Spiral Souls RP [Discussion][LORE UPDATED ON 1/12/16][APPS OPEN]

The Spiral Order, forged in the turmoil of the Morai Wars, has fled its home on Isora. Shot out into the dark expanse of space, they happen upon the strange alien planet of Cradle. Running low on fuel and power, they are forced to abandon ship as the Skylark crashes to the land below. Newly awakening in this strange and dangerous world, surviving knights everywhere make pilgrimage to the light of their comrades’ fire, and to safety in numbers.
______________________________________________________________
Essentials:
Basically, it’s Spiral Knights with a Dark Souls tinge. Everything is darker and more dangerous. Haven will serve as an equivalent to Firelink Shrine, where knights can rest, train, and heal after being out on the frontier. The Gremlin Blacksmiths, Punch and Vise, are capable of enchanting weapons with elemental magic or transforming them into completely different, more powerful forms by using “Boss Souls” (Dropped from boss monsters or significantly powerful enemies in the Clockworks). What the weapons turn when using boss souls into I’ll leave up to players, concerning names and effects, but remember, nothing OP! You can try looking to Boss Token weapons from the game or actual boss soul weapons in Dark Souls for inspiration:
http://darksouls.wiki.fextralife.com/Boss+Soul+Weapons
http://darksouls2.wiki.fextralife.com/Boss+Soul+Weapons
Other vendors in Haven stay the same, really, and can sell low to mid-level gear and armor (0 Stars to 3 Stars). Alchemy is non existent, thus leaving players to scavenge up increasingly more powerful weapons as they go along (as in finding them in the field, not crafting them. 4 Star and 5 Star equipment can be scrounged up in treasure chests or corpses in the deeper levels of the Clockworks. Emberlight also sells 4 star and 5 star gear.). The Forge can still upgrade weapons in the same way as in-game, using fire crystals. There are no battle sprites available.
Health packs are no more! Instead, your grievous injuries stay with you until you are patched up or die, and in event of the latter, you revive back at the bonfire you most recently interacted with, with all your belongings (Yes, this needs to be present). Bonfires are always found next to the terminals leading deeper into the Clockworks. They are somewhat of an unknown to knights, but they keep you from true death. However, be wary. Being pushed from death to the flame of a bonfire over and over will take a toll on you. The more one revives, the closer you are to going mad and turning on your comrades. You will feel headaches, hunger, hear voices, until finally, you become Hollowed. You lose your intelligence and compassion, but not your skill as a warrior, making Hollowed knights dangerous entities. If this happens to your character, you can chose to continue playing as a Hollow (could make for some unique writing and/or developments in the story), or put your character somewhere and say, “Up for execution!”, then create a different character to play as should you chose to.
When executing Hollowed comrades, just please, DON’T BLOW THROUGH IT LIKE YOU JUST KILLED ANOTHER MONSTER (Unless that’s the kind of person your character is, which is also totally viable. In that case, you may even enjoy it). These are your fallen comrades, be sad, panicky, angry, or scared when this happens, as long as it is within sensible story parameters. It should be like killing Old Yeller. Thankfully, one can “reset” this progression towards Hollowing with Sparks of Life. This is now the only use for them. Unfortunately, this cannot cure already Hollowed individuals. These are extremely valuable, so don’t go flaunting them around. The more unsavory of your comrades may just try to take some from you.
Monsters also stay the same, with the exception of modified boss monsters, boss monsters I will create, and possibly some new enemies and/or NPCs. Standard monsters are found in their appropriate locations.
Emberlight is located in a significantly deep part of the Clockworks, and acts as another rest area for knights. Many Gremlin inventors and traders offer powerful weapons and armor, from 4 to 5 star gear. Weapons are also enchantable and reinforceable there through the local Gremlin blacksmith, Godo.

The Plot:
After crashing on Cradle, the knights of the Spiral Order are thrown into chaos. Large chunks of the Order become separated from each other, and form the various Covenants. The Order itself still exists, but on a smaller scale. Additionally, when landing, many knights find that they have been bound to bonfires by an unknown force, and can no longer truly die. Some hypothesize that it may be an effect coming from the planet itself, although there is no way to truly determine this yet. These bonfires, while first seen as a safeguard, have become signs of condemnation. Knights began to Hollow after dying too many times, immortal creatures doomed to madness and hunger unless put out of their misery. After discovering this, many knights became afraid. But, as it was, brave souls were needed to survive the plights of Cradle. Ozlo commissioned that all able-bodied warriors take up arms, and journey to the Core of Cradle. He himself, with the four skilled knights of Alpha Squad, journeyed into the Clockworks, but never returned. They endeavored to find what the massive energy reading down there was, and if possible, harvest it, in the hopes they’d be able to leave this planet. Many dangerous monsters lie beneath in the Clockworks, and the road will be long and perilous. You will die, over and over and over. Struggle against your shackles, and perhaps you can save yourself.

