Sometime in the last two updates the compound final rooms have been changed. Being a person who likes to clear every level of everything including blocks I wasn't very happy when I found out that the minis in the compounds never stop spawning. But in one of the last 2 updates OOO has changed the final rooms so that when you are able to get to the elevator the minis stop respawning. Just making sure everybody knows.
Also to all the people who want minis to drop stuff: minis do drop stuff. Only the minis in the final room drop nothing. Minis can even drop dragon scales, reaper ribs and royal cores.
I am so happy right now.

My impression was that respawning monsters don't drop treasure, but non-respawning monsters (sometimes) do. Leafblader, does that agree with (and explain) your experience?

Thats right but the huge groups of minis that spawn in the final rooms also drop nothing.
