I'm nearly positive this thread exists elsewhere, but it deserves a fresh start!

How did you discover Spiral Knights?
What captivates you interest in the game?
What's YOUR story?

Here's what brought me here:
So Three Rings had formerly been using me as a test subject for their latest experiment but when they lost their government funding because they purposely self destructed the entire experiment themselves, they told me to get a new job. I secretly stalked them for months, hoping they would revive their program. But then they discovered me and took awe in how I held loyal to them despite the stalking. They then offered me a position within Spiral Knights at the time of its release. Of course, my loyalty made me take the job and now I work as a secret inspirational undercover agent with the Strangers.

I came to the game to get the TF2 hat, but I loved the art style (especially the divine avenger's charge, which was at the time the coolest thing ever), and the idea of going around collecting small circular icons. But what really kept me was when I googled "energy crisis" and saw all of the threads about how everyone was upset about them changing the crafting costs way back when. I wanted to see what was up with this game, whose developers were apparently so terrible. To see if the developers were really so bad, and what would eventually become of it all. Just seemed rather interesting to me, so I stayed because the game wasn't bad and I had to know what would happen in the exciting political thriller that was the forums. I guess I've seen that now.

A friend during a summer told

A friend during a summer told me about SK. After a few weeks after the camp I remembered the game he talked about. What drawn me to SK was how simple ans fun the game was. The crafting system was easy enough to understand and even though I didn't have top quality gear. I can always have fun. It also helps that you have IRL friends who plays SK too.

I've never been to those MMO cites, how are they? They seem to spam my email a lot with SPECIAL PROMOTIONS. Who knows, maybe some other MMO values their forum-goers heh heh heh.

I first noticed this game 2

I first noticed this game 2 years ago. I wanted to play but never had the chance. This summer was my first chance to play it. It's a great game but now I have to stop playing because of college. When I'm done I'll be looking for SK.

So in 4 years after you've got your degree, it'll be high time to play video games. I'm sure your folks at home will be proud of what you do with that degree.....

Naw, I joke. University isn't such a huge thing, you can find time to play vidya games if you want. Especially freshman year.

For anyone who took my story literally, that paragraph is a giant metaphor. Parts of it still have a vain of truth to it, however.

How did you discover Spiral Knights?
A friend cracked a harsh joke about the game, and it was F2P, so I thought "what the heck" and tried it.

What captivates your interest in the game?
Being able to interact with other people from all over the world is a nice thing.

What's YOUR story?
Started the game, got glitch stucked in the recruit camp, got pulled out by a GM TWICE! Finally got to haven, worked to craft a DA, divine veil, and vog, got into a guild that merged with The Illusionists, eventually got passed between different LD guilds when officers forgot to reinvite me, ended up in DG, left during Laylla's retirement, rejoined and spent half of ingame time tagging along with Rebootse and Ezho on both of their escapades, went toe-to-toe with Nethrom (my callahan vs. his iron slug), made a decent reputation in LD, and am currently running from a wave of shock kats. *gasps for air*

Steam.

Once upon a time I hung out on an IRC channel. People were talking about using something called Mumble to chat per voice. I wanted to hear them too!
They said I may come with them as an extra target for aliens, and to do so should get Steam, get Alien Swarm, and do whatever it was to join their voice.
I ran with them a bit ("Follow Joq! Follow Joq!" is what I heard most over that voice chat), getting slaughtered in their Brutal mode, and me not used to wasd keys.

Soon after they got bored with the game, I stuck around. Found friends to play with.
One of them pointed out the Steam Event where you could get coals (end of 2011). There was a free game where you just had to throw a snowball at a player, so I downloaded that.
To make a long story short, I got the coal, and sold it for ce. The friend who had been most fun playing Alien Swarm with came on less and less often, I found new friends on Spiral Knights.

Besides the friends, I would have hated to let Mist Energy go to waste, so I stuck around. I like top-down co-op. (I'm incompatible with view to the front in computer games.)
It was exciting to make Glacius, and even getting Undead Med on it!
I was awed when Vokster died for me in FSC to heat it.

These days I like piling up crowns and getting fancy stuff for them.
I used to prefer to run with friends, but since Mist Energy was disbanded, I like to play alone too.
Still meeting friends and playing with them occasionally.

There's always some goal, making new armour that takes my fancy, working on Trophies...
Right now a kat hat. Decided that I want one after all.

For some inexplicable reason, fighting or dodging the denizens of the clockwork is fun. :)

The big ol' steam f2p launch, and the video trailer pretty much got me interested. That and free hats.

What captivates you interest in the game?
New enemies, new bosses, new game mechanics, new gear.

What's YOUR story?
Oh, this is the story 'bout a guy named Al and he...

Uh not sure what this question is asking actually. I've haven't gone a whole week without at least logging in since the steam launch.

Hats, what else?

TF2 already had its hooks in me when SK was first added to Steam, so when I saw that I could get a cool knight's helmet just by getting an achievement in some random F2P game, I jumped on it. I figured I'd play for long enough to get the hat, and then drop it. As it turned out, I had enough fun with the game to stick around for a while longer...and here I sit two years later, with SK second only to TF2 in my Steam playtime rankings. As it turns out, a multiplayer 2D Zelda experience with a quirky art style and fantastic soundtrack is a lot of fun to play. I've pretty much avoided other F2P titles like the plague since then, because I'm scared of getting this hooked on something else.

