or you can send a support mail and ask to merge your account with the steam one. either way, you can't go back.

No! Don't connect it to steam!
It takes twice the time to patch, and steam will slow down your game!

I dislike Steam if only because it takes forever to patch on my computer, whereas the other downloadable client works just fine. And I can't connect Steam to Kongregate.
But I think your question has been answered.
Download Spiral Knights on Steam. Launch the Steam SK and sign in with your knight. If it automatically logs you in and starts a new character, just log off. Once you log in it should ask if you want to bind that account to Steam.
