Can't run the game as fast as I should.

Before I got Steam, my game used to run smoothly and just fine. Now it's a laggy, stuttering mess.
My computer has 4 G worth of RAM and I have almost nothing open when I play, yet it's still slow.
I tried fixing the registry but it's still slow.
Cleaned out cookies - still slow.
Why is my game being so slow even though it shouldn't be so?

No Steam
I turn off Steam when I'm playing and make sure that other programs like Java aren't running as well. I've tried messing with the graphics settings but even that doesn't work.

Steam overlay
Have you tried disabling the steam overlay option? Try unchecking the box that says Enable steam community in-game. That seems to solve a lot of my steam related game issues.

I have the exact same issue
With the same specs :P I also turn off any programs ... except for Steam which I can't turn off x.x
Where is that button? Or anyone have any other ideas?

I know it's kinda simple but..
Is it possible you have two Spiral Knights windows open? Sometimes I accidentally open up two windows and the second wont show on my task bar. It makes the game run horridly slow

quad core and 4 gigs, and I
quad core and 4 gigs, and I still get a lot of jitter and lag. Part of it is the connection, but another part of it is the fat pig of a java instance it is. 500-650Meg process.
I have got my graphics settings aaaalll the way down, and am playing at 1028. :\

After opening the game press
After opening the game press alt+esc, then windows button + d, then click on minimized game window on your taskbar. Now it should run much faster. It lags when any other window is "behind" the game window.

What are you talking about Java HAS to run if your playing Spiral Knights :I
Because you have steam running while java is up. You could try turning the graphics from High to Low or close any other programs running at the same time.