IMPORTANT STUFF BEFORE YOU WRITE OUT YOUR APP 'N THINGS:
- Remember, no godmodding, powerplaying, etc, none of that nasty stuff. If someone writes, "He smiled at him, but was secretly a Reaper", your character can't magically become suspicious since, in-game, the character only sees a smile.
- All OOC posts go here, and nowhere else. The actual RP thread is for the real action only.
- Death is going to be an integral part of gameplay here. Do not be afraid of letting your beautifully crafted animu hero (which shouldn't actually be some beautifully crafted animu hero) fall defeated and die. Bonfires and the process of Hollowing are important story factors. But, this doesn't mean you write "He dies", and it happens. Put it within reason. If one is seriously injured and is forced into combat, then they likely die. When writing, accept that if the circumstances are realistic, YOU MUST DIE. Do not be afraid to choose this option if someone writes, "He swung his sword savagely at his neck", and both your legs are broken.
- As stated above, do not make your character a Mary Sue. Give them some flaws, impairments, inadequacies and fears! Make them like REAL PEOPLE.
- GUNS! Here, to avoid, "And then I shot him in the head and he died" (aka quick, boring battles), guns act as means for stunning or inflicting status effects on opponents. Sustained fire will cause significant damage, but not kill. Try landing a last blow with your blade.
- Your character will not start off as part of a Covenant, as you choose how/when your character stumbles upon and/or joins the Covenant of your choosing, if you join one at all. AND DO NOT ALL FLOOD ONE COVENANT. (Was that a Halo joke?)
- You are free to create and control NPCs and monsters as you wish, as long as they are within reason. I will lightly control how the game goes, in addition to select NPCs, but remember, you all follow the progression stages above.
- Monsters cannot be reasoned with! Perhaps entities like Arkus and the Scarlet Fortress Knights can be (kinda) conversed with, but they will still try to kill you. It only ends when they die.
- It is up to you whether your character bands together with other players, or walks alone, only interacting with others when they happen upon them.
- There is no stat-based gameplay! Let your writing control the story (reasonably).

Your first post (as seen in the example link above) in the RP is standard stuff; fighting through monsters and having Rhendon (me!) explain things to you later as you enter the Rescue Camp. After that, players will trek towards Haven, and fight the Ironwood Sentinel on the way there. It is required that all characters be together for this boss. After Haven, you are free to go your own ways, to a degree. Have fun!
And prepare to die.
List of Characters:
- Merlot, played by Liminori
- Anima, played by Bombing-Run
- Raleigh, played by Blazecat-Percival

Nope, this actually has nothing to do with in-game stuff and ranking. Everything happens in writing on the RP thread.

Aww man. I'm not good at RP-ing.
Everyone does their actions in 1st Person like: I pick up the Shotgun.
Where I do something Generic like this: *picks up shotgun*

You don't have to write in first person, in the example post it was in third person

Name: Merlot. While she did concur that her name was rather odd, she assumed there was nothing to it. Merlot is a wine.
Gender/Age: ♀/19. She was unable to come up with anything of importance, besides the stats themselves...
Appearance: Her face gave off a cold sort of complexion, the kind you see on people who have seen more death than they bargained for. Her height was a little lower than average, but, she cannot recall being called 'Shorty' or anything similar because of it (5'1) . Her somewhat small mouth appeared to be in a permanent frown, for all anyone else can tell. Her eyes are blue, much like the sea. Glasses frame her eyes with silver. Her obsidian hair scoops down from the top of the head to between the neck and chin, with bangs that don't quite reach her eyebrows. Somewhat pale skin.
Starting Equipment: Cobalt Armor and Helm. It appears the equipment has been touched up to look like scalemail.
Bristling Buckler and Cutter. Nothing of note here, just some slightly scuffed up gear.
Personality: Merlot is generally very serious, with reason dictating her logic. Trust is more important than some flimsy rule. If the logical answer will lead her to success, she will take it, nine times out of ten. Sometimes she'll try to crack a few jokes, if the mood is a little too serious for her to handle; it's an old habit she keeps falling back on. . . I wonder, why? Perhaps she has more to say...?
Starting Gift: Locket. It was a promise, reason, and conviction, all in one. But... Who gave it to her? Contains a picture of an unidentified male. (Can I please have some, er, 'surprise' plot, if I make it that far? Even if it is something absolutely terrible? Also, I know; a technical person would choose the Spark, but I'm picking. Not her.)
Backstory: Merlot was born into the order, but never truly got to know her parents; meaning she learned to cook for herself, among other things. Time passed on, and she decided she would take care of people. So, she turned to the one place where she thought she could help; Nursing. At first, it was okay. A few people had some injuries, but very rarely life threatening ones. A cut down the arm... bleeding eyes... broken legs... But eventually, something happened. The wounded came in in larger and larger amounts. The Morai war had started. Casualties and wounded came in faster than Merlot could do anything, so all she could do was watch a lot of them die, right before her eyes. To keep from going insane, she distanced her emotions from her patients. A good number of patients were scared by the cold, dead eyes Merlot stared at them with. Somewhere along the line, Merlot started telling cruel, dark, morbid jokes about man's mortality. Even after the Morai war, things were the same.

