Which is the better event?
Apocrea vs Kataclysm
Apocrea.
Candlestick keep sucks no matter which way you try to sugar coat it, Black Kats are too rare to make it worth it, and getting every Kat Hat is near impossible without no-lifing it. And Margrel, while a fun fight, requires a blood sacrifice in order for you to even have a chance to find a book of dark rituals.
Meanwhile, Apocrea provides sufficient tokens with a fair amount of work, doesn't rely entirely on random encounters, and the monster of the week is actually more intimidating than Margrel.
Apocrea, certainly. Apocrea encourages teamwork without encouraging alt-dragging. While finding lost souls technically relies on luck, they're frequent enough that you always feel like you're constantly making progress, and that it's because of effort, planning and skill rather than luck.
I don't even think it was a contest. One is a good event and the other is not.
I didn't play Winterfest in 2012. What made it different from 2011?
Winterfest...
Is that the one where they added the greavers and the presents...
*Shudders*
That word, Greavers is all you need to know..
To be honest though, it was do-able, you just had to have a lot of skill. ALOT. To deal with those respawning greavers, devilites, and freeze vents...
*faints*
That horrible and boring repeatable mission where you had to dodge Snowballs from devilites with the equivalent of Movespeed Decrease Very High to gather 1,000s of tokens. Each box you brought over gave you 1 or 3 tokens.
Dont forget the Humbug Hat Hunts! Get your buddies together, and find the Gremlin Recon that spawned once every minute (assuming there wasn't already one alive).
Man they may have gotten a bit dull... but I made so much off Humbug Hats.
You also need immunity to freeze traps if you want to be as efficient as possible.
Even so it doesn't make it any less tedious.
I haven't seen the Kataclysm, but Apocrea was just loaded with fake difficulty.
Freeze-like status you can't resist and can't be freed from by monsters or yourself? Check.
Attack that ignores shield? Check.
Respawning/unkillable enemies? Check.
Narrow timeframe (souls despawning quickly, also the event itself)? Doublecheck.
So I can't say which one is worse, really.
Let's weigh the pros and cons of each, shall we?
The Kataclysm...
-Brought attention to one of the most avoided level sets in the game.
-Gave split-boost gear for each "class".
-Introduced a fun boss, more lore, and a new enemy.
And, yet, it...
-was entirely based on luck.
-restricted new content to an event, based purely on luck.
-didn't actually fix the qualms players had with the level set.
And now let's look at Apocrea. It...
-Introduced brand-new graphics for the mid-mission hub levels.
-Focused around a free-roam level design based on exploration while avoiding an unkillable enemy. People wanted another free-roam level for ages. Some people also wanted more situations in which you had to avoid an enemy rather than flat-out obliterate it.
-added three variations of existing gear that gave Poison more representation.
-added more lore.
And, yet, it...
-is still based largely on luck, although not nearly as much as the Kataclysm.
-gave almost no means of navigation in said free-roam level.
-punished you extremely hard for not having a good AoE weapon, or for getting caught by the Harvester at all.
-didn't exactly add "new" gear.
-also restricted content to an event.
My verdict is that Apocrea had its thorns, but was much, much better than the Kataclysm.
Didn't play Kataclysm, so I can't comment on it. Apocrea was pretty good though. Pretty skill-based in terms of getting all your loot. Kataclysm sounds a LOT more luck-based, which doesn't really interest me. I hope future events are modeled more like Apocrea, where skilled play nets you nice rewards.
Apocrea.
The Kataclysm event is entirely dependant on the small chance of a Kat being a Black Kat, and their rarity made it too tedious to bother. You could go days without encountering a Black Kat.
Apocrea on the other hand was a replayable, challenging mission which was pretty much guaranteed to give you tokens every visit. Although the Freed Souls were also luck based, they were frequent enough to make one feel like you were getting rewarded for the effort.
The Kataclysm is better if you get a Book because margrel is a fun boss but otherwise apocrea is better.
Nothing had such a game-reviving impact so far as that did for me. Not even pets/elevators/pretty much anything.
While you can say things like "they were too rare, I couldn't find them", let me tell you something: it was pretty fun to hunt them with an experienced crew. Also, I ENJOY running on Candlestick, and there was some real goal at the end. These "new" weapons are not bad, but how much time did it take to get them? Almost none compared to the usual SK-grind standard. Was there any reason to run Apocrea after that? Nope!
That's where Kataclysm really shines. You could make a fortune and have a lot of fun. Can't say either of those for Apocrea...
I sadly didn't play Kataclysm, but I was able to play Apocrea.
I'm a bit sad that it ended so fast, I was just getting close to getting one of the weapons.
Does OOO expect me to play Spiral Knights 24/7?
I did however like the ability to roam around and search for things and the hubs looked awesome as well.
I hope it will return in the future. I still want to be able to spend my saved sigils and use my gathered materials.
A: Because you can find them randomly in the clockworks, and not have to do a mission for them.
B: Easy to hunt down solo.
C: You can just run through a Candlestick Keep and only stop for a black kat, not that hard.
Kataclysm.
