I'm not asking if it's dead or anything. Just wondering how grey havens continues to keep the game breathing. I'm not sure of how many people would spend real money on the game, I sure have before but not a lot, is it really enough to keep pumping the game?
Will this game stay alive?
Spending money on video games has always been and will always be like throwing it down the drain; it just so happens that the fun of watching the drainage is (usually) worth the money spent on it, so long as you remember that "live service"-based drains like these will eventually shut down at one point or another and you'll just have to move on.
More seriously now, GH is supposedly dedicating itself to keep their games alive for as long as it's humanely possible on their behalf; whether spending money on the game actually matters to such goals is a whole other story.
People have been asking this question since 2011, which is the year that the game launched. If I'd listened to them, I would have quit long before I ran out of content --- and obviously long before the game actually died. So my advice is to enjoy the game while you can, and leave the worrying to Grey Havens.
But maybe you're just curious about the finances. Some players spend money because they genuinely perceive value (costumes, mixmasters, etc.), while other players spend money just to support the game. Apparently they spend enough to cover the server costs. The development costs are probably pretty low, because there's not much development, because the game is a hobby or labor of love (for which I'm thankful).
Disclaimer: This post is based on years of reading these forums --- not on any insider knowledge of how Grey Havens operates.
My worry is that this great love for the game runs out one day for GH. Hopefully it doesn't and/or people keep dropping their pockets so a lot of other people can continue to enjoy the game.
Has anyone from the Dev Team said anything new since that really old state of haven thread?
Would it be possible to help? Like if we could help with the design or something? I know funding doesn't help much...could we possibly start an advertising campaign? I mean, if you look at the growth of a recent unnamed YouTuber, who grew a lot simply because their fans advertised - could we not potentially do the same as a community? I really don't want this game to die... I haven't been on due to lack of time, but there are still so many things I'd like to do. This game was literally my childhood. It fueled so much of my inspiration too. I design creatures for fun in my sketchbook based on the style of this game. Everyone is saying this game is on life support, but it doesn't have to be that way, does it?
If only they had listened to the community. That's all I can say, since there would be so much to say about it.
There are a number of people that are heavily invested in the game in ways that go beyond gear, myself being one of them.
These people will not let the game die, even as it fades into obscurity and fails to work on modern hardware.
The game isn't "dying", people just reached the end-game and realized... there wasn't an infinite amount of game in there. That's perfectly fine, most if not all games have that, and it's difficult to satisfy those who are at that point.
While we cannot do anything directly as players, the best thing we can do is create, share, and spread Spiral Knights out into the world. A lot of people played the game back in the day, but most only played a little bit or quit for a variety of reasons after being turned off by them (energy system being a huge one).
Basically, we as players can help, but it's simply through playing the game, telling people about the game, being engaged with it, and in creating art/songs/other things that get folks out of the game interested in it. Share other people's art and creations to drive traffic.
If you can't create, get engaged with the community! Legobuild has been doing livestreams for Spiral Knights for a while now, but also streams other games. By doing so, he's able to capture multiple communities together and expose them to Spiral Knights, which has a fair chance to bring additional users in. Spiral Knights thrives on word of mouth, so we just need to be that mouth that's spreading the word. 😁
In my most humble opinion. Spending money on this game is like throwing it down the drain. But if you can why not? I was a casher myself for years because i loved tto see the game growing(at least that's what i hoped for when i threw money on it) but from these last years... It's not really worth it... Only do buy if the promo is actually good and worth it.
I think about 50 players more or less still fund the game because they can... And some buy multiple times. As long as they keep buying the servers will be up for our entertainment.
