I feel this would fit better in General Discussion rather than Suggestion, as this is meant for just discussion. But what do you guys think about Spiral Knights being Over the Shoulder? What sort of pros and cons could you see coming from this? Do you think it would make the game feel more engaging, or less?
Over the Shoulder version
This would require a massive visual overhaul and likely a new game engine. I've loved the idea of a third person Spiral Knights game as a prequel in the Morai Wars.
The current game though is built around the current camera, so I wouldn't want to touch it too much right now. Wolvers and spookats in particular would be troublesome without the top down camera.
If the mouse was used to look around like in a lot of PC games it shouldn't be to much of an issue to deal with wolvers and spookats. Controls most likely would still be the typical WASD to move, and the RMB for attack assuming you use this setup, if using a melee weapon RMB can be for attacking, for guns it would most likely be RMB for aiming and LMB for shooting.
I know how an FPS or OTS gameplay style would work, but it's more the fact of how the AI works. Frequently teleporting behind you, the size of enemies around you, having less of an estimate on weapon range, etc. Over the shoulder would limit the visuals on several weapons as well, as nitronome and pulsar would effectively blind the player on use instead of being something that's just on the screen. On top of this, Spiral Knights is not a true 3D game, meaning that aiming up or down with any sort of weapon would not have any effect.
The game at its core would need a lot of functional overhauls for this. You are practically making an entirely new game by simply shifting the camera, and while that isn't a bad thing, it's something that requires entirely new game design and behaviors to be balanced. If you think mini monsters in compounds are bad right now, imagine having to keep track of the ones that spawned behind you every 2 seconds to make sure they aren't about to poke your ankles, or trying to see an enemy that's shooting projectiles at you from behind a massive grimalkin in a candlestick keep.
Man could you imagine trying to take down the Roarmulus Twins while only able to see 1/3 of the arena at a time?
In addition to the gameplay stuff, a lot of animations are meant to be viewed from a top down angle. For example, it's why your knight holds their sword almost parallel to the ground. From a top-down perspective, it looks fine because it lets the player see what weapon they're using. However at a lower camera angle it looks really awkward, like your knight is about to flap their arms and try to fly.
If you go to FSC on D28, before the boss fight, the place where you spawn, go to the far south. I wanna try to play the game in that view. There's also an angle I think would be cool to play from. When you reach the core, go to the far north. I'd like to play this game from many different angles. To each their own though, so I think they should add a setting to change the camera view.
