I'm currently a mostly 4* knight looking to upgrade to 5*. I already used up the eternal orbs I got from missions...
So my question is, would I be better off buying the orbs or trying to find them? Where would I find them and how common are they?

Orbs aren't common, you'll get frustrated trying to find them. Is much easier to use your cr.

It seems that you want to play Tier 3 Elite, and you want to frequent locales with many treasure boxes: danger missions, arenas, treasure vaults? I'm not aware of any data that could actually answer your "how common are they?" question.
