There are a few problems

There are a few problems happening in Steam for the moment from what I heard.
If you wish to convert your spiral knight account onto your steam account, you can NEVER unconvert it.
Meaning that it MAY or MAY NOT be playable only on Steam.

Advantages:
Offline game trading with other steam players
Integrated voice chat (It's okay.)
Patches update generally faster since it's apart of your steam library and whatever. (So if you have steam online, the game will mindlessly update while you're doing something else)

Disadvantages:
Steam goes down sometimes causing the game to be inaccessible.
BlahBlahBlah
There's a few threads about this, but I can't find them.

speaking for myself

I have Steam installed for other games, but my Spiral Knights account is through spiralknights.com, and I play it using the downloadable client. I don't see a compelling reason to switch my account to Steam. I don't want to voice chat, except with my brother, who already knows how to reach me. The fact that you can't convert back from Steam worries me. The fact that Steam recently had an outage worries me. The fact that you can't play through Steam on Linux bugs me.

Steam, whether people want to hear it or not, is a very, very buggy platform, that i wouldn't exactly trust.
Yeah you can get energy easier if you're of the younger crowd by buying steam cards, and you can trade out of game along with getting iron wolf stuff, but it's not worth the gamble.
