I think it should be more Tournament style 1v1 battles. Then a lot more strategy and tactics will be involved because you won't know what you're really up against until you're in there.

If it's strategy and tactics you're looking for, reducing team size to 1 is not the answer. That makes bombs and charge attacks completely useless, since you have no one else to worry about.
