We will soon be opening up a testing server to select players. The testing server will be a place where players can play upcoming content and provide feedback to developers. We will also be creating a new board for discussing content in testing.
Please keep an eye out on the forums for more details shortly. The first wave of testers will be able to experience Lockdown before anyone else. They will even be able to go toe-to-toe with the dev team. This will be happening very soon, so watch the forums!

two questions: how will you inform the selected players? and will you select players who are active on the forums or is the whole player base involved?
edit: another question will selected player be forced to abide a non-disclosure agreement? as much as i would love to hear about experiences with lockout before it's release i wouldnt want people to get into trouble over it

This should also means no more reboots an hour after patches because they don't work, as the devs will have help not letting any slimy bugs squirm through to the release. :D
In any case, I'll be eagerly awaiting the info on how the player selection will work.

The way they did it for YPP,
The way they did it for YPP, the testing server was open to anyone who've recently bought dubloons or subscribed. Dubloon buyers got access for a month as soon as they bought dubs. And I mean buy it with cash. There was only one exception, when they needed a large number of people to test things to see if it would work and that was because the test server usually had like 5 people online at a time. Not optimal for testing something that requires a lot of people...heh.

In one of OOO's other games,
In one of OOO's other games, puzzle pirates, there is another test server. Access to this test server is limited to only those people who have bought at least $6 of doubloons (equivalent to CE) in the last 30 days. Doubloons bought via puzzle pirates exchange do *NOT* count, you must pay OOO with real money
Other than that restriction, anyone can join the puzzle pirates test server.
I have no clue if OOO will do the same thing for Spiral Knights, but it wouldn't surprise me. There are legal labor issues with OOO selecting testers and giving testers certain duties and/or privileges. If they exert too much control over the testers and what they do, the testers can be legally considered to be employees and subject to minimum wage requirements, subject to taxes, etc. By limiting testers to only those that have paid OOO, they can keep the test server from being flooded with players, without passing legal thresholds of being employees. OOO might easily choose some other criteria, but I suspect that they will not be individually reviewing who can become a tester and who can't.

A test server usually allows
A test server usually allows you to create a new character, has experience ( in this case heat ) bonus, sufficient amount of gold ( in this case, ce, which should only stay in that server ) to craft anything and test anything.
At least from what I'd experience in the previous action arcade-style combat mmo.

I'm normally a quiet person when I'm in a group of friends because I'm cautious about what I say. People, both online and real life friends, normally come to me with their problems since I'm able to provide a detailed explanation of what I suggest they do. Essentially, I'm able to provide detailed information/criticism when necessary and in a serious manner.
I would love to suggest myself but at the risk of sounding self important, I'd like to suggest Katmint and Magnus more specifically. Both are users who I get along with greatly, and I know they (Along with myself) can provide good input as well if given the opportunity.
Did I mention that I type well and am one of the few users running on a Linux machine? :P

I would be great for this as I have level design experience in both source and unreal. I also won mapping contests in the past for half life 2 deathmatch and have knowledge of good level design and flow. I also am 30 years old and have coordinated with people who have shipped and worked on 2 different AAA titles! I also am very knowledgeable in everything spiral knights.