Ahem

It was one of the few games on Steam that looked interesting, was free, and available for Mac. Also it takes up very little hard drive space.

I'm not the biggest fan of grinding, but that feel of leveling up and getting better and seeing something new every day is kinda nice.

My Skylark escape pod crashed upside down and I've been a little "off" ever since. Bumped my head or something.

I came around for a Tf2 hat, but then got kinda addicted to the gameplay and style. Just when I was starting to get frustrated by the grinding between 3* and 5* equipment, the first X-mas Promo hit. Explorer Packs were a measly $2.50... so I spent $20. Few months later, I reached my peak, becoming GM of a guild with almost 100 active members... Then the guild drove me to insanity, left the guilds, stumbled into a lockdown guild, screwed that up and flopped into another guild which subsequently died around me. Now I'm just that grizzled vet in a small, aspiring guild. I spend most of my time watching the new spiffy sets of Proto Armor, decorated in fancy accessories, jaunt through their missions. Sometimes they'll stop to listen to my tales of old, exploring the arcade and charging into FSC with 4* equipment. If I'm lucky, they ask me to lead a crusade through the Shadow Lairs... but those moments are few and far between.

Well, like many, I came for a

Well, like many, I came for a lovely hat for my favorite war themed hat simulator, TF2. Then, I started to actually PLAY the game and was just awed at how seamless everything was, whereas in TF2 we've still got glitched misc parts flying in the air. I sat there blowing through the arcade and just getting gear for myself, not even caring about a specialty. I had garnered a gunslinger and spiral demo set when I didn't even have a tier 3 bomb or blaster!

The art style just keeps me at my laptop, making me grab my sketchbook when new armor or costumes are released. The story is quite boring, but the arcade and coliseum are quite exceptional.

My story? Once upon a time in a land not so far away, a guy was born in New York. From there, he moved to New Jersey where he thinks of some of the finer things in life; what games he should play, is Chelsea going to win, and if the cow jumped over the moon.. why the f**k did it jump over the moon?
Blah blah blah; more words. I draw.

How did you discover Spiral

How did you discover Spiral Knights?
I'm a wizard.

... And, a former YouTube Let's Player held a livestream in which he was playing Spiral Knights. He asked his viewers if they wished to join in and I happened to be one of the lucky volunteers who managed to jump in fast enough to join arms. Said person no longer plays, sadly, but I remain as a regular.

What captivates you interest in the game?
I find the art direction charming and the world pulls my curious mind in with its mystery and lore. It is my greatest hope that eventually I will discover all there is to know about this world and how it works in this setting.

What's YOUR story?
My story? The book is shut tight with an ornamental lock, covered in a blanket of dust and mystique, masking the truths kept inside this old relic which I call my past..

I was on this site called Miniclip. It was a place that held many free flash games. Along with this there was a section that said "MMOs". I then saw Spiral Knights. I clicked on it and fell in love.

What captivates your interest in the game?
The community. And Nick.

What's YOUR story?
Not sure if this matters, but I was born in California. There my story. (Spoiler Alert! I moved to Texas. :OOO)

Back in MY day...

How did you discover Spiral Knights?
I think I found the trailer and I signed up for the beta and it 'twas great.

What captivates your interest in the game?
I'd say the community. And now all the new features (dashing, shield bashing, battle sprites)

What's YOUR story?
Ok, kiddies, gather around and listen to yer local beta tester...
It all started one day when I was... Doing something on the internet, I think. Probably. And I found the trailer for the game and it was all like "HEY YOU SIGN UP FOR BETA" and I'm like "OOOOOOOOOOOOKAAAY" So I sign up and forget about the game.
Then I got an e-mail.
Then I read the e-mail.
Then I said "Wait, the heck is this?"
Then I played the game as my first character, Jameak.
Forever.
And ever.
Until I got bored and left.

Anywho, the game was officially released and some stuff happened and I continued to ignore it until it came out on steam. At the time I was going to boarding school and one of my friends had found the game and he suggested we play it. Our internet wasn't all that good and it was a pretty small game so we did. This time I was Manaw (manaw, do doooo, de do doo). AND IT WAS GREATER WIF MAH BUDDEHS. We had a full group of 4 and we'd play together and we eventually joined a guild before we got tired and left the game.

My third (and current) affair with the game was when I found a mysterious e-mail telling me that elevators were free. "NO ENERGY?!?!?!" I yelled in surprise. I redownloaded the game and IT WAS THE GREATESTER. I made a new character (October-Days) and drooled over mah new flak jacket and then kicked all the gremlin butt.
Still wish I could be a gremlin though.

How did you discover Spiral Knights?

It was school vacation time in Japan, which is in April. My friend and I were looking for an online game we could play together even though neither of us had ever played an MMO before. Spiral Knights had just made its debut and was featured briefly on Yahoo, so we tried it out.

What captivates your interest in the game?

A LOT of things. The artwork and music are great but if the play commands weren't Java-based I probably wouldn't have stuck around. I love the unique look of our characters and that they are not realistic looking. It has a very addicting quality to it, and once you've become deeply invested in it, it's very hard to walk away from. I was in several guilds but found them all to be lacking in some ways. I'm "in a very happy place" now as founder and GM of a thriving, mentoring guild.

What's YOUR story?

White American father, Japanese mother, raised mainly in California but currently living in Japan and working as an English teacher plus.
