Salamander piece. The Gravitons came from all Undead areas (FSC, LOA, Weight of Darkness, and GitM). The Salamander came from Hazardous Heist, but I'd be willing to bet money that it was a Fire floor that time around.