By the way, while the Spur has the same speed as a flourish, they're still not the same thing.

Alright, your app looks good, putting it up.
Surprise plot? Sure, as long as it fits with the tone of the story.

Name: Anima. An odd name... But strangely fitting for this world.
Gender/Age: 18 / ♂
Appearance: He gave off an inspiring, cheerful aura - like a child that hadn't found out about the horrors of the world. He was considered an average size, nothing too outstanding about his height. (Let's put him at about 5'6", shall we?) His mouth was nearly always upturned in a slight smile, and his bright green eyes seemed to beam hope. Short, light brown hair covered the top of his head, and covered some of his forehead too. A noticeable feature of Anima's would be his neck and chin - burn marks would adorn his skin there. His skin was a slightly dark tone.
Starting Equipment: Cobalt armor and Sentinel helm. The armor and helmet seem touched up to be slightly darker than they already were, giving off an ebony tinge. Anima uses a brandish and a pummel gun as weapons. In case of an emergency, he uses a small volt breaker buckler.
Personality: Anima is a cheerful, happy man. He strives to find the most out of any situation. When it comes down to combat, he prefers speed over raw strength. Why land one blow, when you can land three? (We'll see how long that mentality lasts.)
Starting Gift: A single Spark of Life that Anima managed to snag before being launched onto cradle's surface.
Backstory: Anima was born into the order, and most of his memories involve training and serving the higher-ups. His parents were soldiers, who died in service of the spiral order when he was 14. Instead of grieving over his loss, he strived to carry on their legacy by becoming a soldier himself - he had the training, and nearly 14 years of it. After begging for nearly a year, his service was allowed. His way of fighting was noted as odd; instead of using his shield often, he'd use his pistol to parry by shooting at his target's arms, then go in with his sword. Despite it being odd, it worked. As soon as he turned 18, he managed to snag a spot on the Skylark - and the rest is history.

Still looking for characters for the RP, and I would appreciate well thought out apps. Thanks!

While Dark Souls is fun to play solo, having groups is also very nice.
And by very nice, I mean very knife in my back ow
I mean, uhm.
So, I guess we should check other main forums like the gremlin chatter for more players?
Actually, I think the Gremlin Chatter may be the only other place from which we can get applicants.
And then, depending on their hopeful lack of ignorance, we might have to add in the basic rules of roleplay.
Although it might be fine to break the fourth wall (everyone would think you're beginning to go hollow), Being OP is a quick way to get kicked out.

I'd like to inform I will want to post an app here, but later. By later, I dont mean next month, I just want to put together a good character before jumping in.
Maybe I can put together a good sketch of his looks as well, I'm not sure...

I got a few questions. Can my character carry around certain tools that are not directly weapons? Namely, one of those crate-like computers that tech-y knights use in-game. Or a mobile turret puppet.
Going further, I'm thinking of having my char make usage of hijacked/custom-built Constructs. They would be single-life assets and would be virtualy lost if he died away from his bonfire, but he could repair and modify them, both in hardware and software, as the opportunities arised. I assume they would count as NPC's.
Also, is the Mecha Knight Kit trinket single use?

I assume your going to use the different classes as starting points here.
On a side note what about creatures like The Pursuer, Looking Glass Knight, Lost Sinner, Old Dragonslayer, Velstadt, The Royal Aegis,
Ancient Dragon(Or perhaps something like it), Throne Watcher and Throne Defender, Elana, Squalid Queen, Sinh the Slumbering Dragon, Afflicted Graverobber, Ancient Soldier Varg, and Cerah the Old Explorer(AKA the Gank squad.).
I chose certen ones for a reason and thier connection to the lore. As far as it goes what creatures do we have to pick from/fighting in this crazy world your about to unfold onto us.
Also what convents are going to be there. (Please let the Dragon covenants be a thing here xD)

I'm interested, but I've never played a Dark Souls game before. Would I still be able to join despite that?
@Liminori When exactly was the last time you went into GC?

