David sat, back pressed against a stone cold wall. His sweat trickled down his forehead slowly, as he thought out his final movements. A deafening scream came from around the wall, making David's stomach churn. "This is it," he said to himself. "Time to go out with a bang." He jumped up with a jolt, and grabbed his twin Valiances hanging from his holsters on either of his sides. Then he flicked himself around the corner to see the creature. His eyes widened and his terror grew exponentially as he stared at a new creation of the Devilites. The 'Ghast', it was called, and it chilled him to the bone. He closed his eyes, raised his pistols, and squeezed the triggers.
Shadow encased David's body as he slowly descended into darkness. The air was cool and smelled like blood. The void protruded into his mind, trying to seize his thoughts and memories from him. He resisted with all of his strength, but it was unrelenting. His mind had but seconds to break and descend into madness. But he remembered what had helped him with everything: his Team.
David's mind stopped at a distant memory, in an attempt to break the void's hold.
"Listen up, maggots! You've got 24 hours to make teams and prepare for your tests. Rules are four people maximum to each team." The sergeant's voice blared over all else. David leaned back on his bench, only to forget it had no backing. He fell abruptly. Laughing echoed through the barracks cafeteria, as he struggled to get himself back up onto the bench. "Here, let me help you." Jayna, a girl he knew, extended her hand. He grabbed it and stood back up.
"Thanks," David said. "Maybe next time I won't forget there are no back rests in this godforsaken place." She laughed. "Hey, would you like to be on my team?" Asked David. "I've already got John and Evan."
"Possibly," she responded. "I'll already been requested by another friend to be with them. What's your incentive?"
"You won't have to completely fail the test."
"Is that so? What makes you think you, John and Evan have anything more to offer then my friend does?"
"Look, let's play in the arena for it. Opposite teams, first team to 600 wins."
"Deal."
David's mind snapped back to reality, and with the same quickness, snapped blank.
