I think he meant more of a one on one deal.
I think that that would be popular, but this is billed as a co-op game, and that doesn't really fit the bill. I also think it would be a ghosttown once everyone figured out that once you fight one dude in a vog hat carrying sword x you have fought them all. I also think the leaderboard would be better represented in ping time as opposed to KDR. The team aspect adds replayability

the issue is with equipment i can kill just about anyone with two hits of just about any of my weapons 1 v 1 duels would suck since they wouldnt be at a satisfying length

Try throwing on your proto gear & playing T1 Lockdown... Instead of the T3 1 or 2 hit kills, it becomes a very protracted slap fest until somebody falls down from exhaustion.