@Subtle-Sandstorm: Tools and the like are fine. Not sure about the mobile turret, perhaps put a limited amount of time use you can use it before it needs to recharge? I don't want it to feel like an artificial companion/friend you've made. Dark Souls emphasized a lonely, sad air, and I want this RP to have the same. The Mecha Knight Kit it single use, but only ceases to function if it is destroyed.
@Darkwatck: This is just for Dark Souls, not Dark Souls II. Covenants are listed above, and sorry, I couldn't find a way I liked to insert Path of the Dragon anywhere (because Darkwraiths rule). AND DO NOT SPEAK OF GANK SQUAD, MANY DEATHS WERE ACCREDITED TO THEM.
@Crazee-Pi-Forum: Of course! All important mechanics and lore are listed above, and lack of Dark Souls knowledge won't affect you in any way. Just try to maintain a dark tone, is all I ask.

@Wastelanderr: It wouldn't be too hard considering the understanding of the Tech. of Knights as well as the BioTechs. As far as that goes from DS I I wasn't too much of a fan of it, I liked DS II and SotFS better :/ Anyway if you need help with the Path of the Dragon's Covenant's I could offer assistance but then again that's if you want it.

In DkS, I recall Path of the Dragon being dedicated to gaining dragon scales to upgrade weapons you got from cutting off dragon tails/other dragon related weapons, while gaining access to a sort of dragon-metamorphosis (Dragon Stones). We could try for a duelist guild that fights for upgrade materials required for powerful weapons, but it doesn't really maintain the "Dragon" part of "Path of the Dragon", nor would it really move the story along, as most of PotD battles are really just duels initiated by others (the Dragon has to lay down a sign and have someone choose to fight them. Not many would opt for that choice). You're not being forcefully invaded or hunted, so I'm still unsure of what to do concerning the PotD.
If you have an idea, I'd have no problem with hearing it.

Ooh, my specialty!
Members of PotD are summoned by hosts who have dragon scales. Why?
1: They see the summon sign and want a challenge/more souls that greedy jerk
2: They're a noob and assume all white looking things on the ground are friendly summons.
With what you're going for, this would only slow down the game.
My suggestion; The Gold Hoarders.
They steal masses of gold, raze and burn down villages, (and steal princesses? what are those at this point, firekeepers? gwyndo- errwaitisaidnothing)
An unholy abomination between Dragons and Thieves, this Covenant focuses on self gain.
Their power comes from the devotion to the dragon for whom they are splitting the gold with, which gives them the ability to morph their body into pseudo human shaped dragons (Dragon Scale Mail + Helm + Fire-breath/Roar) (Roar and Fire-breath are interchangeable, but one at a time.)
Unfortunately, Dragon Scale Mail is 5* and thus kinda OP, so maybe a lower ranking equivalent of it that is fair to just about everyone.

If you've read Berserk, perhaps a wayyyyy toned-down version of Grunbeld can work.
In all seriousness, I was thinking of using Sinister Skelly Suits (recolored with a fire aesthetic), Salamander Suits, Kat Claw Mail, or Ash Tail Coats (once again, recolored as more red-orange), with a Salamander Mask for the "dragon" forms for each PotD member. Each transformed state would have the option (because malformed dragons like Seath can be a thing too) of having an accessory from the "wings" category, horns, and tail. Fire-breathing and Force Roar seem good the way you've presented them. Basically, it offers increased protection, limited flight, and dragon abilities.
That said, that makes it quite powerful, so perhaps it should only be sustainable for a short time, or only obtainable when everyone is considerably more advanced, and can take it on more easily (Ash Lake in DkS is something encountered much later on, so the maybe even the Covenant shouldn't be discovered until later on in the game).
Oh no, I have to add optional areas and more bosses! ASH LAKE IS OPTIONAL!!!!
What you said about a dragon they split wealth with, I'll have to make a new monster for. It'll have to go in my Ash Lake equivalent...

