Steam not-so-recently got a beta that includes a lot of new features. It feels a bit like discord, however it feels like it could be a good opportunity to have various developers or official channels have real-time interactions with the community without having to actively be in the game to do so.

I figure that it's fairly unlikely that we'll have developers popping in and exclaiming that they are part of the team over on the unofficial discord, but it may be possible to use the official "Spiral HQ" steam account to talk to the community, ask questions, etc. in a controlled environment.

This also gives the possibility of community moderators, however that is a bit of a finer line to walk and I'm not certain if there's plans to go there, but it's an idea to at least put out! :)
