So.......is it currently considered "illegal" (i.e., a ban-worthy offense) for *anyone* to buy these things from the AH, or are those of us who knew nothing about this particular glitch until *after* it was fixed, still allowed to spend our crowns/CE/etc. on whatever we please? :/

If you want to get rid of them. . .
You can always send them to another knight and then just delete the knight if you feel guilty or just flat out don't want them.
Edit: Oh and yes it's over the top to permaban people, the "glitch" wasn't some sneaky thing where one has to take multiple researched steps to exploit the game. The energy depot and flash sales were in a way flung right at your face with bold text in the "special" section. I thought it'd be nice if they just overlooked this and we all got the joy of having tons of an item, but nope.

Welp I got a warning.
I send a mail via Support Ticket after I got a warning from GM.

Thank you for contacting us. Our Terms of Service do indicate that it's illegal to take advantage of a bug and that we expect players to report issues like that they come across. However we also understand that it can be confusing where this line is or even if something is a bug. That's why we try to be careful to only take action in cases where we believe someone had an intent to exploit something, which doesn't seem to be the case here.
Please keep them in your inventory while we look into this, do not trade them away or put them in storage. We'll update with more information as soon as we're able. Thank you in advance for your patience.

Nothing said about actually using them though... at least 2 different GM didn't mention it... Clotho for Fehzor, ???? for Xyka and Galene for Icesalex..
So equipping them is okay? (IDK if my friend lost all his vees but he only had 750 left from his 10k because of trivias and quizes giveaway)

You can try to find as many loopholes as you please, but I'm certain that may fall under "intent of abuse". I'd say just wait until OOO publicly addresses the issue. There is a lot of confusion going on around here, so it'd be best to wait for the commotion to settle down.

I saw 10k prismatic bolted vee with a 100k cr bid on it in AH and was laughing soooo hard...
I was bidding on it and the auction was suddenly cancelled, I can only assume that the seller was permabanned.
I've got a stack of PBV's that I purchased from the Auction House, it appears the only players being hit with permanent bans at the moment are the ones who were directly purchasing PBV's from the supply depot in bulk, A.K.A, using them for direct, instant and intentional profit.

I got Clotho too.
I asked him to remove all 100 vees from my inventory. I was given two choices: all removed, or 25 back. I chose the former since I didn't want any on my character.

Guys.
New announcement sneaked in.
OOO should put an announcement regarding this rather than telling it to the people via support mail so they can tell the community about it... so it spread like a virus...
IDK... my friend got 1 hour ban... is that all? it's quite laughable... if you are threatening us to go in the corner for 5 minutes it's not adressing the problem in any way, shape or form.
And yes, he got ban 1 hour, had 10k (or so) bolted vee... so don't worry -_-