Well I hate to say it but this is a moment where you might want to take a chapter from DSII book. From what I can understand people who become a Dragon, either DSI or DSII (Maybe DSIII) its about finding a second option from the Curse, think about it. When you Transform your bound in that body/Armor and can't take it off till death (Sounds like a real covenant in the since that your in it till you die) As far as it stands those in the PotD or Dragon Remnants (DSII) are all about this. A quote from the items.
"If our human flesh is our greatest weakness,
then those who seek a form that imitates the
ancient dragons are true vanguards."
That is from the Dragon Eye item. From what I can tell the term Vanguards isn't being used as a term to guide the way/guard something, instead its being use much as they are the enhariters of the power once lost a long time ago by 'Becoming' what was once long ago. (Some early release from DSIII also kinda supports this as the Dragons that are lying around are currently be warshipped by Hollows There are some who are taking the ashen scales and rubbing them on there bodies.)
Since (and items in SK support this as well) there are items in the game that directly relate to this creature I could suppose that they did or do exsist some where on cradle, hiding, watching. Or perhaps just like DS story lines they where whipped long ago and only those who seek power can obtain this form/armor.
Added to it there are also Dragon-Bros (Blame DSI/DSII for that term not me) who are friendly to players. The Dragon Remnants are more Honor bound and Duel to prove they are worthy of such a gift to become a Dragon or ETC to escape the Curse. Now that being said its possible to bring this to SK (if you want to talk about the armor at least) for them to maintain this Honor of Dueling/Helping fellow Dragon Remnants/PotD.
It would be up to you OFC but should you take this into consideration I will elaborate on my idea more.
Another one for you, this time from the Dragon Scale it's self (DSI/DSII)
"Touching an Ancient Dragon Scale
gives one a glimpse into the abyss.
Believers in the dragon will rise above
this petty corporeal existence."
Again this isn't to hard to bring into SK with all the Bio-Techs. and Specialist running about.

I've added in the PotD equivalent with ideas I took from both your posts, I hope you guys like how it works. Just waiting for apps now I guess

Hmm, see now you have tempted me. And since Temptation is too good I will work on an application later after a little reading. Still good job on the Covenant part.

Question; If you are a phantom (Summoned Spirit/Soul) i.e. Helper/Invader/Dueler, do you lose your humanity?
If I remember correctly, only hosts (Or, in this case, RealWorlders) could lose humanity and souls.

If you attack/assist someone as a summoned phantom using a covenant item, only then will you maintain crowns and Hollowing progress. However, if you attack as a non-phantom entity (because all players reside in the same world/plane of existence), you lose crowns and progress towards hollowing when you die.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that I added the new bosses and areas to the documents, if you haven't already, go check them out.

Name: Raleigh
Gender/Age: Male, 19
Appearance: Raleigh looks like a normal person... Yep. He's got generic amount of brown hair and a slight mustache growing. He's 5'7" and has an average build. He also bears a tattoo of a compass on his right hand (because he can). His hazel eyes either seem to be gleaming with fear or courage.
Starting Equipment: Cobalt Armor, Cobalt Helm, a Swift Flourish, and a Volt Breaker Shield.
Personality: He's a normal kind of friendly: Good is Good and Bad is Bad. He prefers to work in a group; but even though he has leadership skills, he just doesn't like being a leader unless he needs to. During some sort accident and a part of his heroism was replaced with cowardice. Raleigh also is good with coming up with ideas to an extent, but he can't do something special like thinking outside of the box.
Starting Gift:
- Munitions Packet; Didn't have any pleasant memories to bring, and even if a spark saved his life, he'd just die again.
Backstory: As a kid, he wanted to become a heroic figure that fights and other stuff. So he trained with plastic swords. Upon the creation of the Spiral Order when he was 13 (or whatever is correct), he immediately wished to be part of their ranks. After a request, he was given rigorous training with swords and leadership skills. When he was 14, his pet died in an accident, and then... It affected him with slight cowardice. So unless he's the only one that can do it, he doesn't attempt to be the leader of any party. Also, the only swords that he can properly use are foils, katanas, and knives.
After defeating a higher rank Knight in a duel, his talents were seen and he was properly accepted into the order. Mainly, his skills involve either parrying attacks with his sword, or striking enemies that are preparing to attack.
...tell me if I messed anything up.

Try elaborating on personality a bit..."He's full of some ideas" kinda contradicts itself. "He has tons of ideas, he's practically full of 'em, but only some." doesn't really work. Also, what kind of ideas? What do you mean by "reasonable"? Calm? Apathetic? Quietly ignoring those who oppose him? I know you did write "Don't expect anything special" but that's barely meeting the minimum of what people will need to know when interacting with your character.

Okay. Give me 10 hours I'm busy making up accents.
Edit: forgot to tell you that I can't come up with good characters either.
Does it require Defender Elite in game to join?
I am tired of being declined because "you must be Defender Elite".
