This is a theory that I've had turning in my head for months now. I asked myself-
How did the Knights even become known as Knights if "Knight" is a human term?
Why are they "Spiral" Knights?
Is the Knight universe far in the future, the time we're in now, or in the past (Like Star Wars)?
Are the Knights a technologically-advanced race, or, if this takes place in the same universe as Sol (our solar system) and is in the far future, are we more or as equally advanced?
I've seen fanwriters touch the questions briefly, but they're still pretty much unanswered. In no way am I saying that this is an official story element. There's probably completely other legitimate (and official) answers to my questions, maybe these questions are just me finding plot holes in the SK story/world, but I'm theorizing nevertheless.
Anyway, as for the "origin", I'm mostly meaning how they molded into the race they are in the present gametime, not how they were created by Vog or a Big Bang or if they're robots or a biological race, or if they even belong to Isora or something like that. This is a cultural theory, not an evolutionary theory.
It's really not even much of a theory, it's a bit more of an idea for a short story that COULD be theorized if kinks and such were smoothed out.
But without further ado, this is my short story about the origin of Spiral Knights culture.

INTRODUCTION

“No! Stop! HAHAHAHAEEP!”
“Are you going to stay in bed?”
“HAHAHAHAHAYES!HEEHEEHEEHEEH-”
The mother removed her wiggling fingers from her young Knights’ ticklish spots, smiling from ear to ear at her two silly children’s antics. “Now how about a bedtime story?”
The youngest female Knight’s eyes widened with joy and she started bouncing up and down in the bottom of the hovering bed, making it move up and down with the changes in weight. “Oooh! Yes yes yes yes yes!”
“Stop making the bed shake, Pira!” Her brother lying next to her, Taeren, protested. The oldest sibling, 14 year old Azael, refrained him from pounding his fists on his youngest sister. “Shut up and listen to Mom! I’m only here for one more day so behave!”
Their mother gave them all a harsh glance before pulling up a chair to sit on. “If you fight, you won’t be able to hear the story because you keep interrupting me.”
Pira calmed down and stared at her mother in total dismay, her huge, glowing, toddler eyes going even wider. “No no! Okay, okay, we’ll stop!”
“Good.” the mother replies cooly, getting comfortable in her chair. She leans over and starts in a dramatic voice. “Once upon a time, there was a little avi-”
“I’m tired of the bird story…” Taeren crosses his arms and looks expectantly at his mother.
She stops mid sentence and ponders for a moment. “Ah, you’re right. I’m getting tired of that one too.” She leans back and searches her mind to think of something. “Well...what do you guys want to hear?”
“The one about the Knights falling in love!” Pira squeals in glee.
Taeren holds his nose in annoyance. “Blaaaaaugh. I don’t like mushy stories!”
Azael rolls her eyes in amusement. “How about the one about the annoying kids?”
Both of her younger siblings stared at her in disgust. “That one didn’t make any sense!” Taeren rebukes, throwing his hands in the air.
Azael turned to stare at them and says “That’s because you’re not old enough to understand the jokes.”
“Yes we are!” Pira points a meaty finger at her sister. “I’m five whole years old! I understand everything!”
“Okay, do you understand how my armor works?” Azael leans against the bed with her arms crossed, obviously mentioning to her Proto Armor.
“Uhhh…”
“That’s enough. Either I pick one, you all agree on one, or you don’t get any bedtime story.” The mom says firmly, ending the pointless argument.
“But I can’t think of any!” Taeren pouted angrily and stared out the window.
“Hon, how about I handle these little soldiers for you?”
Everyone in the room jumped to hear someone else come in all of a sudden, and their eyes all moved towards the bedroom door. The father and husband was standing in the doorway, still dressed in his moderately high ranking Azure Guardian Armor. It appeared that he'd finally come home from a long and tedious stretch of work at HQ.
“DADDY!!!” The two young Knights tumbled out of bed to hug their father, and as they reached him he pretended to nearly fall over as they tackled his legs and refused to unlatch.
“You guys are hyper tonight, aren’t you?” he said playfully, and walked stiffly and slowly back to the beds with the little kids stuck to his legs. As he passed the mother he kissed her on the cheek, and Taeren made a sound that seemed a lot like gagging. Father hugged Azael and their armor clinked as it touched each other’s.
“Now, in bed with you two!” He pried the two giggling children off of his legs with ease and tossed them into their bed, and their giggles were uncontrollable. Mother was smiling again, and even Azael was starting to smile. Their dad’s playfulness was absolutely contagious.
“Keira, go make yourself something. You’ve been stuck with these two for two days, go relax.” He ordered his wife, and she laughed, though a little exhaustion leaked into her voice. She got up and left the room, closing the door behind her, obviously somewhat glad to have some time to herself.
“Do you tell good stories, Daddy?” Pira asked meekly.
Father laughed for a moment before answering. “You bet, Little P. I even know a real story that you guys would all love. Even you.” He shot a glance at Azael before looking back at his two younger children.
“Real stories are usually boring...unless they’re about fighting and slashing our enemies!” Taeren swung an imaginary sword and almost hit Pira with his fist, but instead smashed his hand against the bed. He winced from the singing pain and grabbed his hand. “Ow.” he said quietly. He wasn’t one to cry from a small injury.
“Well, it definitely has fighting in it, Taeren. But this in fact the story about how you even have this bed to sleep on.” Father lowered his voice dramatically, and his children became intensely quiet. They all knew he was about to start the story.
“A long, long, long time ago, in this very town, there was a young Knight girl…”
